Before dropping Jen off to fly home from Boise, we stopped by Wild Frontier Beer Project. The beer was okay, but the theme was great—I loved the topo coasters, outdoor-focused graphics and large recreation map covering the wall, and an upcom... rsjon.es/2026/09/24/before-dropping…

On Saturday at 11am AZ time (MST), you can join the livestream to watch the 2026 release of California Condors from Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona. It’s the 30th anniversary of the wildlife project that saved the species, known for the world’s largest wingspan, from total extinction.

On my drive home from Boise, I found my way up to a cool overlook of the Three Island Crossing of the Snake River——a key decision point for migrants on the Oregon Trail.

We finally stopped at Snoqualmie Falls as we passed by last month. Interesting spot with an interesting claim to fame.

jokes aside, it’s hard not to be humbled at our own little opportunities at, well, just living. What a remarkable experience to have.

I managed to update my /uses page. Major new changes/additions: vehicle, electric cooler, battery, daypack, luggage, exercise stuff, probably some other stuff.

This is my personal take on a /uses page. It also functions as my Default apps for 2024 post (though I’m making it a more permanent addition). Since online reviews are so gamed and broken these days, I wanted to post my stuff so you can ask questions of an actual user of these items. ... Read more

I marked off some new counties on our trip, finishing off California and picking up some in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. I’m quickly closing in on my initial quest goal of 100% of the West + 50% in every state. I’m already at 50% in each state, and should finish the West in 3-4 trips. Whoa!

We made it to Big Hole National Battlefield, the site of the bloodiest battle between the US Army and Nez Perce during the Flight of 1877. The visit marked Jen’s 400th national park unit (she’s getting close to finishing!) and the 250th national park unit I’ve visited more than once.

I’m back in Phoenix after barreling home from Boise the last two days. While we had to dramatically shift the trip due to weather, we still got some good things accomplished. Final road tally was 5045 miles.

no new counties to be had at this point in the trip, but my map is looking better and better. Just 1-2 ID/OR/WA + MT + NM trips to finish the West! I’m about 10 counties away from the 80% mark overall.

We stopped by the Sunbeam Dam site, which I believe is the first dam explicitly breached/removed to help native fish migration. (It’s a little hard to see, but the back third of the dam is missing, allowing the river flow freely on by.)

Well, that was a fun game. 😜 I didn’t know that coaches could agree to shorten a quarter in a blowout. Of course, my favorite 70-7 game was against that team from Tucson in 2020.
Arizona State football players and staff are gathered on the sidelines during a game against Morgan State, with the scoreboard showing Arizona State leading 70 to 7 in the third quarter.

Well, after too many far-too-soggy days of rain, we’ve fully abandoned our original tent camping plans and are retreating eastward. You never know when we’re going to call an major trip audible—sometimes radically changing our route or destination—which is why we’re now en route to…Montana 🤷‍♂️🤪
