#knitting #showmeyourknits It's socks! Had a reunion with college friends in late October. They were fascinated by the self-striping sock I was knitting, so since then, it's been socks for all of them. Customized fit for each, because feet are weird and no one is standard. (Latest pair not shown)

Some languages use the same word for creating all manner of fabrics, whether woven, knitted, or crocheted. Many (most?) languages don't have a different word for "purl," either. It's right stitch and left/wrong/upside down/backwards stitch.

A sock that fits is 10% smaller in circumference than your ball of foot/ankle, and modified for fit issues (like high arch). Durability has to do with knitting to a gauge that is 15-20% firmer than what is recommended on the ball band. (and includes some nylon). Regia has a 10-year guarantee.

I would do this *before* ripping out, so you can figure out what size you *should* be knitting, and any modifications you might want to make to the shaping.

If the pattern doesn't have a schematic (a line drawing that illustrates finished measurements), check for that information in text form. You can also make your own schematic by dividing the stitch counts by gauge and reading through for shaping and length to see if width changes, and where.

For this week's #showmeyourknits theme of yellow, I had to go back to July 2006 to find a sock I had knit for my mother (whose favorite color was yellow). I took this photo before I wove in the yarn tail at the toe. Pretty Petals sock pattern by Jeannie Townsend. Yarn is Koigu KPPPM #knitting 🧶
A sock clad foot enters the frame the the bottom. The sock is knit in a yellow and green variegated yarn. In the background are garden plants with spiky flowers that are a similar color to the sock yarn. There are mock cables centered down the front of the leg.

The stitch pattern is from The Wild Garden Sock collection (apparently, I enjoy combining sock patterns with sweater construction).

The short rows and decreases are done when you have the number required for your bicep circumference. I much prefer this method to Walker's short row method that's like the second half of a short row sock heel.

The set-in sleeves use a modification of Elizabeth Zimmermann's method from her book Knitting Without Tears (the Kangaroo Pouch sweater). Sts are picked up around the armhole based on st:row gauge ratio, and the cap is short-rowed with decreases like the heel turn of a heel flap.

The sweater is knit top down, with set-in sleeves. I designed it based on my measurements and knit the body using one of the methods for a top down set-in sleeve sweater in Barbara Walker's book Knitting From the Top.

Cardigan almost complete. Just need to knit the zipper facing and sew in the zipper. Will probably take an inch off of the neck to end with the right total length for the zipper I ordered. Yarn is from a lamb fleece I chose from @getbentzfarm.bsky.social farm last fall. #knitting 🧶
A cardigan without a front closure hangs from a mannequin. The yarn is from a black fleece (making the yarn an extremely dark, dark brown). There is a simple knit/purl texture pattern in the fabric where the purls form diagonals. Also a high ribbed neck.

#showmeyourknits #knitting This blanket was a baby gift for Max the dog trainer. Max recognized Herbie the first time we went to the dog park. He had prevented the dog rescue from euthanizing Herbie for aggression. Herbie wasn't aggressive, just misunderstood. They adored each other. 🧶
A blanket made from light and dark green lies on a hardwood floor. The blanket is knit with alternating sections of knit garter and purl garter for an interesting offset stripe design. On the dog sits a gorgeous black and white Shih Tzu, looking up at the camera.

What length do you use for a single sock with Magic Loop? Some use 32'', some use 40''. Add enough length for the circumference of the 2nd sock for 2aat, i.e. an additional 8''. If you use 32'' for 1 sock, you'd need 40'' for 2aat. If you use 40'' for 1 sock, you'd need 48'' for 2aat.

It goes faster, but there's less entertainment and far less purring.

It doesn't read like it was hallucinated. It reads like something a new designer (which he is not) would write, without knowing he should use a style sheet, and without recognizing how inconsistent he is with how he presents information. Plus, the photos are real.

Really irritated with a paid pattern from a designer who has been publishing since 2014 and has over 200 patterns in his Ravelry store. The design is lovely, but the pattern reads like a first draft from someone who has never written a pattern before.

The laborious/distasteful part was having all the sts for all the pieces on the needles at one time. I much prefer knitting smaller pieces!

No. It's top down, simultaneous set-in sleeve construction. Even if this was a pullover, the shoulders to the bottom of the neck would have been knit back and forth. I would have lost a lot of yarn in the re-doing if I had steeked it!

Finally finished my first handspun sweater (I dyed the gradient, too). I knit it a year ago, but the shoulders were too wide, so I reknit from shoulders to underarms, removed the bands and collar, cut it apart and grafted it together again (then reknit the bands and collar). #handspun #knitting 🧶
A woman is posed with one hand on hip in front of a bookcase full of knitting books. She is wearing a gray cardigan with a polo collar edged in dark teal yarn. The sweater has 2-row stripes of teal alternating with 5 rows of gray. The teal is in a gradient that shifts from darkest to lightest and back again several times from the shoulders to the bottom ribbing. There are five shades of the gradient. The button bands are edged with the dark teal at their base and at the cast off edge. There are 8 teal buttons down the front of the cardigan.

