TOC * The World * My Week * On The Blog * Notes * Media Diet and Reviews * Reading * Watching * Gaming * Links of Interest * Looking Forward ### The World It feels like the situation in Ukraine is about to come to a head, with Trump and Musk almost openly siding with Russia, mainly by restricting Starlink access in Ukraine, but also by calling on Zelensky to resign. ### My Week Google Fit says I walked 67,494 steps from last Sunday to yesterday. 2.5k steps below target is me chilling out a bit. It was a good week. Managed to go wander around the malls for a couple of days. Found out there's a free QC bus from City Hall to Araneta! That was a nice ride. Browsed some vintage shops in Cubao. I love browsing like old comics, books, toys, magazines, games, that kind of thing, and it's very rare to have shops like that around here. The only reasonably accessible places for me are in Cubao (mainly in Cubao Expo and Ali Mall) and Greenhills, which is a bit harder to get to. I never actually buy anything, but it's fun to see old stuff. Trivia team attended a quiz night last Thursday, but we did poorly. ### On The Blog * Wrote about living forever. * Wrote about being targetted by a phishing call. ### Notes On Oct. 14, 2026, 10:19 p.m. I wrote: > A thing that happens far too often: I am reading some very old post on my blog and I have links out to now-defunct mailing lists or forums that I used to be active on and now I am sad/annoyed that I can no longer access all of my old activity on those sites. I am playing the new Grand Arena event a bit, but it is much less interesting. * Single-player games: * Ongoing: * **Super Mario Galaxy 2** on the Nintendo Switch. I think I am currently at around 94 stars. * **Tales of Xillia 2** on RPCS3. I think I am in chapter 5 or 6? * **Final Fantasy IX** on Steam Deck. Resumed my save I was playing a couple of months ago. I started this run in Feb 2017, so it's a few months away from being a decade-long save! I finally beat Ozma this week and there's not much left to do (other than super grindy achievements) so maybe I'll actually just finish the game soon and write about it. * There's so many good new Steam releases this past week and the next and I put them all in my cart to see which ones I am tempted to pull the trigger on. All of them?!? * Also I found out recently that I still had a bunch of unactivated games from when I was still semi-active on Humble Choice. I went through them and ended up adding like 20 titles to my Steam library! ### Links of Interest Not a lot this week. * links 🔗 Study explores how AI use affects performance on math and reasoning tasks - Berkeley News > Researchers recently found that people who had access to AI just 10 minutes relying on an AI tool while solving math and reasoning problems significantly affected the user's ability to focus and persist with difficult tasks. Whenever anyone goes "I tried LLMs actually and it's fine as long as {conditions} and {reasons}" I'm reminded that there are many studies about how these things weaken cognitive abilities so any LLM user's reasoning should be suspect. ### Looking Forward Some more release I'm looking forward to this week: * Oct22 Final Fantasy Resonance * Oct23 One Piece Grand Gourmet (lol) My bro and I might watch the Street Fighter movie this coming week. The reviews say its kind of dumb, but maybe I'm fine with that okay?

New blog post: A Phishing Call roytang.net/2026/10/phishing-call

A Phishing Call
I was maybe 10 minutes into a late night walk some time past 9pm when the phone rang. The guy claimed to be from $BANK's fraud department and claimed someone was trying to charge my account for around 80,000 pesos or something like that. I was immediately suspicious and turned to walk back home but stayed on the line. He could not answer many of my questions about the event that triggered the problem or which of my accounts was affected (I have multiple with this bank). He kept saying the line was choppy and hard to hear, maybe to avoid answering some of my questions? At some point he dropped the call and reconnected. He gave me his name and rank and Id#, which seemed super weird. I asked for a ticket number to reference. He said he would forward me to his operations manager who would be able to give more details. He transfered me to a different guy, who still could not give me details or a ticket number. He said there was an unauthorized login attempt by someone pretending to be me (a different story than the initial one!) and that he would forward a text to show what was being sent to another mobile number. I got the text and it was a 2FA text for resetting your password. He went on and on about how that was from a valid $BANK number that could not be spoofed. By now I had gotten back home to my desk and computer. I logged in to the $BANK website and found no problems. I told him I would be hanging up and calling the official hotline. He made a big deal about how the customer support won't be able to handle this case and they can't prioritize me and only his department can and he finally gave me a ticket number and his name and id#. I told him I would be calling the hotline and if he's for real he would just need to wait for the call to be redirected to him. I ended the call and started calling the official hotline. They tried to call me back from the same number TWICE while I was on the phone menu. I spoke to a CS agent and told them what happened. They confirmed all my accounts were fine and the credentials and ticket number I was given were not real. I also reported the phone number used to call me and confirmed it was not a valid $BANK support number. They said a cybersecurity report would be filed. Out of an abundance of caution, I also temporarily locked my accounts via the webapp. That was a stressful couple of calls. At first you feel panic because maybe some money had been lost, so it may be hard to think straight. But as long as you stay calm and ask for details you can spot any problems with their story. I'm always cautious with my banking information and know not give out any personal information and not click any links so that helps. The challenging part is staying vigilant in that moment, which could come at any time, which means constantly staying vigilant, which can be exhausting. I totally understand how some people could fall for these scams. I also kind of understand these scammers; living is hard and you have to make money somehow. But also I wouldn't mind if they rot in hell or bad karma or something. Totally normal response to this sort of thing, probably. A friend told me maybe I should not have taken the call from an unknown number at all. I think I'm used to taking calls from unknown numbers nowadays because it's a common practice for delivery riders to call you. But then again, no delivery riders would be working past 9pm, so maybe I should have ignored the call. Not even bank loan spammers call outside of office hours!

New blog post: Who Wants to Live Forever? roytang.net/2026/10/live-forever
roytang.net
Who Wants to Live Forever?
