I wrote about taking my daughter to start university, and the ways tech is making her feel helpless rotational.co.uk/2026/09/next/
A view over London from her accommodation's window, with a hanging tag saying "WARNING""She said, “How did you get around when you first lived in London?” knowing that it was before anyone had phones. And I told her about the pocket A-Z map I, and every other London immigrant I knew, carried always.

She said, “I don’t know how to read maps,” in despair, because her maps plan her route for her.

She said, “I don’t know how to spell any more,” explaining how she stopped learning to spell after autocorrect began doing it for her.

She said, “My attention span is nothing.” I tried, lamely, to suggest she puts her phone in a different room when she needs to get on with something.

She said, “I hate it,” referring to the iPhone she carries always. Its constant distraction, its..."

Ridiculous game
A confusing screenshot of the game Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard, with a lot of big numbers, a dizzying array of pixel scales scales, many cards, and the words "Maximum Overkill" at the centre of it all.

Pretty into Wells Cathedral. Good gothic
Looking up the nave; the classy quadripartite vaulted ceiling was decorated in the 19th CenturyLooking down the choir and into the Lady Chapel at the end with medieval stained glass windowsWithout the St Andrew’s Cross arches, monumental and almost modern-looking but built in 1338, the central tower will fall down

I dig the ominous dome in Quatermass II (the 1955 British TV sci-fi serial)
A black and white film still in which a group of men walk down a road on a factory site towards an ominous featureless dome.A black and white film still with same composition of the first, in which a single man runs towards the camera, away from the ominous featureless dome.

Just reading up on my home town of Bath in the BBC Domesday Project
Text from an entry in the BBC Domesday project that says:

In Bath,we have punks and skinheads. Skinheads go around in gangs and they usually have no hair. They wear Union Jack T.shirts and Dr. Martins boots. They some times wear chains round their bleached jeans. Some skinheads have studs through their noses and ears. They usually go round town causing trouble. Some skinheads have studs through their noses and ears. They usually go round town causing trouble. Some skinheads are N.F.,i. e. National Front supporters. If there is a fight between punks and skinheads, the skinheads usually win.

Punks usually hang around in town. Most punks have different coloured hair and some take gas. They carry chains on their trousers and they wear leather jackets. Some punks have rings in their noses. Punks fight fight with skinheads but the skinheads usually win. Punks call the police the "fuzz".

This by @hitpoints.bsky.social is a great summation of the current calamitous state of the gaming media. (Hint: subscribe to his excellent work! And that of other independent journalists!) hitpoints.substack.com/p/235-machin...
Text which says: "If someone searches for advice on Cyberpunk 2077’s Dex vs Evelyn decision in 20 years, Google’s ML models will be able to provide it. But what about the games of the future? What are you going to train the machine-learning models of tomorrow on when you’ve put all the guides teams out of work, the websites they used to write for have gone out of business, and no new ones have stepped into the void because you’ve shown there’s not a penny to be made from producing content for Google’s robot army to steal? Where’s the fucking future in that?"

Here are my favourite Jurassic Park novel covers. (More here, with customarily excellent paeloanatomical commentary: chasmosaurs.com/2023/09/22/v...)
Dutch edition of the Jurassic Park novel, showing a bizarre rendition of a T. rex looking over its shoulder at two people fleeing down a stream. The more I look at it, the more confused I feel about it.Russian edition of the Jurassic Park novel. It shows a head of what is presumably meant to be a fierce T. rex looking intently at something, but with huge cheeks and big eyes, it's oddly cute.Hungarian edition of the Jurassic Park novel, and the site of murder by graphic design. It features the classic Jurassic Park movie font, but that's as close to that property that it manages to stray. In the top third, three T. rexes progress from 3D wireframe to solid form (symbol of technology!) and scowl over a forest canopy, part of which which is pixellated for some reason.German edition of the Jurassic Park novel. It has a photograph of a very bad model of, presumably, a T. Rex (always a T. rex) in the lower foreground, next to some text which talks about the movie as a blockbuster phenomenon. Author Michael Crichton doesn't get a look-in, apparently.
