The upper story of the central hall is lined by rectangular windows, allowing light to enter all three halls of the market. The entrance wall has windowed double doors for each hall, with tall single arch windows above the left and right hall doors. The central hall has a tall three-arch Palladian window on its top story, and a smaller Palladian window above its double door. Classical brick patterns outline the double doors, and add accent lines to the face of the entrance wall.

A dark gray painting resembling a chalkboard with many faint, rounded pastel chalk scribbles hangs on a neutral museum wall. To the right, a museum guide leans against the frame of an open doorway leading to a bright blue corridor lit by large sunny windows.

Cy Twombly
American, 1929-2011
Untitled, 1968
Oil and crayon on canvas

Here, white crayon applied on gray oil paint creates layers of scrawls reminiscent of chalk on a school chalkboard. These rhythmic scribbles suggest both the development of a narrative and a record of the artist's gestural performance.

Twombly's experience as a cryptologist in the U.S. Army prompted a fascination with drawing and calligraphy that is evident in Untitled and other works from his Blackboard series of paintings created between 1967 and 1971.

An older man in a black suit coat and gray trousers is seated on a folding stool with bright chrome legs and a black leather seat. He is turned to his left while looking to his right at a tall rectangular painting mounted vertically on the brightly lit gallery wall just in front of him. The painting has a deeply saturated red background with a subtly shaded white square shape in its upper half, above a less saturated red square below. An identical chrome and leather folding stool sits empty just to the left of his stool. The gallery’s wooden plank floor has a clean glossy finish, in which the reflection of the chrome legs of the empty stool are reflected.

Mark Rothko
American, b. Russia, 1903-1970

Untitled, 1954
Oil on canvas

If you are only moved by color relationships, then you miss the point. I'm interested in expressing the big emotions — tragedy, ecstasy, doom.
—Mark Rothko

Soft-edged rectangles glow and dissipate, hovering over this deeply saturated red canvas. Rothko explored variants of this composition for more than two decades, staining, blotting, and layering paint with delicate brushstrokes to build expanses of atmospheric color. Purely abstract, lacking hard lines, and with no identifiable narrative content, this work expresses the artist's profound concern with the spiritual, symbolic qualities of color.

@cogdog 🧵Extrapolated Future Archives Thanks! This is so great — and well designed. I’ve always wanted to navigate #scfi themes and connections like this. The only downside — no #ForbiddenPlanet (social media + god like power) #UX #informationarchitecture #scifi

Mapping real-world scenarios to the science fiction stories that explored them first

What is this site?
The Extrapolated Futures Archive is a reverse-lookup for speculative fiction. Describe a situation you are facing, and find the SF stories that already worked through the implications.

The catalog connects stories (novels, novellas, short stories, films) to the speculative ideas they explore: thought experiments about technology, governance, biology, society, and more. Every idea is tagged with domains, scenario types, and outcome types so you can filter by the kind of future you are thinking about.

How to use it:

Search by title, author, synopsis keywords, or idea descriptions

Filter by domain (AI, biotech, climate, space, governance...), scenario type, outcome, decade, or series

Browse ideas to find transferable thought experiments, then follow links to the stories that explore them

Browse stories to see what speculative ideas a particular work contains

Book Club discussions (marked with book icon) offer section-by-section roundtable analyses by AI personas modeled on SF authors

What-If Query (via the What-If Query page/link) lets you describe a real-world scenario in plain text and get ranked matching ideas

The archive is designed for decision-makers in government, industry, and NGOs who want to widen their thinking by surfacing fictional precedents for novel real-world challenges.

Color vertical photo of the Lower Yellowstone Falls, Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park, on a sunny mid July day. The narrow rapidly flowing river flows through a stone canyon with evergreen trees almost to the waterline. The river turns into a white water, solid stream dropping 300 foot to the lower canyon, just off the lower edge of the photo. Tiny figures of tourists stand on a small rocky point near the top of the falls. The tops of two evergreen trees appear at the bottom right of the photo, just below the location of the camera.

The apples are small to medium size with a yellow-light green skin with small scattered gray spots and a reddish blush. A printed sign behind the apples describes the GoldRush Apple Profile, Character, and Availability.

PROFILE
A medium to large-sized fruit, truly golden in color with a reddish blush. Excellent in flavor and for storage. A product of the Purdue, Rutgers, and Illinois (PRI) breeding program, the name comes from its golden color and rush of deliciousness when bit into. GoldRush has a complex parentage that includes several superior heirloom varieties (Mellrose, Winesap, Rome) and even Siberian crabapple!