I read someone's post yesterday about how they don't understand people who want to live forever. That they are glad that their life will eventually come to an end. I can certainly appreciate that sentiment: living is hard and can feel like a burden and the world sucks, especially in our current timeline. And I even feel low enough sometimes that I just want to retreat from everything. And I know that someday, all things must end. Eventually. But I still find myself occasionally fantasizing about living forever. Not an absolute immortality obviously, more of "immune to age and disease" and not "still alive floating through space during the heat death of the universe" immortality. I'm not insane. My main motivation about wanting to live forever is my continuing annoyance at not having enough time to do all the things I want to do, read the books I want to read, play the games I want to play, watch all the movies and TV I want to watch, and so on. I always tell myself if I ever become a supervillain, my origin story would involve trying to become immortal. Outliving everyone you know and watching them all grow old and die is going to suck obviously (the Superman problem), but that's the counterpart of worrying about what happens to your loved ones after your die, so that's kind of a wash I guess? And I know all of this is just a fantasy and not going to happen, but the most important thing about being immortal would be seeing where all of this goes. Has humanity screwed up too much or can we still recover? Are we headed for a Star Trek future or a Terminator one? I want to know! * * * One aspect of immortality that I feel is often not considered in fiction is that I think it's very likely that immortality would slowly drive one insane. For the same reason that I think billionaires are also at least slightly insane: a life divorced from the concerns of ordinary people gradually warps your perspective so that you are unable to understand the thinking of normal people. And that's just billionaires with a normal lifetime, I can only imagine that living hundreds of years means your thinking is vastly different from most people. This may or may not mean insanity, but consider also that human brains would probably not have evolved to consider centuries worth of experiences! * * * I already had most of this post down before a sense of deja vu suggested I had already written about this before. And I did, 10 years ago! My sentiments remain largely the same, so this post is more of a decade-later affirmation than anything else. * * * In 2001, I wrote a Final Fantasy IX fanfic titled Nobody Wants to Live Forever. It is not related to this post's content at all.

TOC * The World * My Week * On The Blog * Media Diet and Reviews * Reading * Watching * Gaming * Links of Interest * Looking Forward ### The World RIP Margaret Hamilton, pioneering software engineer for the Apollo Program. She lived long enough to witness the end of software engineering as a viable career. Despite a last-minute campaign by good old DJT, the Nobel Peace Prize to activist Navi Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law. She worked with the ICC to charge Netanyahu with war crimes. Shortly after being snubbed, the US government issued sanctions on the ICC and DJT threatened Norway saying he would never forget. Speaking of sanctions, DJT and the US government are also planning to set aside sanctions on Russia so they can buy Russian diesel. Zelensky has called this a weak move that in practice supports the Russian war on Ukraine. Trump says that maybe Ukraine needs a new president. Also, Trump's Secretary of War (a most ridiculous title) announced plans to livestream an execution by firing squad. By firing squad! I didn't even know modern civilized societies still did that sort of thing. The plan has been roundly criticized, and rightly so. Generative AI continues to disrupt the digital world. People are using Claude and decompiling software like the Adobe Creative Suite and making them open source. Games like GTA5, Modern Warfare, and Halo are being decompiled using GenAI and made available in the browser! OpenAI also claims to have solved hundreds of pending math problems, upending a lot of research (but will take months to be verified). Despite my many many problems with the use of Generative AI, it's hard to deny the impact it has. ### My Week Google Fit says I walked 70,257 steps from last Sunday to yesterday. It's good to get back to target, but also checking my records not only am I still on track to beat last year's total step count, but even if I only walked 60k steps a week for the remaining 11-odd weeks of the year, I would still beat 2024's step count and set a new lifetime record! So maybe I can chill out a bit lol. Had a relaxed week. Trying to get some old side projects again. Trying to apply to some jobs (I'm not really feeling it). Being sad about the state of software engineering. I find myself at an age where every random weird thing or muscle pain or whatever in my body gives me worry. At least my cold went away. Niece#4 celebrated her birthday this past week. We were not able to get together with them, though we did see them last week. ### On The Blog * Wrote reviews for Uncharted and Tomb Raider games. ### Media Diet and Reviews #### Reading * Books: Still no new books started yet. * Comics: Finished Claremont's run on _Uncanny X-Men_! Still gonna read a bit more because I think there's still a few issues after that before I started reading regularly. Still trying to finish _Punisher War Zone_. Still behind on new comics, but I did read the first issues of Marvel's new Midnight universe. * Feed reader backlog: Feed reader is back down to 361 unread items as of this writing, a slight drop from last week, so I am at least keeping pace. #### Watching * Ongoing: **Stewart Fails To Save The Universe** (I think I am like 2 or 3 episodes behind), **Ranma 1/2 S3** * Finished: **Lanterns** (not a great ending) * Binged: **Matlock S1**. This was on NF and I needed a new procedural for background watching, and the overarching story ended up pretty engrossing so I finished the first season this week. NF says the second season will drop tomorrow! * Movies: Didn't watch any movies at all in September, but this week I watched A Time to Kill (1996). #### Gaming * Multiplayer games: * **Magic Arena** : Drafting Reality Fracture, failing to get achievements. * **Marvel Snap** : Still drafting as well! * Yesterday I decided to try streaming on Twitch again. Took me a bit to set up OBS on Garuda but I got there eventually and streamed two hours of Snap drafting in the morning and two hours of Reality Fracture drafting on Arena in the evening. Links in the last sentence are to Youtube VOD exports. * Single-player games: * Ongoing: * I finished **Super Mario Galaxy 2** on the Nintendo Switch! Well, the main story at least, with the bare minimum of 71 stars. There's quite a bit more to go. * Started: * **Tales of Xillia 2**. This was the last PS3 I purchased and I've been meaning to replay it since I played through Tales of Xillia again earlier this year. However, my PS3 seems to be dying. :( The video output keeps flaking out, despite my best efforts. Undeterred, I turned to an old friend: emulation. So now I am playing Tales of Xillia 2 via RPCS3. This does make things a bit more convenient in terms of taking screen captures etc. ### Links of Interest * links 🔗 The Silent War for the Soul of Software - drac.at > "LLMs are being pushed on us at every turn, most people seem at best frustrated by them, and ultimately they seem to appeal most to people who see the production of software as a purely mechanical means to an end. Unlikely that I play this immediately though, since I did just start a Tales. Also it's been a while, but trivia team is planning to attend a quiz night this week.

“I’m Embarrassed on Behalf of the Tech Industry”
That’s something Ben Thompson said a recent episode of Dithering. He was referring to how he felt while trying to help his mom get control of her digital life. Everything was just too hard and convoluted and he felt embarrassed as someone who works in tech. That very same evening, I randomly got this text from a family member. I hear this a lot from family and friends who sit outside tech. “Nothing works.” “Everything is hard to use.” “I can’t make sense of this.” And to them I am a representative, a connection, to this pain in their lives. And I, too, am embarrassed on behalf of the tech industry — by our collective failure.

