GBIF Map Search — Summarize biodiversity records by map area
Draw a map area or drop a GeoJSON boundary to summarize GBIF occurrence records — species, datasets, publishers, years, and more. Runs entirely in your browser.

The hope is that it helps answer questions like: Who collected data here, and when? What species were they documenting? Which institutions hold species records or observations from our territory? Are culturally sensitive species being published? And more.

So we ended up creating this map search page, where the community org can easily upload their territory boundaries and return useful information about the different datasets, publishers, and species records collected in their territory.

The questions led to a desire to understand who has collected biodiversity data in their territory as a whole. I haven’t really worked much with GBIF before, but I found it a little hard to answer that question through their portal, and I couldn't find any other third party resources for searching.

🧵 This past week, I was supporting an Indigenous community organization in understanding the ramifications of using iNaturalist, and in particular when their data ends up being published to GBIF. It ultimately culminated in a small map search tool for exploring GBIF records within a territory.

For any other #FairfaxCounty parents annoyed trying to find classes in the inefficient FCPA catalog: I built a simple browsable static page that allows you to search and filter all classes everywhere at once. rudokemper.com/fairfax-FCPA... #Fairfax #NorthernVirginia

Fallout 4 on the Steamdeck for me :) but yeah, sometimes find the itch to want to try to do something productive. Vibe-coding a QGIS plugin sounds like a fun way to do it!

I wouldn't mind trying my hand at starting a QGIS plugin for this, and inviting others to collaborate. I'm inspired by seeing others like @opencholmes.bsky.social creating their own plugins recently. But probably could only do this at a hobby level of effort. (Typing with a newborn in my arm 😉)

Rudo @rudokemper.com · 08/04/2025
Ah cool! Yeah, I figured there are some good workflows involving use of tools outside of QGIS. I recall coming across a browser-based georeferencing tool, for example. But I was just so surprised that freehand drawing wasn't already baked into QGIS!
010
Rudo @rudokemper.com · 08/04/2025
GIS folks: is there a viable #QGIS plugin for freehand drawing features that will work in 3.x.x? It looks like "BeePen" is only good for annotations, and "Freehand Editing" was last updated 12 years ago. If not, would there be interest in one? #GISChat @qgis.fosstodon.org.ap.brid.gy

A project I've been working on for the last 6 months. I feel really strongly about making geospatial technology and data available and understood by as many people as possible. And that requires getting creative with the ways we share information. This is my small contribution to that effort.

Moreso a storytelling than a gameplay thing, but I'd say a slight narrative shift to bring it more in-line with later Ultima lore could be really nice, but without being unfaithful to the original (e.g. don't cut out space stuff because that was an integral part of the game).

As somebody who started to play beginning with Ultima 7 and 8, I just couldn't get into the lore of Ultima 2 and 3. They felt too distant from the gameworld I started in. I played and finished all of the others though, including I and 0.

As a kid, I loved poring over atlases, and so when I started to play Ultima (around the time of VII / VIII), I was fascinated by these beautiful cloth maps that came with the box. Amazingly, they matched the game world with a highly accurate level of detail, and I would use them while playing.

⚠️ Nerdy post ahead When I was young, one of my favorite PC game series was Ultima by @richardgarriott.bsky.social. I loved the world-building and philosophical aspects, and I actually learned a lot of English from playing them. And then there were the maps; both in-game, and these physical copies.
A collection of cloth and paper maps from the Ultima series, ranging from Ultima IV to Ultima IX (including Ultima Underworld I and II, and Ultima Online).
