Being less horrible than the other guy while saying that you'll continue the status quo people are unhappy with loses elections. And my state is ranked choice so I can vote for people I do like while still voting for a major party.

Most of your takes are pretty good, but ignoring Gaza was Kamala's downfall. You can't have people be angry with what the current admin is doing and tell people that you will do more of the same and succeed as a candidate.

My takeaway from visiting SF is that people who take Waymo instead of BART need to be taxed significantly more.

A real shout out to the now father of a half-SE Asian half-white baby born outside the US who told me in November that he didn't think that anything was gonna change. I was drunk at the time so I couldn't come up with something clever to say, but I think about his wife and kid a lot.

I don't live in the US, the chicken they sell here is so much smaller than American chicken. And when I last lived in the US, I never bought supermarket meat. I typically bought it from local farms, but at home my partner and I eat primarily vegetarian because neither of us likes cooking meat.

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 05/05/2025
Capitalism optimizes for things like chickens who grow so large they can't support their body weight. Things like that are fucked up and are inherently different from raising animals with the goal of feeding yourself and your community.

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 05/05/2025
I see you missed the "not act weirdly morally superior" part. That's the difference.

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 05/05/2025
Veganism isn't inherently ethical, there is obviously nothing that will make you believe that. Capitalist business practices around food are probably the least ethical. That's where you get the CAFOs and the palm oil plantations and the rich white people buying quinoa so the locals can't afford it

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 05/05/2025
No, but I'm going to respect my friends from other cultures where they are and not act weirdly morally superior about not eating them.

I'm not saying that animals are perfect and we should emulate them, I'm saying that humans are naturally omnivores, so eating meat isn't ethically wrong. What's ethically wrong would be wasting food or being ungrateful for it.
100
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 05/05/2025
Other animals eat animals, so I don't see why humans shouldn't too. We aren't special. I much rather be part of the food chain and eat real food than eat processed stuff that is made of things like palm oil which is killing the environment.

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 05/05/2025
Not all animal products come from big farms. If people want to eat vegan that's their perogative, but if you are a vegetarian or omnivore you shouldn't be forced to eat vegan just because you don't want to eat meat.

Hinge should come up with additional options because it's useful to know if they are Independent as in I hate Biden from the right or Independent as in I hate Biden from the left.

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 05/05/2025
That's why Hinge having you list your political affiliation is so helpful. If they list themselves as Republican or Moderate, you don't need to bother with them because it won't work out anyways.

In most of the US, bad drivers will continue to keep driving even if their license has been taken away because there isn't any good public transport. I can't police all of that, I care more about pedestrians and bikes staying safe.
010
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 29/04/2025
It's an accurate answer to my real life experience. I was driven around by an asshole who by speeding up to do so then almost hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk once. The system needs to protect pedestrians and bikes way more than it currently does.
000
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 29/04/2025
But it will mean that drivers have a red light when pedestrians are moving and it will therefore be more safe.
000
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
My favorite way to drive in the US is to piss off the people behind me by going the speed limit and doing what I'm supposed to but slowly and carefully so that they don't just go around me.
100
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
Ugh. I'm so not looking forward to being back in the US. Being able to trust drivers to not hit you is really awesome.

I don't have a pic, but my computer science teacher friend had their students looking up computer science terms with ChatGPT and it gave them entirely incorrect answers.
000
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
My original comment was because what that driver did honestly didn't seem that bad. He was going slowly and saw the people. Maybe I'm just used to SE Asia where pedestrians can trust that you won't get run over if they just keep walking and don't change direction suddenly.
200
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
That's why the system is a problem. Because people can't be counted on to drive well and because opposing traffic is being given green lights at the same time. Walking in Hanoi and Jakarta literally feels safer than walking in Pittsburgh
300
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
You aren't hitting the pedestrian, you are moving into and then sitting in the middle of an intersection waiting to turn while the pedestrian crosses the street parallel to your original orientation. Just think about how traffic lights work, come on
100
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
Because the people behind you can see the light but can't see that there's people in front of you and it's not uncommon for them to A) honk angrily and B) drive around you and hit the pedestrian because they couldn't see them.

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
Not to mention that some pedestrians are stupid and will cause a Midwestern Standoff (two people trying "out-nice" each other)

Her campaign lost because they refused to acknowledge what was going on in the middle east. She couldn't win Michigan with her stance and she needed it mathematically. Biden was wildly unpopular but she was like "yeah, things will stay the same"

Also dude, I don't even own a car. The only times I drive are when visiting my family in the suburbs because not all of it is all that cyclable. But I do know what car people are thinking and try to compensate for their stupidity so they don't hit people

Left on red (unless it's a one way, which Idk the rules on) is pretty egregious. In Pittsburgh the big frustration was that the walk signs went with the direction of the lights instead of having a scramble time where all the cars had to stop and wait. Car left turns sucked for everyone.

rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
I am very pro-pedestrian but this is a system problem. As the driver, you have to move forward a little because if you don't move when you get the green light, the person behind you will get pissed and go around you and hit the person instead.
130
rubixcuber42.bsky.social @rubixcuber42.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
The problem is that they are both told to move at the same time. At most intersections, the time to walk is when the light is green and people turning have to yield to you. The thing is, that leaves them sitting in the middle of the intersection just waiting for you to move.

One thing that surprised me most living abroad is that because of street food and small eateries, cooking at home isn't necessarily the cheapest option. It's not expected that everyone lives somewhere with a full kitchen to cook chicken in. So yeah, let's get tacos!

Thinking about just how many things (especially in Pittsburgh, but also around the world) are named for Andrew Carnegie. Or how everything near Troy, NY is named for Russell Sage Both were scumbags, but they also have colleges named after them.

He's fully an adult, he speaks the language of the area, he has spent his whole life navigating w/o reading, and he has obviously never had this reaction to asking for directions before. It's definitely not ideal for someone who just has a seizure to be alone, but weird shit happens dude.

He's not blind, he just can't read. I've successfully navigated cities in countries where I can't read the signs, it's not that hard as long as people are helpful when you ask for help instead of trying to arrest you.

Exactly. There are so many Israelis who have been protesting their own government. Many of them just wanted the hostages back, not to demolish Palestine. As an American abroad people are sometimes surprised when I don't support the atrocities of my govt and like of course I don't, why would I?

That's because the Dem establishment put their all against him in 2016. People volunteered for him with an enthusiasm I've never seen in other candidates. Harris's campaign was actively making people not want to volunteer for her.