TOC * The World * My Week * On The Blog * Media Diet and Reviews * Reading * Watching * Gaming * Links of Interest * Looking Forward It is October! Somehow the year is already more than 75% over. ### The World Public transportation in Metro Manila had a fare increase last Monday. I'd complain, but honestly the drivers already earn so little they deserve a raise. The economy is a challenge for everybody. ### My Week Google Fit says I walked 67,578 steps from last Sunday to yesterday, breaking the 70k week streak after a while. I missed the mark on Saturday, having to stay at home a lot. I'm still in a good spot though, in terms of beating last year's step count total. Went out early in the week to get my test results and talk to the doctor again. Results are all good, so we just observe again for a while and hopefully I won't have any medical things to worry about until 2027. While I was at the hospital I had a random encounter where I ran into one of my first mentees back in my early years of working! We haven't seen each other in 16 years and he has changed so much I was hesitant to approach him at first because maybe it wasn't him?!? But he recognized me instantly! It's good to see random people again after so long. Had a bit of a cold for most of the week so I mostly just chilled at home. New month means the regular monthly adulting nonsense like paying bills etc. Feeling lost and unsure where to go still, maybe always and forever. ### On The Blog * Finally wrote a review for FF7 Rebirth. ### Media Diet and Reviews #### Reading * Books: Still no new books started yet. * Comics: Mostly just reading Claremont-era _Uncanny X-Men_ , and falling far behind on current comics. * Feed reader backlog: Feed reader is back down to 380 unread items as of this writing, a good drop! Let's see if I can keep that up. #### Watching * Ongoing: **Lanterns** (caught up, one episode remains), , **Stewart Fails To Save The Universe** * Finished: **ER seasons 1-15**!! I'm free!, **Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S4** * Started: **Ranma 1/2 S3** , first episode came out on NF today! * Movies: No new movies this week. #### Gaming * Multiplayer games: * **Magic Arena** : Crushed my first Reality Fracture draft and have been playing some trad draft trying to get an achievement. * **Marvel Snap** : Almost uninstalled it, but then they brought draft mode back, so now I'm doing one of those a day. * Single-player games: * Ongoing: * I think this week was mostly just **Super Mario Galaxy 2** on the Nintendo Switch: Slogging along, collecting stars etc. I think I'm at around 52 stars now out of 120 regulars, which seems like a good pace after two weeks. * **Graveyard Keeper** (Steam): Kind of let this one go, haven't played it since last Monday. * **Pathfinder: Kingmaker** (Steam): Still checking in occasionally on my little barony, but it's not especially compelling. ### Links of Interest * links 🔗 You are one of one – Michael Julius > This is the first time in history when a whole generation is being told or tempted to have a machine write for them. You are one of one, unprecedented in the history of human evolution. There’s only one of you. So to give your voice to a machine to say speak for me, I’m going to be silent, and I’m going to tell a machine to express myself or to tell my narrative, is such a crime against yourself. It’s so dystopian, beyond anything I could do in a dystopian novel, and I did a lot. * links 🔗 The Game Ends Either Way - Bridgette Day (Sadly Substack) A poignant example of how unique memories can be formed by childhood videogames > But life doesn’t work like that of course, and we all grew up and moved on and left that world behind. > > We can’t pick up again where we left off, even if we wanted to. > > And time will hurry you along, to somewhere else, somewhere new, every minute. Every second. > > And your path doesn’t stay parallel with the ones you love; you will all diverge in the end. > > Whether you play, or whether you don’t — > > The game ends, either way. * links 🔗 They killed knowledge - A Working Library > There is no trust in them, because there is no truth in them. Is there a better phrase to describe the internet today, with the myriad of lies and forgeries slipped in among the real? With the enormous scale of disinformation, of knowledge subverted to consumption? They killed knowledge, Zove says. Are we not witnessing the same murder, day by day, one banned book, one ad, one fake search result at a time? * links 🔗 Winnie Lim » running a personal website is not fun anymore > It takes spiritual energy to create, maintain and produce personal projects. At the core, these projects exists because there is a belief in some sense of shared humanity. I write because I believe someone out there resonates with my experiences. I am almost certainly forgetting some stuff.

running a personal website is not fun anymore
I’ve had a personal website since I was 15, in 1996. Back then it was hosted on geocities. I started to host my own blog somewhen around the year 2000. Over the decades I’ve migrated my blogging to other hosted platforms like livejournal, vox, posterous, wordpress.com, medium, etc but in 2015 I decided I want to stop experimenting with other platforms in order to have a forever home with my writing. I started to feel the importance of permalinks – how disruptive and saddening it is when cherished posts by other people go 404. I’ve been an advocate of personal websites for a very long time. Back then I was pro-technology and didn’t fully understand my privilege in many ways. I was always advocating for personal websites without realising how much work it is for the average person. The technical part of it was fun for me so I had mistakenly assumed it would be fun for everyone else. To have a _self-hosted_ personal website, one must: * find a good enough hosting provider – easier said than done * be willing to pay a subscription every month * learn ftp * learn how to set up a database or static site generator * simple html/css to customise some basic things There are tasks that are just annoying in the beginning like setting up a database or learning how to use a static site generator, but once these things are set up one can relax and simply focus on the content. I thought it was worth the effort to have an almost blank canvas we can then put anything on. It is difficult to have such a space in reality, but online we can collect, express, share anything we want. A couple of years ago my host emailed me to say that googlebot was hitting my site aggressively, so they had to block it to be fair to other users on the shared server. There were quite a few posts people were discovering through google so I was disappointed that they wouldn’t be able to find them anymore, but I wasn’t in a mental space to deal with it, so I accepted it. It was then peaceful for a while. But running wordpress on its own is also stressful, people are always seeking to exploit its vulnerabilities. That was still bearable once I installed a couple of reputable security plugins. At this point people would be asking, why don’t I just run a static site? I chose wordpress for many reasons, but the main reason is because I wanted a fully dynamic website to so I can surface and display relationships between my content. So I chose to put up with all the quirks that come with running wordpress. A few weeks ago this site was successfully hacked for the first time in its history, bypassing all its defences. My site was just one of the many that were affected in what we now know as the wp2shell exploit. I managed to fix it still. But just a week or two later they exploited a vulnerability in one of the plugins this site relies upon. This site is over 10 years old and this is the first time attacks are happening consecutively. Why? AI, obviously. I feel dirty even typing the word out. It is being used to find vulnerabilities at a speed and depth that didn’t occur before. So I patched the site again, and the next thing I know is that bots are clogging up matomo, which I use to view referral traffic etc. I’ve used robots.txt and .htaccess to block them but most of them are masquerading as humans. I look at the site’s access logs and it is just bots, bots, bots everywhere. Somehow the idea that this site’s content is being scraped for AI is strangely violating. I am contemplating putting this site behind cloudflare, but personally I don’t enjoy the user experience when I visit sites behind it. I can’t really explain why – it is just a temporary loading screen. It is weird to even contemplate putting a small personal website with low traffic behind cloudflare. I’m spiritually exhausted with these bots. If I’m having so much frustration as a former technically-inclined person, I can’t imagine the average person trying to run a self-hosted personal website. Sadly platforms are the way to go for the average person. I feel like this phenomenon is not just about personal websites. It feels like a harbinger of some sort. Some people would probably say we’re already over the harbinger stage for quite a while now. I’ve personally argued that we are probably living in the dark times but dark times are only obvious when viewed with the lens of history. Maybe people think I am exaggerating: how can I associate AI bots rampaging personal websites with the dark ages? It is the lack of care and thought in everything. The callousness. Not just about AI, but everything. It takes spiritual energy to create, maintain and produce personal projects. At the core, these projects exists because there is a belief in some sense of shared humanity. I write because I believe someone out there resonates with my experiences. But when everything starts to be about speed, utility and power, life becomes a dehumanising experience. Why should I take the time and effort – the deep meditative state I need to reach to translate my inner experiences into coherent words – when AI bots just scrape everything? And someone out there is probably typing a prompt and getting responses in 0.001 seconds without giving a single thought about the human energy that is powering that response.