CHARACTER
Sweet, tart, spicy, and aromatic. While an excellent fresh-eating apple. GoldRush makkes superior single-variety sauces and juices.

AVAILABILITY
Late October through late NovemberThree GoldRush apples from the PA Farm Show retail apple stand. The apples are relatively small, with yellow-green skin, a reddish blush, and small gray dots. I tasted one and liked the sweet, soft, slightly tart flavor which I found unique and very refreshing. Maybe the crabapple in the GoldRush family tree!

@mamund 🧵Social Software Affordances Explaining Twitter in 2009 was *much* more fun "It is a sense of place, not space, which makes it appropriate to dance at a Grateful Dead concert, but not at a Cambridge college high table; to be naked in the bedroom […] [Original post on federate.social]
Just as a good architect knows how the to use the affordances and relationships of physical spaces to help cue behavior, architects of social software should aim to use software affordances to make socializing in the neighborhood, workplace, and commons as natural as possible. I think this will require cues to signal and differentiate as well as connect places. The goal should be to help people read context and act comfortably in different places whose norms they can quickly learn, understand and trust. As Harrison and Dourish write:

"A conference hall and a theatre share many similar spatial features (such as lighting and orientation); and yet we rarely sing or dance when presenting conference papers, and to do so would be regarded as at least slightly odd (or would need to be explained). We wouldn't describe this behaviour as 'out of space'; but it would most certainly be 'out of place' and this feeling is so strong that we might try quite hard to interpret a song or a dance as part of a presentation, if faced with it suddenly. It is a sense of place, not space, which makes it appropriate to dance at a Grateful Dead concert, but not at a Cambridge college high table; to be naked in the bedroom, but not in the street; and to sit at our windows, peering out, rather than at other people's windows, peering in. Place, not space, frames appropriate behaviour." —Re-Place-ing Space: The Roles of Place and Space in Collaborative Systems.

When he was told that Apple had just bought a Cray to help design the next Mac, Seymour commented that he had just bought a Mac to design the next Cray.

#FotoVorschlag Tischkultur >> Table culture Oberlin Restaurant Street tables at night, June 2016 Grant’s Block location Providence RI USA #photography #rhodeisland #restaurant
Color night photo of people eating, drinking, and talking at small cafe tables outside the windows of the Oberlin restaurant at its original location. At 9pm in June, the sky is dark, but with a some reflected city glow. A red traffic light and bright 19th street lamps on the sidewalk ahead light a couple walking towards the restaurant. In the foreground, a couple sit at a table set with wine glasses and printed single page menus. One of them leans forward, using her cellphone to illuminate her menu, which reflects light back onto her pensive face.

#FotoVorschlag Sandige Angelegenheit >> Sandy Affair North Beach, 12 Aug 2014 Charleston RI USA #photography #rhodeisland #beach
Color photo of about twenty casually dressed older people standing on a broad flat beach, talking in small groups that are scattered from the shallow waves on the left, to the flat tide line on the right. Most of the people wear low, cloth shoes, colorful shorts or bathing suits, and shirts — many wear hats. The sun is beginning to set to the right, brightly highlighting the tops and edge of a wide, dense bank of gray-bottomed clouds that extends from the ocean to the beach. The cloud bank stretches from just beyond where the people are standing to about a third of the way down the beach, as the beach extends to the horizon.

Coincidence Engine One: Universal People’s Republic Time (2008) by [The User]. Color photo of an art installation with twelve hundred identical small white electric battery-powered alarm clocks with white faces, black dials and hands. The clocks are tightly stacked on more than 25 small, curved and narrow steps cut into a tall custom designed C-curved white stand which is much wider at its base than at the final step which forms its open top. Starting at floor level, each step is set back a small distance — about the same as the width of the each step — creating a curved wall of clocks sloping up and away from the viewer. The clocks are brilliantly lit from above, inviting a single viewer to step into the open side of the stand to feel surrounded by the many small clocks, watch the second hands move in near unison, and feel immersed in their nearly synchronized sound. [The User] is an art collective comprised of architect and installation artist [Thomas McIntosh](http://www.undefine.ca/en/artists/thomas-mcintosh/), and composer and sound artist Emmanuel Madan.

