i think early 2000s art forms broke so many peoples brains tbh min included. We focus too much on art as expressions of skill rather than a method to communicate ideas. Creating good and fun experiences will always surpass flourishes of skill to a general audience

ultimately i think the problem they are touching on is *trope* which is notably separate from design. "little bastard" is absolutely overdone and a little tired at this point (weasleton was worth a lifetime. But you can absolutely have the design on the right and not use the trope at all

i think its also important to note that sometimes a characters design can sometimes to contradict some aspects abotu themselves. a super cute character design can also be used as a facade to hide their true personality ect. cute in itself is also EXTREMELY cultural.

I agree! but i also think that its important to Remember that character designs are purposeful. Often the cuter foxes are positioned in more protagonist roles ect so they get a lot softer designs to make them more endearing to the audience. while still keeping that angularity

while this is ture i also feel like this misses a lot of important contexts about cartoonists which is the point of the profession is to exaggerate. so going off model with their features or making them look silly is part of the job and totally normal even today with proper referencees

oh i know i was more aiming at "why" these designs on the right are done this way. the stubby feature and simplistic eyes featured in eastern depictions are certainly cute but they also dont anthropomorphize well. this isnt a "western or eastern" thing, its a character design thing is what i mean

There is certainly merit to kinda capturing the essence of an animal in a more realistic tone. i find that in art its really hard to depict a lot of expression with stubby/subdued features. One look at the weasel on the right and you get a whole personality. while on the left its harder to decode.
