A provocative new history of the elitist roots of contemporary transgender culture and politics.

It is often thought that transgender identity is a stable category that encompasses a culturally and politically unified group. In Transgender Liberalism, acclaimed scholar Jules Gill-Peterson upends such simplistic notions by showing that the transgender identity that emerged in the United States across the twentieth century, roughly from the New Deal era onward, was largely shaped by a middle-class elite who denigrated working-class practices of changing sex, especially those of transsexual women.

Drawing on the extensive archives of prominent figures and advocacy organizations, Gill-Peterson details how changing sex was domesticated over the course of the twentieth century by bourgeois orthodoxies from the New Deal to Great Society liberalism. In particular, the architects of transgender identity ensured its compatibility with liberal and neoliberal values that became prevalent in these periods, such as personal choice and responsibility, individual rather than collective flourishing, and individualist rather than structural approaches to opportunity. The guiding principle of this worldview was that the economic and social risks of transitioning should be privatized.

A history at once theoretically rich and vividly told, Transgender Liberalism leaves little doubt that transgender identity-alongside other identitarian frameworks-has displaced class consciousness and provided a bulwark against truly transformative mass politics.

“Actually we’ve already abandoned trans kids, we just wanna tone it down.”
"We're spending our energy investing in the candidates that are all the way with us. So in Ohio, we're really spending a lot of energy and effort with Sherrod Brown's [Senate] campaign. We're not supporting Amy Acton or Marcy Kaptur at this time," Robinson added. "If these folks are elected, we'll figure out how to operate on the other side.”

Robinson said that Brown, who is running against Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio), has done a "great job® responding to Republicans' anti-trans attacks.A 30-second ad from Brown's campaign has voters, not Brown, explicitly saying that anti-trans messaging in the state is a distraction from economic issues because Ohio already has laws in place banning gender-affirming care for minors and prohibiting trans athletes from joining female sports teams.

"I'm not wasting my time on Marcy Kaptur, Robinson said. "We're spending our energy and resources on the champions that we think can be the difference makers."

💯 If trans women being unambiguously happy makes people tantrumously passive-aggressive, that means they still have yet to understand transmisogyny as a crippling evil which they’ve had to suffer for their entire lives. Franny is the first example I’ve ever seen this depicted in.

“The most powerful man in the world is the guiltiest rapist alive. Trans women are not your existential threat. And neither are their dicks.”
Here's the thing. Men know that penetrative sex is violative. Some have gone out of their way to not be a part of the problem but the response of the garden variety cishet man to the concept of pegging or sleeping with a trans woman is one of extreme emasculation. It's why the focus of the culture war is on trans women. Trans men can look like a fucking tank with a beard but there will be the assumption that trans men → no penis → safe. Not a woman, per sé, but not a threat, either. Easy to disregard. Invisible, if you like.

I'm not looking to change cis men's minds here and now. Do I want a future where dicks and vaginas can live side by side, holding hands, dancing through the fields? Sure! I'd love that! I don't think I'll fucking get it, though. I don't really have the ear of the planet, do I? No, the people I'd hope to reach are the lesbians who are aware of the association, who can not conceive of sex with a penis as an act of pleasure, let alone love, but only one of violation. My request to you is not to sleep with me. Or with a trans woman, for that matter. I think it'd be best for everyone involved, in fact, if you didn't. Feels like that would be a bad fucking time. No, what I want from you is to understand that we are on the same fucking side. Because, believe it or not, the end point of feminism is not that everyone has a vagina, but it is equality, without a need for violence. It is an end to patriarchy, with all that entails.

For that to happen, we will need to lock arms. Because things are going to be ROUGH, going forward. The bathroom brigade has been very successful in many countries around the world, and every bit of legislation that hurts trans women will be used to hurt cis women. Prommy. She who plays with the devil's toys will be brought by degrees to wield his sword. What do I want from my fellow crabs?

Three things:

1. Do a bit of introspection and try to uncouple sexual violence from penis. If that's not an option, consider the possibility of there being a difference between men's dicks and trans women's dicks. I promise, trans women are no more capable or liable to commit sexual violence than any other woman.

2. If your worry or frustration is tied to penetration, consider the fact that not all sex needs to be penetrative, even if there's a penis in the room. There's a lot of fun to be had without Penis Goes In Vagina math.3. Fucking lie. If you consider yourself "woke" or a leftist or progressive, I don't need you to want to sleep with trans women but when someone asks you and your gut response is "ew penis", look that person straight in the eyes and tell them that you would.

Point 3. probably seems like it's mostly for the benefit of trans women. It is to the benefit of all women. Because trans women are not the threat. Sexual violence is. And the main perpetrators of sexual violence is men. By saying, publicly, that you're willing to sleep with trans women but not men, you are explicitly saying "I'm not scared of your dick, I'm scared of you, motherfucker." Even if the dick is the thing you're scared of.

