Symphonies and operas (and performances of them) were traditionally fully paid for by aristocrats as a way for them to flex their wealth and cultural power—orchestras as we know them were never designed to fund themselves

If you're a Black woman in academia recycling boilerplate sentences (this is the main charge against Dr Gay) you get excessive scrutiny even on acknowledgment section and plagiarism case slapped on you. If you're an AI Bro in OpenAI doing the same thing you're a tech messiah ushering in a new era.

Are there any good non-academic introductions to oral history and oral culture? I searched and found the academic books, nothing for laypeople. I'm looking for a metareflection on passing on knowledge through spoken word (or song, ...). The paradox of looking for something written on oral history...

After several weeks now in my calisthenics journey to press to handstand, I am capable of lifting my legs up straight when sitting on the ground with my hands next to my knees. It's also not entirely impossible to do the same when sitting straddle. Progress!

When the clock strikes midnight on January 1, works of art & culture from 1928 will enter the public domain in the US, meaning they can be remixed & reused in new creative works. And 1928 was a big year, thanks to a famous mouse... Join our celebrations: blog.archive.org/2023/12/05/w...
The imaginary cover to a 1928 issue of "Weird Tales from the Public Domain" features a fat cat in a top hat, smoking a cigar, strangling a mouse. The tagline of "Freeing culture from corporate captivity" runs along the bottom of the image.

I started a journey on more or less my 38th birthday of the "press to handstand" calisthenics move. Lots of work to be done for me on shoulder strength, quad strength and pancake. Target is a successful press by age 40. Progression tips welcome!
