This is how systemic problems are entrenched. There's a book "Weapons of Math Destruction" by Kathy O'Neil that's worth a read on even well intentioned systems and the harm they cause at scale. This will very likely directly harm LBGTQIA+ creators. You could also go back to IBM's classic quote.

I love when I'm discussing gamedev and someone comments dislike of genAI is mostly a Western culture thing. Sure, they're not wrong, but also they tend to be the countries devs pursue the most as they're the largest markets for games. That's like saying only mechanics care about shoddy tools.

I love and hate that school age kids "That's AI" is slang for something of poor quality not actually AI I like it because it really locks in AI = garage quality which in turn will gradually destroy the marketing value of the term AI. I only dislike it'll make pointing out actual AI more confusing.

It's a reminder how we all live different experiences watching someone you know super excited about something they did and you're happy they're excited while also confused why they're excited about something fairly trivial / mundane to you. Then realize just as often your roles are reversed.

Yep, as much as I rail on GenAI. StackOverflow was imploding long before LLMs entered the scene. StackOverflow gamified moderating questions. That wound up creating a toxic culture that made it unwelcoming and discouraged asking questions. Asking and answering questions was its whole purpose.

Senior Dev advice to beginner game devs. "Don't repeat yourself" Are you going to do something more than twice? Abstract it. All sounds should be played via the same common function. All blur effects should be handled by the same common function. It's far more adaptable and maintainable.

And another game completed. The grand last achievements were gorging my character on copious amounts of soda, coffee, donuts, and croque monsieurs.

Crunch is an overt failure by leadership. Either they allocated too few resources, scope creeped, made deadlines too ambitious, etc. Most dev roles are salary meaning they are not even paid extra for overtime / crunch. Even if compensated, it's still exploitive and a way to kill a dev's passion.

It's a good time to be a gamer, an overwhelming time, but a good time. There are so many new titles you have your pick, and be as picky as you like as you have more options then you'll ever be able to play. It's easy to get caught up on the negatives the industry is going through and miss the good

I often turn away game offers due to generative AI. I had a dev state they didn't use genAI in their game, I pointed out their AI disclosure. They pushed back that it was their capsule art / marketing not the game itself. My dude. WHERE the genAI is isn't why I'm out, it's that you it was used.

Creators, one thing I think helps with content decisions is realizing not all videos and streams serve the same purpose. Sure most are viewers / growth focused, some are about broadening your audience, marketability, collaboration, sponsorship / revenue, rewarding your body community, etc.

Most of the time when I get a key offer I'm not interested in I simply respond with "thank you for consideration, however I'm going to pass on (game) because (reason)" which is typically poor fit, predatory micro transactions, etc. I've only had unprofessional renponses when my reason was genAI.

Using GenAI to provide translations is woefully inadequate bordering useless. Consider subtitles are considered inadequate to the point of unusable once accuracy dips below ~97%. GenAI based translation hits well below that standard. You need humans handling this to be effective.

Hi, it's the year 2026. If you're releasing a game this year it's not okay to not allow players to disable motion blur (if present), disable screen shake (if present), and reconfigure their controls. In this day and age that alone is justification to refund as those are major accessibility issues.

Honestly, I think all the games heaping their releases all in September to get ahead of GTA 6 have created a worse situation for themselves than releasing at the same time as GTA 6. Yes, GTA 6 is going to dominate the news impacting sales, but holy hell the amount of games dropping in Sept is wild.

My analogy is to treat a stream like a live performance on stage that invites audience participation, banter, and some heckling. So jeering and quips are all in good fun, but shouting about someone who just died or a recent tragedy is not generally appropriate.

Hey, big bro Gobs here. I understand the news over the last two days has been very sad & many of us are deeply affected by it. This doesn't EVER mean you can make your first message in somebody's chat news that someone has died. I've seen it happen multiple times in the last 36 hours now.

Friendly reminder with current discourse going on we're seeing lots of the dilemma fallacy (this-or that fallacy) bad faith arguments. This is a bad faith argument tactic where you're effectively asked to pick the better of only two options as if they're the only options, which is seldom true.

#GameDev friendly reminder when sending out emails to creators to potentially cover your game... Don't forget to include the name of your game and a link to your steam page. (I've run into that twice today, one the game actually looked good, but I had to email them back to ask what the game is)

Quietly dropping this without a peep from Twitch is some really shady bull crap. I've defended a lot of stuff Twitch does, but not this. At least have the stones to announce it versus being deceitful and trying to slip it by. If it weren't for current and pending EU regulations we'd never know :/

Half of the time I see "look at the hands clearly it's AI!" I just see poorly drawn hands not AI. Sure when there's something obvious like too many fingers impossible spaces, etc. yeah... Probably AI. Hands that just look bad? Hands suck, they're one of the hardest parts of human anatomy to draw.