Color photo of a silver-haired woman taking a cell phone photo of a person riding a wooden horse on a carousel, as the person whirls into view from her left. An image of a person is clearly visible on woman’s cell phone screen. The top of the carousel is red with a large gold eagle and gold trim; below is a band of gold framed mirrors on a white background, each mirror surrounded by bright light bulbs. The people, horses, and a red, white, and blue sleigh on the carousel are blurred by their motion as the carousel spins to the right.

#FotoVorschlag 'Führende Linien' >> Leading lines East Bay Bike path Bristol RI USA #Photography #RhodeIsland #bikepath www.railstotrails.org/trailblog/rho…
Color photo — a very straight, smoothly paved bike path leads through sunlit trees and low, dense greenery into the far distance. A yellow-painted dashed line separates the path into two lanes. Thick white lines mark the left and right edges of the path, with closely trimmed grass from the edges of the path to greenery on either side. An unpainted two-rail rustic wooden fence bounds the greenery on the right, leading to a distant red octagonal Stop sign — which marks a small crossing path. ‘STOP’ is painted below ‘AHEAD’ in white on the path just ahead. Minuscule figures — perhaps cyclists — are barely visible on the path in the far distance. The 14.3 mile path follows the former Providence and Bristol Railroad railbed, opened as a paved bike path in 1992,

#FotoVorschlag: Telefon >> Telephone International Steampunk City 2011 Waltham MA USA, 8 May 2011 #photography #steampunkfashion
Color photo of an elaborate candlestick style steampunk telephone standing in front of its fitted and mirror lined mahogany case. A brass-bound, cylindrical mahogany cylinder rests on a gray metal pineapple shaped object, supported by a square gray metal base with four curved-foot legs. Brass pipes and valves lead from the top of the cylinder to a silvery metal spiral — shaped like a spiral of incense (often burned as a mosquito repellent). A thick cloth covered tube connects the brass plumbing to a bright metal fitting, which connects the tube to a larger cord-wrapped tube. A thin gray metal tube rises from the brass plumbing on the right of the spiral, supporting a brass steam whistle with a cylindrical body, whistle hole, and conical top.

#FotoVorschlag 'Farbtupfen' >> spots of colour Taquerio at night Mystic CT Cold margaritas, Hot tacos
Night color photo of Taquerio “a vintage gas station converted to a hip taco bar with open garage doors in the summer and plenty of outdoor dining.” A tall turquoise sign at the curb, and dramatically lit turquoise tile on front of the former station contrast with yellowish-orange lights (like sodium vapor) brightly illuminating the interior and the area under the tall freestanding roof sheltering what was originally the station’s gas pump island. The gas pumps have been removed, and replaced by a bar top that stretches between the two white pillars supporting the roof. Tall bar chairs neatly line either side of the bar. Five red bullet lamps hang above the bar, attached to a thin white rod running between the pillars. A large black star over a red stripe, back lit by turquoise light, is mounted near the front edge of the pump island roof. No people or cars are in the photo. It looks like art project dropped into a lot on 30 Broadway Ave, Mystic, CT. Impressive!

Color photo of the interior of a long, narrow wooden building, a 250 foot segment of 1000 foot 1824 ropewalk, used for spinning lengths of fiber into long ropes for sailing ships. Large wooden pillars about every ten feet divide the length of the room into two galleries. In the left gallery, strands of fiber are twisted to form rope by spinning them through a circular device. The right gallery is open for workers — and visitors to walk freely. Small figures of visitors are visible at the far end of the building. The ropewalk was moved to and restored at the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic CT USA.

@bosak It looks like they already have that document logged. It contains a copy of one of my favorite Doug Engelbart papers and diagrams! I think of an Engelbart style Journal as a space to record, cite, and link dialog, external references, and knowledge […] [Original post on federate.social]
A diagram of Doug Engelbarts CONccurrent Development, Integration, & Application of Knowledge process. (CODIAK). It shows three categories of information arranged in three vertical columns:

Dialog Records: memos, status reports, change requests, commentary, design reviews, etc.

External Intelligence: Articles, books, reports, papers, competition, supplier and customer info, new technologies, trip reports, etc.

Knowledge Products: Proposals, plans, budgets, legal contracts, design specs, Mfg plans, test plans and results, etc.

Arrows lead from Dialog Records to Knowledge Products and in the opposite direction, indicating how dialog leveraging external intelligence both supports creation of knowledge products and is a primary subject of a continuing stream of dialog.
