Last week we remembered the 32 victims of the 22 March 2016 terrorist attacks in Brussels and those who survived in an exhibition organised by my colleague Saskia Bricmont. The exhibition showed the stories of those who were left scarred for life - physically and psychologically.

While we debate, Volkswagen is firing 100.000 workers and closing 4 plants. When Opel Antwerp was closed for “overproduction” in 2010, I was one of those workers. Bosses simply wanted to move production abroad where labour was cheaper and labour protections weaker.

Last November, I attended a hearing with Commissioner Magnus Brunner, responsible for Internal affairs and Migration. I asked him about EU migration partnerships with third countries through which EU countries outsource surveillance and violence against migrants and keep them out of Europe.

In May, Khaled El Hishri stood for trial before the the ICC for crimes against humanity perpetuated in Libyan prisons between 2014 and 2020. El Hishri committed, ordered, and oversaw enslavement, torture, sexual violence, and murder against detainees - women and children - in Mitiga Prison.

The number of workers dying at work is still incredibly high, about 3,300 per year across the EU. No worker should not return home after a day at work. Workplaces must be safer and employers must comply with health and safety rules. Ms von der Leyen's deregulation agenda will not help at all.