When antifeminists are called “women’s groups” and the defense of women’s rights is replaced with frenzied, libidinal hatred of trans people, who will work to liberate women from patriarchal violence, abuse, and control? Nobody, of course, and that’s the point of the “gender critical” movement.

thoughts on bullying
It feels dumb to claim as an adult that you’re in bad mental health due to bullying, but that’s really the case for me even though I’ve never thought it was a big deal. So much transphobia just boils down to “What if we gave bully mentality a gundam?” and I’ve come to accept that so much transphobia I’ve experienced & witnessed throughout life is essentially that. As I start to pass more, I’ve noticed how likely it is for others make fun of me for looking like an actual doll or a stereotypical younger-than-me woman. In a time of intellectual decline where many people just default to their childhood behaviors, it’s also an easier way to explain harassment against me in virtually any given setting. This also, I think, contributes to a healthier social relationship with the average person. I don’t like treating grown adults like children, but most people tend to do that anyway and it doesn’t get much easier to be paternalistic towards any given demographic than trans women. I love getting hit dogs to holler and I’ve done this enough times to know that not everyone who reacts this way will end up hating me after all. They’re just processing being told that they can’t treat me like a masochist. It’s a difficult fight for sure but it’s one I’ve always been willing to take on.

Let’s go! ✊🏳️‍⚧️
During the U.S. civil rights movement, which drew significantly from the decolonial struggles in India and elsewhere in the world, radical boycotts rooted in grassroots anger and community organizations helped directly break the hold of segregation by directly attacking the capitalist pillars underlying white supremacy.

Boycotts against apartheid South Africa, through years of persistence, grew from local organizing and advocacy to a movement that toppled an entire regime and ended apartheid. Even the U.S. and other imperialist governments once supportive of the white supremacist government sanctioned it in its final years-not because their heartstrings were pulled, but because they were compelled to act.Building on these victories, the Palestinian BDS (boycott, divestments, sanctions) movement has brought tactics of economic warfare into the era of the internet and trillion-dollar tech companies in their fight against the genocidal Israeli regime. Despite laws passed against BDS in some states, their long struggle has had proven impacts on the bottom lines of massive corporate giants like McDonald's and helped force Microsoft to stop serving cloud services to an IDF military unit that was involved with war crimes, among other victories. One of their most important tactics is targeting a smaller number of companies with a larger amount of force, in order to simplify participation and maximize impact.Drawing from these struggles, it's important to recognize that a targeted set of companies maximizes the impact of boycotts, and a diverse set of tactics makes it harder for capitalists to defend their ground. Accordingly, activists should mount campaigns against institutional shareholders of The New York Times to divest their shares. A significant portion of the company is owned by pension funds in California, New York, and other state-run investment funds vulnerable to public pressure. Considering that the Times' executive leadership is compensated largely based on the value of the stock, divestment is a direct attack against the profiteering of our suffering.More realistically, we hope to hurt their ability to hurt us, to inflict as serious a cost as possible for what they have inflicted on trans people around the world, to dismantle the profit motive that funds and incentivizes their relentless attacks against us. We hope our | demonstration of collective power will deter other publications from genocidal campaigns, and inspire other trans activists in the community to launch further organized boycotts, such as against HBO for Harry Potter, which will steer yet more funds to J.K. Rowling to bankroll trans genocide. We invite other groups, organizations and individuals to support this boycott and launch their own efforts using any tactics and methods they see fit.

So…yeah, like I said, the WNBPA really meant it in their earlier statement about “having difficult conversations.” I’m just so disappointed that it’s taken this fucking long since the Bud Light fiasco to get the corporate world to do anything substantial to speak out against the attacks and stigma.
The meeting on Wednesday did not yield any proposed changes to the WNBA’s eligibility rules. In a statement to ESPN, the league said the meeting had covered a range of topics, “including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes.”

“We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league,” the statement read. “There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”“A very small number of people — probably not actually even fans of the league — are trying to use this opportunity and this issue to divide fans and divide players,” she said.

Hultquist, who works for an international LGBTQ+ nonprofit in the Seattle area, said she’s been encouraged by statements from WNBA players like Gabby Williams of the Golden State Valkyries, who has said she would welcome a transgender player and has spoken out against policies restricting trans rights.

“When we don’t say anything, I think it leaves trans people hanging out to dry with no support,” Hultquist said. “Especially as cis people, I think we need to show that we have their back and that we don’t need to take the bait, so to speak, into bad-faith arguments.”In 2020, the league and players association launched the WNBA Social Justice Council, a first-of-its-kind effort to address systemic racism, healthcare inequity, gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights.

It was in that same spirit that Chris Paulsen, a 27-year Fever season ticket holder and CEO of IYG, a local LGBTQ+ nonprofit, asked the team’s leadership for a meeting.