If I keep this up I'm likely to beat last year's step count total by a significant market. My week was a lot more chill than the previous week, though I have some lingering medical anxiety over some tests I had done. We had one more boardgames session before our friend flew out. ### On The Blog * Boardgames: Lord of the Rings Trick-Taking Game (Fellowship and Two Towers), Wyrmspan, Guards of Atlantis II, Inis, Modern Art ### Media Diet and Reviews #### Reading * Books: Still no new books started yet. * Comics: Mostly just reading Claremont-era _Uncanny X-Men_ , I am falling so far behind! * Feed reader backlog: Feed reader is at 508 unread items as of this writing, a small increase again. At this rate I'll need a "banruptcy" reset as some point. #### Watching * Ongoing: **ER** (Now halfway through the final season, I'm almost free!), **Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S4** , **Stewart Fails To Save The Universe** * Started: **Lanterns** on HBO Max. * Movies: No new movies this week. #### Gaming * Multiplayer games: * **Magic Arena** : Still faffing around and waiting for **Reality Fracture** * **Marvel Snap** : Finished playing the team clash mode, thinking about maybe uninstalling again. * Single-player games: * Ongoing: * **Graveyard Keeper** (Steam): Resumed this one. It's not as compelling as Stardew Valley and still kind of weird and I'm not sure how far I'll go with it. * **Super Mario Galaxy 2** (Nintendo Switch): Pretty fun, though the motion controls are still annoying. ### Word Power This might be the last one of these for a while, as I've stopped doing the regular NYT games for a few days now. * BILTONG: A form of air-dried, cured meat which originated in Southern Africa * CINQUAIN: A five-line stanza. * EPODE: A type of lyric poem. * GOBY: A type of spiny-finned fish. * HIATAL: Relating to a hiatus. * PINNIPED: A type of carnivorous aquatic mammal. * WEEPIE: A work, especially a film or play, that is excessively sentimental. ### Links of Interest Nothing shared this past week. ### Looking Forward Getting some lab results tomorrow which hopefully are good then a followup consult and after that hopefully no real medical stuff for a few months at least. TOC * My Week * On The Blog * Media Diet and Reviews * Reading * Watching * Gaming * Word Power * Links of Interest * Looking Forward This entry coming in on a Monday because Sunday was busy. ### My Week Google Fit says I walked 74,807 steps from last Sunday to yesterday, another 70k week! A lot of this week's walking were around either amall or a hospital. Another busy week for me, mostly because of friend meetups and also some regular doctor consults followed by a bunch of labs done. The labs are to check on some minor symptom that has been an unresolved mystery for more than a year now; hopefully it's nothing serious. Recently I ended up cancelling a credit card I've had for more than a decade now, because they refused to give me no annual fee for life and I'm tired of contacting support every year to have the annual fee reversed. I have two other credit cards that don't charge me an annual fee, so I'm fine with losing this one, though I must admit I was a bit saddened that my many years of being a good customer amounted to nothing. Sigh. I'm so tired. ### On The Blog * Nothing extra this week. ### Media Diet and Reviews #### Reading * Books: Still no new books started yet. * Comics: Still reading a lot of Claremont-era _Uncanny X-Men_ , and _Punisher War Zone_ , but still falling behind on current comics. * Feed reader backlog: Feed reader is at 486 unread items as of this writing, a small increase, despite my efforts. #### Watching * Ongoing: **ER** (Now in S14, two more to go!), **Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S4** , **Stewart Fails To Save The Universe** * Movies: No new movies this week. #### Gaming * Multiplayer games: * **Magic Arena** : Still faffing around and waiting for **Reality Fracture** * **Marvel Snap** : Still not doing ranked, but I kept the game around after Draft went away, mostly to claim daily freebies. Then they introduced a new limited mode a few days ago so I'm giving that a try. * Single-player games: * Ongoing: (Steam) * **Stardew Valley** : Still playing a lot of this, but toned down enough that I was able to play a couple of other things too. * Finished: * **Shadow of the Tomb Raider** : Yeap, I finally managed to sit down and power through and finish the main story of this game. Now I need to think about whether I still want to do stuff like complete the collectibles etc. * Started: * **Super Mario Galaxy 2** (Nintendo Switch): On a whim I bought this digital off the eShop (I didn't want the physical 2-pack with Galaxy 1 since I already have that game). I had forgotten how challenging the pointer controls are in these ports! * Boardgames: * We've been playing a number of boardgames during our meetups while our friend is in town; I'll do a writeup after it's all done. ### Word Power My NYT games sub is up for renewal and I am thinking of letting it expire, but I think that means losing access to Spelling Bee? Which might be fine I guess. We'll see how it goes. * DIOXIN: A type of pollutant that is a by-product of burning or industrial processes. * INURN: To bury or entomb. * PARTITA: An instrumental piece composed of a series of variations, as a suite. * RILL: A small brook. * TAXON: A taxonomic group. * TAMARI: Soy sauce made without wheat. * TIPI: Alternate spelling of TEPEE. * TIPPET: A covering for the shoulders, as of fur, with long ends that hang in front. ### Links of Interest Kind of been neglecting the link blog the past month or so, but I managed to get back into it this week. * links 🔗 Why Is Everyone In Tech So Sad? > A lot of people seem to be realizing that knowledge work is mostly pointless. If you are a human curious about the mentioned "This is Metro Manila" post, it is from 2019, feel free to read it: roytang.net/2019/10/this-is-metro-m… #philippines

This is Metro Manila
_(Note: This post discusses the traffic situation in Metro Manila. I’ve had this post in the works for a while, and it kept getting longer and longer (possibly my longest post to date). I also had my friendDavid review it first to make sure I wasn’t saying anything too ridiculous, and he and I discussed some of the things and some of his points made it into the final post.)_ I’ve basically lived all my 40-odd years in Metro Manila (barring maybe at most half a year total spent outside the Metro). I started commuting around when I was 10-11 years old, so that’s around 1989ish. Jeepney fare then was I think P1.50? Maybe that was the student fare. I remember it took two rides to get to my elementary school so I needed P6 for a round trip. The minimum fare these days is P9, so the increase has been 600% in 30 years. Probably still a bit too low, as jeepney drivers are still quite poor. During GS, HS and college I rarely ventured too far from home (schools were always nearby) and mostly stuck to Quezon City. I only got to go to the other Metro cities when someone else was driving me there for some reason. I do remember one time I had to take a late night bus ride home from Paranaque during HS, it was my first time commuting in a fully-packed standing-room only bus. For the most part, I didn’t care too much about traffic growing up. I still remember when the MRT3 opened up (Wikipedia says this was in ‘99), I took a ride during the first week just to go to Robinson’s Galleria, I think, for no reason. I was amazed because the train made it so much easier to go to Ortigas which before that had seemed very far (even back then the buses were always full). I remember thinking back then that the MRT3 had effectively reduced the space