😍 A historic night for Heart of Midlothian Football Club as they qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Down to 10 men, away from home, over 120 minutes, and against UEFA’s 74th-ranked team. For perspective, Celtic’s collapse was against LASK, ranked 99th. That’s how it’s done. Heroes.

One Scotsman from Dingwall helped lay part of the foundations of the football city that produced the greatest player of all time.

Messi grew up in Rosario and came through Newell’s academy, in a city where football culture had been shaped by pioneers like Calder.

That club became Rosario Central, one of Argentina’s biggest clubs and Newell’s Old Boys’ great rivals.

Football was his passion. In 1889, he helped to bring football to the city by persuading the railway to provide land for football and was elected the first president of the newly formed Central Argentine Railway Athletic Club.

Colin Calder was born in Dingwall in 1860. After his father died, the family fell into poverty before Calder emigrated to Argentina to work for the Central Argentine Railway.

There must be quite a history of Scots in the Argentine. RB Cunningham Grahame, Don Roberto, spent much time there too, and apparently sourced horses there for use in European battlefields during WW1.

Hutton retired in 1911 and passed away in Buenos Aires in 1936. Scotland's Argentinian football legacy can still be seen in Argentinian football, with players such as Alexis Mac Allister, whose ancestry can be traced back to Fife in Scotland, playing for the national team.

In 1898, his school launched the Alumni Athletic Club. They were virtually unstoppable, winning 22 titles in just 13 years and supplying the core of the early Argentine national team.

Following a hiatus in 1892, Hutton picked up the baton and made organised football stick permanently in Argentina. In 1893, he gathered local club representatives and established the new "Argentine Association Football League" - the organisation we know today as the AFA.

In 1891 the Association Argentine Football League was established by fellow Scot Alex Lamont of St. Andrew's Scots School. The league was won by a team of Scots from the school and it was the first football league outside of the British Isles.

Born in Glasgow in 1853 and educated at Edinburgh University, Watson Hutton emigrated to Argentina in 1882. He started working at St Andrew's Scots School in Buenos Aires, bringing with him a deep belief that sports were fundamental to a good education.

🧵🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤝🇦🇷 From a Scottish teacher to Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup, the path of Argentine football starts with one man. The father of Argentinian football isn't an Argentinian, he was a Scotsman - Alexander Watson Hutton.

Humans have existed for ~300,000 years. For almost all of that time, life expectancy at birth was just 20–35 years. In 1800 the global average was still only 29. Today it’s around 73. The greatest leap in human survival happened not over millennia, but in the last 150 years.

The greatest irony of our time is that we have an abundance of resources/energy to sustain our planet, yet our economic system - reinforced by imperialism and some political leaders, makes abundance feel scarce and impossible. That is what’s driving the climate/ecological crisis.

He was based in the camp under Russian attack at Balaclava in Crimea in 1854. The “Thin Red Line” held - wearing the very uniforms he made. The action was immortalised in Robert Gibb’s painting located in Edinburgh Castle.

Increasing UK inequality created a fertile ground for anti-migrant sentiment and Brexit due to perceived scarcity > Nigel Farage and Reform back Brexit which further increases inequality in UK > Whilst Tories and Labour echo them on Brexit and stoking up anti-migrant sentiment.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The SNP will always keep Scotland’s water in Scotland’s hands. The current fiasco in England shows that public ownership works. Scottish Water delivers a better service, reinvestment not profit, and 20% lower bills than England. 🚰
A graphic showing a tweet set onto the background of a scottish lake. The tweet reads:

“Despite what Labour are claiming, Scottish water is world renowned.

87% of Scotland's entire water environment is assessed by SEPA as having a 'high' or 'good' classification for water quality - up from 82% in 2014.

Public ownership is not just possible, it works in Scotland!”

The tweet is quote tweeting another tweet, which reads:

“My letter to UK Gov Minister Steve Reed asking him to retract his false statements about the condition of water in Scotland. IWC was able to report we’re in a much better position than rUk with 87% “high” or “good” status. Public ownership works.“

The UK has its own history of empire, colonialism, slavery and ethnic cleansing. There’s arguably more value in more people learning about that - so British exceptionalism doesn’t rule the waves and moral complacency doesn’t take hold.
