New paper with Ningzhen Zhao and @owen1beck.bsky.social on metabolic cost after applying-then-removing FES. Getting a model to reduce its metabolic cost is easy (if it's not already minimized) but I think this is the first unassisted gait on a level grade showing a lower cost than "normal" walking.

Priming the plantarflexors with electrical stimulation induces more economical walking
Abstract. Compared with other feasible gaits, the preferred mechanics of ‘normal’ (young, healthy, unimpaired) human walking appear to minimize whole-body

when you use AI to write code you put yourself in cognitive debt ; at some point you will have to spend the time and effort to understand the code, if you are ever to use it for anything you put your name on. May feel like a shortcut but really it’s only the beginning of your work it’s not the end

Case closed: my predictive (minimum-metabolic cost) simulation of running clearly strikes the ground with its heel first.

Joint loading in the presence of torsional deformities is overestimated unless gait adaptations are considered: a predictive simulation approach
Lower-limb torsional deformities have been shown to alter joint loading, although the findings vary between studies perhaps due to the simulation approaches applied. This study used predictive simulat...

Too many manuscripts these days. I've done 16 reviews in 2026, not counting revisions. Have co-authored two submissions myself. Are the authors submitting all these manuscripts also doing a proportionate number of reviews? The system breaks down if people only submit and won't review.

If you're like me (obstinate Mac user who likes computer simulation), IPOPT iterates about 20% faster on my new 2026 MacBook Pro (M5 Pro CPU) vs. previous 2024 MacBook Pro (M4 Pro CPU). Only problem is the charging brick isn't big enough and it drops battery when running Moco, even when plugged in!

Motion of the residual limb in the socket is one of those things we assume is "bad", but there is not actually all that much biomechanics data on it. Great to see studies like this! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