between cities. In 2003, I got a job in Ortigas in Pasig, around 13-14km from home. Not too far, and the commute route was a reasonable 45-60 minutes most days (and 30 mins on really good days). I took the MRT most of the time to Ortigas, as I still have some notes from around that time telling me it was a 1500-step walk from the MRT station to my office. North Avenue station was the first station on the North side, so although there was often a queue, it was reasonable and it wasn’t too hard to get on a train. On the way home from Ortigas, I’d prefer the bus. Since Ortigas was in the middle of the route, the MRT would be quite full by the time it got to Ortigas station, so the bus was easier and I’d often get to sit. Tracking my social media, I can tell I started complaining about the MRT and traffic around 2010 onwards. Most probably the build-up to the problem started a few years before that, in the later half of GMA’s term. Traffic and commuting and the MRT had gotten constantly worse since then. By the time I left the Ortigas job in late 2015, I had to allocate somewhere around 2-3 hours for travel time, and even then I’d still occasionally be late. Even today, Google Maps tells me driving that distance at around 10am would take around 3 hours. MRT lines famously grew to be sometimes a kilometer long during rush hour at North Avenue. This was the line to get into the station! By this time I usually preferred taking an FX to ortigas, but that queue usually took at the minimum 30 mins to 1 hr, possibly longer. By this time I had also started taking taxis and ubers where possible (I had the privilege of being able to afford more expensive rides), but even this was quite difficult.. Coincidentally (or not), the traffic troubles coincide with the continuous years of economic growth since the time of GMA. Then-President Noynoy Aquino famously pointed out this correlation, a bit of a tone deaf remark politically (in response to the complaints about traffic), but he was not incorrect. The big problem with the improved economy is that like elsewhere in the world, the gains are not evenly distributed, most of the economic gains went to big metropolitan areas like Metro Manila, which means people are still incentivized to work and move here. This would not in and of itself have been a problem if the government managed Metro Manila well and scaled up infrastructure as needed to anticipate the economic growth. It’s not just the current admin or the previous admin or the local governments that’s dropped the ball, it’s basically everyone in the national and local governments since the 80s. This catastrophic traffic was predicted at least 40 years ago yet not much has been done. It’s obvious that Metro Manila is overflowing and congested, even our water and power infrastructure is being pushed to the limit in the past year. **Intermission** : Signs you might be living in Metro Manila: * Wearing your backpack in front to avoid theft * Not leaving your wallet and cellphone in your pockets while commuting to avoid pickpockets * Waiting at least one hour in the queue for an FX or Jeep or a taxi * Waking up at 5am or earlier to get to your 9pm job and just recovering some sleep in the FX or bus * Cramming yourselves into the MRT or bus like a can of sardines * Haggling with your taxi driver because your destination is “too far” or “there’s too much traffic” * Going to wait for the bus at the no loading/unloading zone like everyone else because if you waited at the actual loading zone you’d never get anywhere * Walking a kilometer upstream of where you’re going to get a better chance of actually getting on a bus * Allocating an extra hour or two to your travel time to important meetings to allot for the occasional MRT breakdown * Not enjoying December even though it’s holiday season because you know the traffic is going to be horrendous * Hanging around some extra hours at the office or at the mall rather than exhausting yourself trying to get a ride during rush hour * Actually walking at least 5km to get to work when all else has failed **Solutions** : Before the "dami mong angal, ano solusyon mo?" crowd get into this, I'll go ahead and make some suggestions. I’m not a city planning expert or anything, just a layperson giving some suggestions that I think are reasonable and/or common sense, and probably better than coming up with inane ideas like “coding by car brand” or suggesting that people just wake up earlier to get to their destinations or denying that we have a mass transportation crisis. The solutions I suggest here are not intended to be a “be-all, end-all”, but perhaps can be the starting point of discussions. And, I know that given the implementation track record of our government this may be difficult, but spitballing solutions to these problems also requires perhaps not a little bit of optimism. **Short-term solutions** : It’s sad to say this, but I don’t believe there are any viable short-term solutions. None that can cause widespread relief from the traffic problems anyway. Most of the systemic solutions will be on a timeline of 5 years or more, and will definitely cost serious money. **On a personal level** , the best thing any individual could do would be to adapt his own situation as much as possible. If your commute is in the order of 2-3 hours or more per direction, I would strongly suggest looking for a better arrangement, either look for a job closer to home, rent a place closer to your work, or ask for WFH privileges. I realize that not everyone can afford these changes, but sometimes you’ll be surprised at what you can afford. I find that people are often quite bad at evaluating tradeoffs in time vs money, with a general preference towards money. For example if you’re working in an industry like mine (software development) where the salaries are generally higher than the average in the Metro, there’s a good chance you can afford to pay a bit more for rent or accept a lower salary if it brings you closer to home. But many people will refuse that tradeoff because for them money is the most important thing. Never mind that you’re wasting 5-6 hours daily in traffic. If money were really that important to you, consider spending it to save maybe 3-4 hours of travel time and use the extra time to freelance online and earn more money. Being stuck in traffic doesn’t earn you more money, it takes away your time and your energy and your mental health. **Emergency powers** : I actually don’t mind giving the government emergency powers to the government to help speed up procurement timelines and such, but senator Grace Poe has a point when she says the DoTr has to at least provide a specific plan/outline as to how they are going to use those emergency powers, instead of just granting them a blank check. **Move jobs and labor out of Metro Manila**. Or at least out of the major business districts (Makati, Ortigas, Taguig). Of course, the government can’t force businesses to move to less congested areas or outside the Metro altogether, but perhaps the economics can be made to favor moving out. The problem with this is that labor and capital are caught in kind of a loop: capital wants to establish offices where the labor market is so they prefer the business districts and are willing to pay higher salaries there; labor wants to work where the salaries are high and there are many options so they prefer those areas too. One common suggestion I see (on reddit, etc) is to **increase the minimum wage in the provinces to reduce the flow of labor to Metro Manila**. This is a reasonable first step, although it affects mainly the lower-skilled workers. For example, if a construction worker could be paid the same rate in his home province as in MM, he