Following that you gotta account for attendee limits, venues can only fit so many people, so how to do you make it affordable for everyone and be able to run again next time? It's a balancing act that can make or break an event. Especially if people think that organisers are trying to profit.

110

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 21/01/2025

Some basic venues could be as much as $200 an hour, yet alone a whole day. You could be looking at $1000 Aud to start even planning a single day event and need to be sustainable. Quick napkin math. You need 100 people at $10 to show up just the venue alone. Making that $20 halves that.

110

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 21/01/2025

What most people are vaguely aware of but not explicitly is how absurdly expensive venue hire is. Keeping costs down for entry requires even more people to show up regularly to break even. Then, you have to account for pricing differences for NFP/FP orgs and individuals.

110

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 21/01/2025

By default, current events that i have gone to and to my understanding work under the following: Door/venue fee: pays toward venue hire fee. Anything extra pays for staffing/equipment hire, etc. Game fee: purely game prize pot.

IMO venue fee should be to cover the venue costs itself, and any game entry fees fuel the pot bonuses for the players (unless running to fundraise or something explicitly stated) But it is interesting that the players factor in full cost, whereas organisers have to be able to run on venue only.

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

Improved production is something I'd love to see and dedicate time to, but it's all entirely out of pocket, and then there's the factor that people have to know how to use the equipment (not hard, but more time.) What i would love to see is more orgs working together to collaborate and pool reources

010

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

I feel it depends on the venue and what you get out of it. It might feel terrible to pay $25 on paper might seem too much, but if the venue is real nice and convenient, I'd pay that for a bigger day with more happening.

110

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

More than likely an easier time yeah

000

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

Pixel no, as it's a bar, so naturally the venue is 18+, but for CCH it needs to be separated or facing away from the room at the very least.

100

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

A big reason is the games rating. If you have MK at an event, by default the event has to be 18+. The venues are also required to enforce this. If they didn't have the rating or have a gore-free setting, this simply wouldn't be an issue.

200

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

Asking people to turn it down is easy enough, but venue acoustics play a huge part since the sound carries.

100

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 19/01/2025

Ahhh yep yep, don't worry i struggle with this one too, but also a culprit since I wanna hear my game.

000

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 19/01/2025

I actually didn't even know that was happening! Little gatherings like this are awesome as it shows people are eager to put in the time to organise and plan.

200

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 19/01/2025

Ranbats is a tricky one, the price is hard to justify for people but the price is more important than ever since they need to make up the venue cost. Changing venue also makes things difficult, because the cost would only go up for everyone.

000

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 19/01/2025

Genuine question for the AU FGC. What do you enjoy most about locals? When does an event become "to expensive" to go to? How much are you comfortable to pay for a venue to play games with people? What would you like to see improved in current events?

The convenience of using a console for tournaments is progressively getting worse due to the licencing of the controllers. Even with emulated firmware and converters it's still hit and miss whether it'll work half the time.

100

RowdyHowdy @rowdyhowdy.bsky.social · 28/10/2024

I still find it baffling that controller compatibility is even worse now with all the tools available to us, than what it was in the early 2010's. My first stick was a Qnaba Q4 and it just worked on everything at the time.
