Today I went on a Stanford sponsored grant writing retreat for junior faculty. Given the constant assault on academia, the mood was muted but at least we got beautiful views.

Remembering @atulbutte.bsky.social at #CHIL2025. The world lost an amazing light and mentor. He helped shape my career and the careers of many others in the medical informatics and medical AI space.

With the destruction of federal funding for research, people have been hoping foundations fill in some of the gaps. HHMI decided to suspend their competitions AFTER applicants had already spent hours working on the application.

A Stanford assistant professor and a Berkeley assistant professor walk into the #STATBreakthrough summit. There’s no punchline, just commiserating about the destruction of American science.

This makes me so upset. The reason everyone needs to get a Measles vaccine is to protect not only themselves but the vulnerable people in our community who are too young to get vaccinated or may have impaired immune systems.

Funny story, when I was a grad student, I liked to doodle. I made this doodle one day. Our lab ended up moving and I lost the doodle. One day I saw it displayed in our old office space. For over 10 years, that’s where it sat. Today, I took it back to put in the research lab I run.

What are people’s experiences with VuMedii? They keep asking me to make free videos for them, and I keep saying no. I already produce a lot of unpaid content with the American Academy of Dermatology. I’ve got free videos up on YouTube from talks I’ve given. Why should I do more for free?
An email chain where I say I won’t produce free content for a for profit company and they respond passive aggressively about me needing to simply educate other clinicians and evolve patient care.

Yesterday we got some real Disney magic due to this lovely lady right here. My six year old was dressed as Leia, her friend as Darth Vader (as Kylo Ren said to her, “your penchant for the dark side is reassuring”). The actress playing Rey spent a full 5 mins with our girls and gave them a mission.

After all this thinking, we are tired of sitting and ready to move. So of course we go hiking, which is fun but a little more strenuous than usual at 6000 feet. Lots of debate about how AI is being deployed.
