Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Foxwhelp. One of the great apple varieties. Favoured for five centuries, the cider it produces cannot be matched by any other variety for it's intensity, clarity of expression, and notes of strawberries, rhubarb and raspberry depending on vintage / method / orchard. 0101
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Early Taynton Squash, afaik. Again very scab heavy, doubt it helps it's a very thick, twiggy canopy growing on a north slope and an absolutely massive tree. Favoured sleeping spot for sheep means we have no grass under it either. Makes a Perry that tastes of pears poached in honey. Love it 2121
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Aylton Red, Aka Red Pear. Someone once told me they're meant to be two different varieties but I don't know about that. Our trees are established but prone to scab, yet they're very productive and it makes a supreme, creamy, nutty Perry. 1 month early this year which is bonkers and an outlier. 1101
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Thorn pears, from two different orchards. An iconic early season perry pear, probably the second most common variety after Blakeney Red. Good acidity with often light tannins too. Healthy, semi-vigorous trees. Heartily endorse. 1202
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Definitely agree it is worth heading to Chester, but actually what Sarah is drinking is the new version of Autumn. We have sold out of the Collab original. Just a handful of keykegs left that aren't onsale anywhere currently! 120
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Yes, exactly. Was the same story last year. The little bit of rain at the end of August has also been timely in swelling the early season fruit. Not that the Foxwhelp would show it mind! 010

Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026The power that controls the money in the world seems to be relentless in making decisions that threaten human security and damage the environment. It's depressing. At least for us on our small patch of this earth, we can do what we can to be part of the antidote. If such a thing can be hoped for! 030
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Climate change is a real and serious threat. The fruit may be doing well but the actual health of the tree is a different and separate issue. We have diversified our fruiting varieties to now more than 200, and that diversity is our biggest buffer against extreme, unpredictable growing seasons. 121
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 11/09/2026On our farm this year the weather has been difficult for working but excellent for fruit. Our established, wide canopy trees protect the soil and the ground moisture whilst enjoying the sunshine on their fruit. Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 29/08/2026The red apples on the ground always ripen this time of year and they're very very tasty. But all those photos are from the orchard in the bottom of the farm valley which has a spring & brook running along it. So they're well watered. 010
Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry @rosscider.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Entirely dependent on variety and also the situation of each orchard. Where one has exclusively upright growth, the bushier habit of the Sandford is quite exciting and unusual! 020