would be less inclined to go to MM. For higher-skilled work this can be a challenge, since it requires that those companies move or establish offices in the provinces, and increasing salaries run counter to that. It might be also good to incentivize (provide tax breaks or benefits) things like: * Companies that provide work from home days for their workers * Companies that provide shifting or flexible hours to avoid rush hour * Companies that establish in less populated regions (PEZA incentives, but more widespread) * Companies that provide relocation assistance for new hires in less populated regions (so they live closer to work) * Affordable housing in major business areas But the problem with incentives like these is that not only are they revenue-negative, they also add to the administrative burden, i.e. more work is involved to make sure the incentives are going to the right companies. I think it would probably be a simpler approach to **just disincentivize (i.e. tax) companies that have offices in major business areas** , to discourage further congestion in those areas. The additional tax rate can be made to scale according to the number of employees the company has, so as not to penalize smaller businesses, and the more you contribute to congestion, the more you pay. This has the added benefit of raising money for the needed infrastructure improvements elsewhere. It should be a national government imposed tax (so the cities can’t muddle with it), though the local governments can be asked to help in collections to simplify effort. **Move government offices out of Metro Manila.** While we can’t force companies to move out of Metro Manila, there is one big employer that we can just order to, and that’s government. As an example, just near where I live, there’s the Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform, Bureau of Jail Management and Prisons, National Housing Authority, etc. There’s no reason these offices have to be in Metro Manila; heck for the DA and DAR it’s probably better to have their main offices closer to the farmlands. There’s also camps like Camp Crame and Camp Aguinaldo. I can see an argument for having the civilian police headquarters in the metro (but probably not smack-dab in the middle of EDSA), but why the military headquarters? Many of these government facilities aren’t in the more congested business districts, but the more we can reduce the overall population of Metro Manila, the better. And moving them to the provinces has the benefit of adding jobs to those areas too. **Infrastructure:** Obviously MM needs a lot more of everything: more trains, more train lines, bridges across Pasig River, etc. The focus should be on improving mass transportation options instead of more roads or routes, since those just incentivize people to drive more. We as a country are hopefully on a path to continue economic growth, so our infra needs to be better able to scale up with that growth, and that means mass transportation. This is already a well-known thing, I’m not saying anything new here, the bigger problem is that the governments take forever to implement. **Subway:** I am cautiously optimistic about the planned subway from Quezon City to Taguig. David is worried that it will likely be flooded a lot of the time, and that’s much more costly than just an equivalent above-ground rail line. I think the major difference is that the above-ground rail line would have more right of way issues so it may take longer to complete. **Bikes:** It would be a big change culturally, but if we really want the city to be able to support larger populations, we have to promote usage of bikes. That means developing bike lanes and bike-friendly roads bike-friendly parking and having companies provide work lockers so people can change and not be smelly after biking to work. Having a bike culture would be a much more efficient use of road space and also improve the health of the population in general and be very eco-friendly. Much better than our current trend of more and more motorcycles. **Mass transportation:** we need more, not less. As a lifelong commuter I cringe whenever I find private car owners complaining that PUVs are causing all of the traffic and there should be fewer of them on the street. Try commuting during the rush hours when it’s difficult to get a ride and see if you still have that sentiment. It’s true that PUV drivers need a lot more discipline, but the solution there is to revamp the business model of those services to avoid having the drivers behave that way. The boundary system has to be the single biggest cause of PUV traffic problems. **Jeepney (and Bus) Modernization:** I support the goals of jeepney modernization, though in general I think the government is going about it the wrong way. Back when we lived at our grandmother’s house, our next-door neighbor was a jeepney driver. I like to think that he owned his vehicle (it was always parked at their house), but for all I know he was paying a daily boundary somehow. He ran the Project 2-3 route along Kamias/Anonas, and sometimes he’d recognize us kids when we get a ride on his jeep, and he’d refuse to accept our fare. There is a romanticized notion of the jeepney driver as the serial pull-up-by-your-bootstraps informal entrepreneur, symbolic of Filipino genius and creative expression with all their decorations, and I think such a thing would be fine in smaller municipalities. For a large, densely crowded beast like Metro Manila, it’s simply not an approach that scales, and it’s time to move on. **Public transport is a public good**. I believe transport routes should be treated similar to services like water or power. A single service provider, chosen through a competitive bidding process, would serve each area or route/set of routes. If you’ve tried any of the good public transportation systems in other cities like Singapore or Hong Kong, you know this is how it works. Public transport routes are a centralized service, not run by individuals cowboys jostling with each other for riders. I wouldn’t propose to immediately replace existing jeepney and bus operators with such service providers. It’s ridiculous to think such a transition could be done in a one-time, big-time manner. I would choose a few pilot routes/areas where we can introduce the new service providers. They can initially be competing alongside the existing PUVs. The service providers could propose the initial fare rate themselves as part of their bids. One of the criteria for the competitive bidding process would be that the rates must be reasonable. Competition with the existing routes would also hopefully keep the rates in line. Rate increases would be subject to approval by a regulatory commission. In theory, each route/area being monopolized by a single service provider means each driver no longer needs to compete with other drivers on the next route. But we’ll need strict SLAs in place to make sure the service is being provided as expected. The franchise grant should impose certain requirements such as: * Euro-4 compliant engines * fixed salaries, benefits and no commissions for drivers * Prioritize existing drivers of the same jeepney routes when hiring * observance of fixed stops. * Minimum of X vehicles in the field during lean hours and minimum of Y hours during rush hours (as defined by government - need to conduct studies on the optimum numbers for each route). * Penalties for traffic violations by their drivers (with some leeway) * And so on Other factors such as: * what kind of vehicles to use (maybe subject to branding guidelines and maintenance standards) * how much to pay the drivers can be left up to the service providers, for them to balance vis-a-vis their proposed rate. I