This has been incorporated in public education in Ontario for grade 8 students. So it has become standard knowledge here, but apparently it needs to be more widespread. Check yourselves, check your peers, make sure everyone in your circle understands consent.

Today I got around to the fire to finish making the charred cloth. Because I had run out of charred cloth I couldn't manage to catch a spark so I resorted to starting with my magnesium striker on gathered thistle fluff, white pine cones, and cotton scraps on a bed of wood shavings from the workshop.

Today I am cutting up old cotton bedsheets and making charred cloth - used to hold a spark when using flint and steel to start fires. It is easy to make so long as you have a tin with a lid, plant fiber cloth, and enough heat. I have only ever made this in a camp fire but should work in an oven.
On an old picnic table with blue chipped paint are two tins (a rolled waffer tin and a tea tin), old cotton fabric, and a knife. Preparing the cloth to be small palm sized pieces to be placed into the tins and then into the fire pit.

This is why the narrative of "white" identity needs to be dropped. The accurate label is "European-American". Don't like it? Good, stop doing it to other Americans then. Rejecting "White" breaks the myth that perpetuates racism and needs to happen if we want to reach a post racism world.

Update, The American Lotus seed I sandpapered 1st, sprouted 1st. That one and the lotus already in the cylinder glass vessel were planted in my large pot outside with more direct & longer sunlight. The species has low genetic diversity, each are different sources and so hopefully also gene pools.
Two glass cylinder jars filled with water and each with an American Lotus seed sprouting (Nelumbo lutea). The sprout on the left was sandpapered on the flat end until the white nut was seen first before placing in jar of water. The seedling on the right was soaked in glass jar at the same time for 48 hours before sanding the seed the same way as the 1st.

The sanded before soaking seedling sprouted in 4 days. The 48 hours soaked then sanded seed sprouted in 7 days since soak began, or 6 days since sanding. Two glass cylinder jars filled with water and each with an American Lotus seed sprouting (Nelumbo lutea). Growing more American Lotus so I can transplant the two I grew indoors into the big pot outside (3 in that pot did not take, water changes were needed) The new sprouts will take their place indoors. This time I am experimenting with two different approaches to see which, if at all, perform better.
Two glass vessels sitting on a shelf by a window - one square faced and narrow, the othe other a cylinder with a footing. Each filled with 5cm (1 inch) of charcoal from fire pot, then 15cm (3 inches) of clay silt - the square vessel has the addition of worm castings layer - then topped with distilled water. Each has American / Yellow Lotuses (Nelumbo lutea) growing and starting to open their first leaves.

In the foreground are three coral fossils. Two jars with labels that read, "Soak 48 hrs then file, Friday 17 12026 14:50", "File 1st Then soak Friday 17 12026 14:50"Lotus seed round end sanded until you see the white of the nut meat. The two American / Yellow Lotus seeds (Nelumbo lutea) soaking in water that both will recieve daily water changes. One is filed first, soaked, the other will soak for 48 hours then be filed. Daily water changes continue until they sprout, then placed shallowly in the clay silt soil mix and water filled pot at least 10cm / 2 inches deep.

9am, July 16th, 12026 H.E. Manitoulin iland The morning is pale grey, the appearance of fog. The sun, a red disc hanging above through the haze. When the door was opened the scent of smoke spilled in, but this time not near as strong and more akin to sitting beside a very smokey campfire.

10 am, July 15th, 12026 H.E.
The smoke from wildfires North-West of Gichi-Gami (Great Sea, Lake Superior) are blowing South-East over the rest of the lake seas (Great Lakes). Here on the iland of Manitoulin along the north shore of Michi-Gami (Long Body of Water, Lake Michigan-Huron) the smoke is so thick the day appears dusk, we turn on lights to see. Outside is a haze of orange as though looking through fogged tinted glass, cameras poorly capture the color.

When a member of our household exited to go to their job, a strong odor of smoke flooded the nostrils the same as if you placed your head over the smoke of a campfire. As the day goes on the smoke thickens like a dense fog, the orange color deepens.
