i made this html+css template as an alternative to linktree for people who want to ditch it. you can host it for free on neocities! and it's yours forever :) if for any reason neocities falls in the future, you can easily grab the files and host them somewhere else.

artist friends who've drawn comics: what's your process? I've got an idea I can see really clearly in my head (although I know sweet FA about panelling etc) - do you tend to draw each panel as a separate piece, or organise your panels first and draw into them, or like. how?

Share your knowledge if/when you can. Teaching other people how to do what you do doesn’t lessen your art - it just means more and better art for everyone. I appreciate when people are willing to tell me about their brushes, how they study, etc… I want to put that back out into the world.

if you're one person making a comic by yourself, don't treat yourself like you should function on the same level as comics that have multiple people working on them. your backgrounds can be squiggles and colors. allow yourself room to be abstract with details and give yourself some grace

My most strongly held comics opinion (I hesitate to say "opinion," because it's a fact): lettering should be the first finished thing done, not the last. Done after (or along with) roughs and finalized before pencils. Pencils and inking should be done AROUND the lettering.

Some BETTER LETTERER for you. And before the inevitable "that's not how I do it" replies, keep in mind that, by and large, this is how it's done in pro American comics (Marvel, DC, etc.) I've worked for all of them. More tips: blambot.com/pages/letter...

For anyone that uses Neocities, sharing this from the Fediverse. It looks like if you've got adult content on there, potentially discuss said content, or even just us it for your art gallery... You might want to download your full website and be ready to move just in case... Fuck censorship!
I want to protect NSFW artists (emphasis on "art"), but if it becomes legally dangerous to do that we won't be able to host that content anymore. I wish I had a better answer for you, I'm as bamboozled by how crazy everything is getting as everybody else is. If the US starts saying we need to check people's drivers licenses to look at an illustration of a furry or whatever we'll have to make changes to deal with that.

We've not always been okay with hosting NSFW content. We don't (have never) envisioned Neocities as a porn hosting platform, and regularly take down sites trying to do this.

I'm working on a new terms of service that will clarify more of this in the near future. In a lot of ways it actually increases what is allowed to be put on a neocities site and increases clarity, but I'll probably get screamed at for it either way. Not looking forward to it.

Been a year. Time to repost this.
YOUR PORTFOLIO CRIT
THINGS I'D TELL YOU IF I WERE LOOKING AT YOUR WORK IN PERSON
1 Violating the 180 degree rule makes this sequence hard to follow
2 A few more incidental overlaps will make this foreshortening clearer
3 Symmetrical compositions with a character dead center imply an important moment. Don't draw every panel like that?
4 This __ looks kind of fake. Take the time to look at reference instead of just making it up
5 An establishing shot will help the reader understand where this takes place.
6 Find a life-drawing session to attend, or practice from photos online.
7 Show these pages to someone who doesn't know the story and ask them to tell the story back to you.
8. Nudge this part over a bit to eliminate that tangency.
9 You flattened out the depth by rendering the foreground, middle ground, & background with the same values. Create depth and direct the eye by organizing them into overlapping planes of light & dark.
10 there are better ways to use your time than rendering every brick.
11 these characters look like they're floating (or falling). Draw figures and bg from the same eye level.
12 Unless this will be a wordless comic, leave more room for the lettering

okay this is HUGE??? (clip studio) For lineart specifically (monochrome stuff), if your layer is in "color" mode, liquify tool will most likely blur it during transformation... If you set it to "monochrome" first, IT STAYS CRISPY 🤯🤯🤯
example of a part of lineart being transformed with liquify tool in clip studio - in color and monochrome layers mode, to show that the monochrome version keeps the lines pixelated/unblurred

Composition devices in art can feel a little too simple to be true. Wdym I can just align these objects to form lines to lead to the focal point? Seems sus. But when I analyze my favorite artists' works for composition specifically, these little things are just absolutely everywhere. It's amazing.

The best #watercolor tip I ever learned was to paint with only 3 layers, max. Base gradients (lighting), detail gradients, fine details/shadows. This keeps color vibrant and teaches you a lot about layering! So, here’s the three layers that made up my recent study~ 🐠 #ArtTips #ArtTutorial #Art
A simple wash of two sections, representing what is eventually the water surface and the underwater canyon. The colors are a simple wash of purples, blues, and green-yellows. A layer painted on top of the prior image, detailing the shadows of the rocks under water as well as the surface ripples. The finished painting of an underwater canyon, glowing with yellow light from above and shadowed in purple, with the canyon disappearing in the distance into the deep blue sea.

Time for another reference dump! This zip file contains 2,566 photos (6.58 GB) from the Metropolitan Museum of Art arms and armor collection. I tried to focus on the types of details you don't see in most available reference, like hinges and fasteners. Enjoy! drive.google.com/file/d/1emF3...
A shot of an eggplant-shaped samurai helmet sitting on a wooden stand in a museum display case. It's made of darkened metal and has gold trim and accents.A closeup shot of some buttons, fasteners, and ties on a small section of a samurai armor set's front chest plate. There are various ornate patterns, complex knots, and overlapping pieces.A closeup shot of the thumb and forefinger of a European steel gauntlet inlaid with gold. It has bronze rivets and a white leather glove under the overlapping finger armor pieces.A closeup shot of an extremely ornate double barreled shotgun's firing mechanism and trigger. The hammers are shaped like squirrels holding nuts and there is floral filigree everywhere.