would however prefer we get higher capacity vehicles than just the 20-22 passengers that jeepneys today can support. I'm thinking something like the public buses/shuttles used in Hong Kong or Singapore. I believe they are smaller than the city buses we have on EDSA, so they can navigate our narrower streets. Maybe prescribe a minimum passenger capacity for vehicles? Actually I would assume the economics are in favor of more capacity (since it means each trip can earn more money), so it might happen naturally. Of course not all routes would be able to support such buses, so maybe only where it makes sense. With this scheme, we may end up with transport fares slightly higher than what we have now. Probably closer to FX rates really. And honestly, it’s a bit anti-poor, but I think it’s something we have to live with. One of the big reasons the jeepney modernization plan is hard to pull off is because the current fares mean that drivers earn very little for a day’s work. At least this way the market determines the initial rates and the drivers don’t have to live in abject poverty. As mentioned, we pilot the program on a few routes, and then we can observe the first few routes for a maybe 3-6 months. Are there enough vehicles servicing the route? Are drivers earning enough money? Has traffic worsened? Then adjust the parameters for the next set of routes. We should aim to strike a balance between low fares and reasonable income for the drivers and service providers. One of the goals should be to make it attractive for existing drivers to switch over to working for the service providers. And also slowly wean people away from using jeeps. Same process could be applied to buses too. Franchise grants can be relatively short so that non performing suppliers can be replaced easily. Once the public gets used to the new service, we can phase out the old jeepneys on a per route basis. (Not all the old jeepney drivers will want to work for the service providers, alternative livelihood assistance may be needed for them) **Premium transportation options:** Senator Grace Poe (her again?) was derided recently for a suggestion to have “business class trains” in the MRT to encourage the upper class to take public transportation. Trying to do this in the MRT now is ridiculously impractical (which is why she was derided for the suggestion). However, I do agree that having premium transportation options available to the more affluent might be a good idea. It can still help to reduce the number of cars on the road. I’m especially fond of the P2P buses that were introduced to the Metro a few years back. They’re a lot more expensive than regular buses, but they’re comfortable and as long as it’s not rush hour, there’s not much of a queue. I often take a P2P bus where available. Maybe more routes are in order? Perhaps along the hopefully soon-to-be-finished North-South skyway? **Port congestion is also an issue** that contributes to the traffic as well. A lot of trucks are needed to carry the cargo offloaded in the port of Manila to the provinces. I would suggest developing other ports North and South of Metro Manila and diverting as much of the port traffic there as possible. I know we already have some existing nearby ports such as the port of Batangas, but AFAIK there’s still a lot of cargo traffic from outside Metro Manila passing through the port of Manila. The goal should be to minimize that. David also suggests developing freight rail lines from the port of Manila to provincial hubs. Freight rail can fast track cargo shipments instead of relying on trucks which add to traffic. **Optional:** Another issue with Metro Manila is that it’s composed of different fiefdoms, er, cities. Each of them have their own jurisdictions and traffic rules and so on. This is unnecessary and contributes to the chaos. I would suggest **having a centralized authority managing transportation issues** in MM. Something like how Transport for London manages transportation in the greater London area. This body would be responsible for things like: * managing service providers, rates, traffic rules * enforcement * conducting studies * proposing solutions * and so on. The traffic management duties of the MMDA can be absorbed by this new body. This requires taking away some autonomy from the local governments, so it requires legislation. The stark reality is that no matter the denials, we are in the middle of mass transportation crisis in Metro Manila and will probably remain that way for the foreseeable future. We may get some short-term relief from some projects that may finish in the next couple of years (North-South Skyway, etc). But in the long term there is much, much more that we need to do to turn Metro Manila into a sustainable megacity. The idealist in me still hopes we can get our act together and somehow get there. Like I said, a reasonable amount of optimism is needed. We shall see, shan’t we?

TOC * My Week * On The Blog * Media Diet and Reviews * Reading * Watching * Gaming * Word Power * Links of Interest * Looking Forward This entry coming in on a Monday because Sunday was busy. ### My Week Google Fit says I walked 70,320 steps from last Sunday to yesterday, another 70k week! The days were either very rainy or very hot. It was a busy week for me. Spent a couple days meeting up with friends to play boardgames because our overseas team member is back in town. Also had some labs done so I can do some doctor consults this week. I like hanging out with the friends but spending so much time outside the house feels like a preview of how much less free time I'd have if I somehow manage to get back to full-time work again. Less time for my side projects, less energy overall etc. At least I still managed to get my steps in! ### On The Blog * Looking for iPad Reader App Recommendations ### Media Diet and Reviews #### Reading * Books: Still no new books started yet. I also got lent a couple of murderbot books * Comics: Still reading a lot of Claremont-era _Uncanny X-Men_ , and _Punisher War Zone_ , but falling behind on current comics again. * Feed reader backlog: Feed reader is at 450 unread items as of this writing, quite a bit more than last time, have to get this under control again. #### Watching * Ongoing: **ER** (in the middle of S13!), **Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S4** * Started: **Stewart Fails To Save The Universe** * Movies: No new movies this week. #### Gaming * Multiplayer games: * **Magic Arena** : Still faffing around and waiting for **Reality Fracture** * **Marvel Snap** : Draft mode is finished! I got some stats, I should post them somewhere. * Ongoing: (Steam) * **Stardew Valley** : Together with Civ7, this used up most of my time this week! It remains very engrossing. * Demos: * **Sid Meier's Civilization** 's free trial week has finished! I had just enough time to finish a single run. My opinion of the game has improved a little bit because of the trial, but the price still feels ridiculous (especially considering the DLCs) so still not yet buying it for now. ### Word Power Kind of having trouble keeping up with the NYT Spelling Bee recently, but I still logged a few words to note: * FILLIP: A snap or light blow made by pressing a fingertip against the thumb and suddenly releasing it. * KENTE: A brightly patterned, handwoven ceremonial cloth of the Ashanti. * LINNET: A small finch. * LITTLENECK: A young quahog clam. * LOBLOLLY: A mudhole; a mire. * MANAKIN: A kind of numerous small bright-colored birds of Central and South America . * MANIKIN: A mannequin. ### Links of Interest Nothing shared this week still. Maybe next week! ### Looking Forward It will probably be a busy week again for me, meeting up with friends and visiting doctors etc.