The two groups had formed a close partnership over the last decade, she said, and Fever players for years had visited IYG’s headquarters in Indianapolis to meet with queer and trans youth. At the Fever’s annual Pride night in June, the team honored Paulsen, who will retire at the end of the year, at center court.Paulsen said she met with executive leadership at the Fever and its parent company, Pacers Sports & Entertainment, about Cunningham’s remarks and the ensuing fallout. She asked if they would be open to releasing a joint statement, but they declined, telling Paulsen the Fever is not a political organization.

“I’m just really disappointed in them for not supporting trans people. I thought our partnership was stronger than that,” Paulsen said of the meeting. “But we’re still here. We’ve offered to educate any of their staff about trans girls in sports and things like that. And right now, they’ve chosen not to take that offer, but I’m hoping maybe that will change.”

This is how it’s done.
SiriusXM’s Katie Nolan perhaps had the most thorough deconstruction of Cunningham’s perspective on her Casuals podcast this week.

In a monologue addressing Cunningham directly, Nolan contrasted Cunningham’s support of the UFC with her purported desire to protect women in sports, while calling out Cunningham for failing to understand the broader context of her comments despite playing alongside many LGBTQ women in the WNBA and even cohosting a podcast with a straight man who recently called the trans athlete conversation a “borderline nonexistent issue” and said it was distracting from far more urgent problems facing the U.S.

“One side politically is incredibly invested in this issue, and that’s because one side politically doesn’t have a lot of other issues that they’ve got pretty big approval on,” Nolan said.“And now I am of the belief that the reason they have big approval on this is because people keep saying sentences like, ‘I don’t want little girls to have to go against biological men.’ Because on its face that sounds like something is common sense. That’s not what anybody’s asking for. Nobody is saying we should get rid of, for example, the WNBA and the NBA, and everybody should just compete together. Nobody’s saying that. And so the people that are packaging it as that are doing so on purpose. And when you are consuming it and going, ‘How could anyone disagree with this statement?’ You never consider that it’s because the statement itself does not reflect the actual issue that we’re discussing.”A widely cited NBC News poll last year showed that three-fourths of respondents were against trans women competing in women’s sports. Nolan, however, believes that the argument has been twisted by the right wing’s extreme language rather than focusing on the actual considerations at hand, such as how to sort children in youth sports or how to scientifically evaluate sex and gender at the highest levels of professional competition.

Previously, Nolan has argued that figures like Fox News contributor Riley Gaines are also manipulating the conversation around trans athletes while not adequately standing up for actual issues facing women in sports, such as the abuse in the U.S. Gymnastics program. On her podcast Friday, Nolan grouped Cunningham into a similar bloc, arguing she is failing to apply basic critical thinking around the issue and its media coverage.Nolan also pointed out that many sports governing bodies throughout the decade have essentially banned trans athletes from competing. In the U.S., the Trump administration has aggressively pursued restrictive policies, with both the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the NCAA following suit by adopting rules requiring athletes to compete against others of the sex they were assigned at birth.

“You’ve already ‘won,’ quote-unquote, in that way. And yet you and others seem unwilling to let this go,” Nolan said, again addressing Cunningham. “Or to even learn a little bit more about it, consider what the other side is trying to say. You just keep saying, ‘Well, I’m against men fighting against women, and I think it’s crazy that you’re not.’ What if you considered that that’s not what other people are arguing? What if you considered you’re misunderstanding the issue, and then consider that that’s because that was beneficial to whoever’s f*cking playing you?”

Seeing this comic inspired me to post that because it’s hilarious. I literally LOL’d. I’ve always appreciated the bimbo more than any other transfem stereotype because they’ve seen enough horrors to be effective, assertive authority and they never stop being cute. And women of any race can be one.
In a classroom setting, a girl with mostly bleached hair, with purple makeup and dress, black choker and arm tattoos holds out her right hand and says, “Sorry, but…I don’t speak SUBREDDIT INCEL, GIRL. But, thanks.”

In the background of this panel is fires from hell with a devil’s thorn headband over her head, with the word “SCARY” above it.

Top right panel is a dark-skinned girl laughing. Below that is a nerdy girl in glasses, a brown bob and gray shirt, clenching her face in anger and thinking “FUCKING BIMBOS!”

Middle left panel is the nerdy girl’s lap, showing her getting a boner from the bimbo girl, on whom she regretfully has a crush. The nerdy girl is thinking, “Oh shit, not now, why now?!”

To the right, the bimbo holds up a pink book while looking at the nerdy girl, who’s nervously shaking. The bimbo is thinking, “What’s that all about?”

Bottom panel is the school bell clock ringing with electric zaps and a long BRRRRRIIIIINNNNGGGG in red text next to it.