Been playing quite a bit of Planet Coaster 2 in my free time lately. I've always enjoyed a good tycoon and there's just something nice about theme park design. Just wrapped up the last achievement and looking forward to what's next for Planet Coaster and the mysterious teased next Planet game.

Such a common recent trend "PvPvE games out with no intent of a PvE mode" after pressure, they reluctantly offer a temporary or limited PvE mode that becomes wildly successful. Just include a PvE mode, if your PvE aspects are any good they don't need PvP to prop them up.

There's no sentence more than "we missed the mark" in apology messages I feel comes across as less sincere. Partly because I've personally heard "Do you think the 'we missed the mark' or the 'strive to do better' template would perform better for hitting our KPIs?" before in person.

Some of my strongest advice to people doing any type of dev as a career. - Be okay saying "I don't know" (but will figure it out) - Learn how and when to say "no" - Learn how to learn effectively, because learning never stops in tech. - Learn proper and effective communication. - Pad your estimates

Every Millennial home owner I know has at least one screamingly bright colored wall (including me, my bathroom is bright teal) Look at our cloths, we like bright neon colors. Look at our devices vibrant reds, yellows, pinks, etc. We complain constantly about boring colors of cars and businesses.

I'm learning way more about Canadian topography than I expected. Admitting my own uninformedness I thought it was just boreal forest with mountains and rocky shores. Like someone took northern Washington and just made a whole country of that. It's obvious in hindsight just never thought about it.

Most of my interactions with devs publishers, and their PR agencies have been positive and professional. The short list of times responses were rude, belligerent, or otherwise antagonistic the games involved NFTs, Crypto, and/or GenAI with only a single exception.

I've never found the argument that we shouldn't make a rule, because it'd be unenforceable convincing. Preventing cheating online is hell, but not making it against the rules is absurd. Same with required genAI disclosures. A lot of devs will get away with shirking it, but it should stay a rule.

When the result of an action is negative the individual will be less likely to repeat that action. If a successful and unsuccessful game release both result in layoffs, the most predictable outcome is for those individuals to leave game development entirely. Which is a loss for everyone.

I hate the state of the games industry watching talented devs successfully launch new and profitable titles... Then being laid off for it anyways... We need far stronger employee and consumer protection laws on such an openly hostile and antagonist industry. Support publishers who support devs.

It annoys me when something happens and people go "That's what you get for buying a license instead of a game" then go on how physical is forever. Physical wears out, as do the devices to play them. You can make a backup, but look me in the eye and tell me you have backups of your physical media.

... Find and Replace isn't "AI", nor is code completion, nor is REGEX, etc. These all predate the current "AI" craze by literal decades. I hate how effective genAI companies deliberate muddying of the term AI has been. Agent generated coded or "Vibe coding" IS GenAI. The rest don't depend on LLMs

The Mandalorian movie was a solidly alright movie. A lot of fun, but clearly was meant to be a TV series mashed into a movie with some excellent and some not so great execution. I enjoyed it, but I'd put it just between Solo and Episode 9 on my tier list. Granted extra points for Swole the Hutt.

"Why aren't you playing as many demos?" Rampant undisclosed genAI use has me hesitant to take chances with games who don't explicitly and publicly reject genAI. Increased malware in games means niche unknown games are riskier. So many games releasing is exhausting meaning I've gotta be pickier.

It's good! People sleep on Discounty! It's sort of Stardew esk in the you come to a small town and create a life for yourself. Except instead of farming you run a supermarket. It has more story / characters have more personality, with no focus on romance, etc. A nice unique entry to the genre.

Well depending on which character most would probably do fine as a mild mannered reporter or the owner of a run down 50s diner. We just need to really hope it's not my channel's mascot who's a very happy crab you shouldn't trust. (Just a quick paint sketch I did for charity)

In art classes we're told specifically to be careful making art by memory as details are lost / generalized, hence the importance of seeking quality references. If you're using AI as a reference you're basically creating from memory, just a computer's fever dream memory vs your own.

This is such a common mistake devs make. There is the assumption "If I make it good enough, word of mouth will carry the marketing". Reality is marketing is one of your largest / critical spends. (in cash and/or time) Marketing gets people to your game, only then does your game itself matter.