Looking for iPad Reader App Recommendations
I was originally going to post this on r/ipad, but when I tried to submit my post I got a warning that I might be violating this rule: > Any request for purchase related advice/questions, product comparaisons, what product for a specific use case, and shipping discussions, will go to the "What Should I Buy" thread, also located at the top of the subreddit. And I didn't want to post in a thread because those are much less useful. I was about to search for a different subreddit to submit to, but I was like, you know what, I have a blog, I'll post there first and see what happens, I'm not in a hurry. (I guess I also wouldn't mind recommendations on where else I can post this question.) * * * Anyway, I'm looking for app recommendations for reading ebooks on my iPad. I have a large collection of ebooks (mostly epubs and PDFs) on my desktop PC (not a Mac) that I can access on my home network via a webserver. I would like to be able to access them via a ereader app that can open the site and download ebook files directly (instead of having to use the iPad's browser). As an example, for CBR and CBZ files I currently use the Chunky reader app (an app I also heard about from Reddit many years ago!). This app has an in-app web browser that lets me queue up multiple downloads at a time and then they are available locally in the app for me to choose what to read. I would like similar functionality for my ereader app. I was previously using the Kindle app, but this one is a bit annoying because I have to download the files separately and send to the app and I think that goes through Amazon's servers first or something before being downloaded back to the Kindle app. This is ok for downloading and reading a book at a time, one of my use cases is I also want to be able to browse entire runs of old magazines (mostly from the internet archive) and I would like to download all the issues and just go through them at will. Features I don't care for and in fact would rather not have: * social features * any kind of cloud sync * any sort of book store * anything that requires an account really Of course the reading experience itself should be decent. I would not say no to the ability to highlight segments in an ebook and export them later (the Kindle app has this). Apps that I have already tried and discarded: * Apple Books * ReadEra * Pocketbook If it matters, my iPads are a bit old (I have both a 6th gen and a 7th gen one), so anything too demanding performance wise is probably not a good idea. I will continue to try other apps, but I was hoping the internet might have some good suggestions.

TOC * My Week * On The Blog * Media Diet and Reviews * Reading * Watching * Gaming * Word Power * Links of Interest * Looking Forward It is September! Officially Christmas season over here. ### My Week I spent most of the week at home. It was kinda lazy actually. Some very rainy days and some less rainy days. Google Fit says I walked 70,480 steps from last Sunday to yesterday, so we are back to it. I always take a small foldable umbrella when I go out walking. A family friend bought my dad a Landers membership and he ended up bringing home a whole bunch of snacks which feels super unhealthy and bad for my weight control (I ate a lot this week). I found a stack of old writeable DVDs and CDs in one of my drawers and spent some time trying to burn some backups to them. It would have been nice since buying a new external hard drive for additional backups is quite expensive right now. However, almost all the discs appear to have succumbed to bit rot. Each attempt took a while. I was able to burn exactly one disc, and it was a CD-R, so only 600+ MB worth of backups. Tossing out these discs, but I'm kind of tempted to buy a few from Lazada just to make sure my external drive is actually capable of burning DVDs! ### On The Blog * The "every two months" movies and TV reviews post: Movies / TV - July & August 2026 ### Media Diet and Reviews #### Reading * Books: Still no new books started yet. I mostly just stare at my large collection of ebooks but not end up reading anything. * Comics: Still reading a lot of Claremont-era _Uncanny X-Men_ , and also started reading _Punisher War Zone_ , the last of the 90s era Punisher series I'm trying to get through. * Feed reader backlog: Feed reader is at 389 unread items as of this writing, a bit more than last time. #### Watching * Ongoing: **ER** (in the middle of S12!), **Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S4** * Movies: No new movies this week. #### Gaming * Multiplayer games: * **Magic Arena** : Faffing around and waiting for **Reality Fracture** * I recently revisited **Marvel Snap** and have been playing their limited-time draft mode. It's certainly a better experience than ladder grinding. * Single-player games I played this week: * Ongoing: (Steam) * **Stardew Valley** : Loading up my old SV save may have been a mistake as it continues to be very engrossing and kinda derailed and took over most of my gaming time this week. I never wrote a proper review of this when I put it down in 2017, so maybe I will do so if I manage to do all of this new endgame stuff. * **Shadow of the Tomb Raider** : A little bit of progress. * **King's Bounty: The Legend** , **Pathfinder: Kingmaker** : Almost no progress this week. * Demos / Announcements: * **Final Fantasy Resonance** got a demo on Steam! I have installed it on the Steam Deck but not yet started it. * **Sid Meier's Civilization** is celebrating the franchise's 35th anniversary with a free-to-play week for Civ7! I took advantage and have started a game but it has largely felt a bit meh and uncompelling so far. My one game is still in the first age. New expansion and free fourth age update have also been announced, but I'm not feeling confident about the game at all. ### Word Power Kind of having trouble keeping up with the NYT Spelling Bee recently, but I still logged a few words to note: * AMATORY: relating to romantic love. * ARROWROOT: a tuber native to Indonesia. * DHOTI: a traditional Indian bottomwear. * TOMMYROT: nonsense. * TYRO: a beginner. ### Links of Interest Nothing shared this week sadly. ### Looking Forward Might be a busy week; an old-time friend is flying and the old gang might be hanging out a few times for boardgames and whatnot.
