@TotesTanked look what I got for my birthday 😀
Photograph of a green T-shirt. It says "Tanks are always political" and the famous photo of a man standing in front of tanks at Tianamen Square can be seen through the letters.

To celebrate my youngest's birthday yesterday we went to a retro arcade. We played old arcade games, including my old favourite, Defender (I'm not as good as I used to be). @JetlagJen made him a space invaders cake. Today is a film day. He'd already […] [Original post on historians.social]

I'm not having a lot of luck with contacting people in Italy to research my next book. A post to a local Facebook group was rejected. Now my letter to Italy has arrived in the US 🙄 Does anyone know if it's likely to get to its destination in Italy? #research #Italy #histodons #RoyalMail #letter
Screenshot of Royal Mail tracking a letter.

It says the destination is Italy and that the item has reached the sorting office in the destination country.

The latest tracking history entry is "Item received at Sorting Office. FLUSHING, United States of America"

We've been to the National Space Centre in Leicester (UK) today. We were there for a gaming event, but I was interested to see they have a Second World War era X-4 missile and Cold War era Thor Able and Blue Streak. Fun fact: @JetlagJen's grandad worked […] [Original post on historians.social]

Starting the year with the Lord of the Rings #BoardGame, and a rare win. We lost Sam and Merry, but Frodo cast the one ring into Mount Doom and saved Middle Earth.
The Lord of the Rings board game. There is a board depicting Mordor, with two hobbits, Gollum, and Mount Doom. There are seven cards depicting various foes, and a corruption track with five hobbit figures around a Sauron figure.

I spent today at Tunstall #library in #StokeOnTrent. It used to be in the same building as a swimming pool, which I thought was wonderfully eccentric. It moved a few years ago, and is now at the top of this fantastic staircase.
A beautiful large staircase that splits at the top.

G. K. #Chesterton #AntiWar, #AntiGovernment #poem seen in a #StokeOnTrent chippy today.
A panel with a flowery border. The poem inside reads:

The men that worked for England
They have their graves at home:
And bees and birds of England
About the cross can roam.

But they that fought for England,
Following a falling star,
Alas, alas for England
They have their graves afar.

And they that rule in England,
In stately conclave met,
Alas, alas for England,
They have no graves as yet.

G. K. Chesterton

I've just seen a game, the rules of which start with "Grab the nearest book". I'm sat at my desk, and this bookshelf is just out of arm's reach. Maybe it's my autism and I'm taking it too literally, but there is no "nearest book".
A small bookshelf filled with lots of books and s few other odds and ends.

This is from a British army magazine article about the Soviet Snapper, Swatter, and Sagger anti-tank missiles. The artist obviously didn't know what a sagger is. If he was from #StokeOnTrent or the surrounding area, he'd know that a sagger is a large clay […] [Original post on historians.social]
A hand drawn illustration of a man in a hammock slung between two trees. The man is swatting a fly, and the word "Swatter" is above him.

There is a dog by the left tree, with the word "Snapper" above the dog.

The word "Sagger" is written by the right tree. The first G is lower than the rest of the letters in the word.

My #PineTime #smartwatch arrived earlier today, and although I don't expect to use it, I was pleased to see that there is an option to have this very geeky watch face.
A smartwatch on a person's wrist. The display is set up to look like a Linux command line terminal.

This morning Facebook reminded me that two years ago, my being out as #NonBinary helped a friend work out their gender and start coming out to people. Also this morning, I threaded my new laces onto my boots.
A pair of brown boots with laces in the colours of the non-binary flag: yellow, white, purple, black.