I'm a fiber volunteer at Gale Woods Farm. A few of their Finn ewes decided to have their babies now, instead of the predicted next week or two. I'm in love with the little peanut on the right. Two sets of twins, one set of triplets, and a set of quads so far! #handspinning #knitting #lambingseason 🧶
A white Finn ewe lays on a bed of straw in her nursery pen. Two buckets hang from the rails on the right and a bag of hay hangs from the rails on the left. In the rear of the pen are three lambs, lying under a warming lamp. The two on the left are white, and the one on the right is mostly black with a white head. That one is a little peanut - barely 3 pounds!

#showmeyourknits #knitting 🧶 Knits for babies! Over-the-knee stockings with built in Mary Jane shoes for my grandniece. From a vintage 1940s pattern
A pair of dark pink over-the-knee stockings lie on a gray background. The socks have short row shaping at the knee to create a natural bend, with k2p2 ribbing extending above the bend. The feet of the stockings are worked in garter stitch in a natural color to look like Mary Janes. A bit of the pink shows through between the toe and the little ankle straps which have black buttons. The stockings are modeled on a baby with chubby thighs, wearing a pair of pink bloomers under her knit dress.

#showmeyourknits Colorwork 🧶 I don't do much colorwork, because I prefer texture. When I do, it's often intarsia. The pattern is Harlequin, from Stitchcraft issue 184, April 1949. It was part of my long term project to knit a sweater from each decade from 1890s-1990s.
A woman stands in front of a bookcase full of knitting books. Only her torso can be seen. She is wearing a body-forming gray pullover with a close-fitting neck. The bottom, neck and 3/4-length sleeves are all hemmed. Down the front center are 7 large triangles pointing downward and divided into halves, with the left half a magenta color and the right half a golden yellow. The triangles are repeated down the arms. On the right arm the yellow half of the triangles can be seen and on the left arm, the purple half can be seen.

#showmeyourknits #knitting 🧶 Green! Christmas stocking I knit for my daughter's fiance. I've made these for my nieces and nephews, their spouses and kids. I used motifs I picked up from several stocking patterns as well as stitch dictionaries. Lined with wool felt to keep it from stretching.
A Christmas stocking hangs against a rosy beige stucco wall. The stocking is knit in three colors: off white, sage green, and forest green. The top of the stocking has a Latvian braid knit with the two greens, and the stocking is knit in horizontal bands of stranded color work, using two colors for each band, with the width of the bands varying. The largest motif is a Scandinavian snowflake with sage green background and off white snowflake. Other bands have tree motifs, small snowflakes, and zig zag lines. The band on the foot is in sage green with "Sam" in white letters, flanked with three hearts. THe heel and toe are forest green.

Knitters often knit for love: for love of the craft, and to express love for the recipient. We are rarely on the receiving end of knitted items (because we can knit for ourselves!)

I had the great pleasure of completing this shawl for @thelooseendsproject on behalf of a knitter whose health made it difficult to finish something this complex. The knitter turned out to be a neighbor who lived just two blocks from me! She is full of creativity, and her surroundings reflect that.

#showmeyourknits 🧶 I won this yarn (BT Quarry) at a retreat last year. Color was Pumice (light gray). I have so many gray sweaters, so I dyed it Berry Crush. I can be SEEN in this sweater. Woolen spun yarn weighs nothing. Pattern is Bellows and buttons are vintage coat buttons, all different. ❤️ it.
Bulky weight cardigan made from woolen spun yarn in a VERY bright shade of fuchsia/magenta. There are V shaped cables on either side, with a textured stitch pattern on the upper bodice that's maybe moss stitch (I can't remember.) There is a nice wide k2p2 button band and a fantastically deep shawl collar that sits nicely up the back of the neck. Four black vintage coat buttons close the front. Each button has a different textured surface.

Got this braid of 100% Falkland from @knittinglizard.bsky.social Sunday at Crafters Gotta Craft. I wondered if the OOAK in OOAK BLUE reflected the way Minnesotans say "oak," until a friend told me that it means "one of a kind." Ha! Started spinning it this afternoon, till tragedy struck.
A braid of unspun fiber in various shades of ocean blues and greens, with a label that says, "Ooak Blue"An e-spinner with some of the blue-green wool spun up on the bobbin sits next to a label that says Knitting Lizard Fibers and the broken drive band of the e-spinner.

#showmeyourknits Socks. These are my most recently completed socks, the first project I've knit that started with raw fleece and went through processing, spinning, design to finished project. The dark color makes it hard to see the spiraling design. #knitting 🧶
A pair of sock covered feet touch each other sole-to-sole. The mid-calf length socks are peacock blue and are knit in a k1p1 pattern with a spiraling p3 embossing the rib. The heel is worked with a "plain heel" which is an insta-thought peasant heel (rather than afterthought), modified to accommodate my high arches.

Thank god for @jrabb4.bsky.social's obsession (and instructions) for grafting, or I would be going insane trying to graft this sweater back together in pattern. I can now graft a st off the needle as a purl, while simultaneously turning the grafting thread into a knit. I feel like a magician.🧶 #knit
A dark green fingering weight sweater lies on a gray table. The knit/purl stitch patterns form damask fabric of zig zags and diamonds. The ribbing is in a darker green and made of mini cables. The bottom several inches of the sweater sits on one needle while the upper part of the sweater is on another needle. The fabric is partially grafted together, maintaining the knit/purl pattterning.
