The Cholmondeley Sisters, by an unknown British artist, c. 1600-10, Oil on wood, 886 × 1723 mm (Tate Britain). According to the inscription it portrays: "Two Ladies of the Cholmondeley Family, Who were born the same day, Married the same day, And brought to Bed [gave birth] the same day’"
"According to the inscription (bottom left), this painting shows ‘Two Ladies of the Cholmondeley Family, Who were born the same day, Married the same day, And brought to Bed [gave birth] the same day’. To mark this dynastic event, they are formally presented in bed, their babies wrapped in scarlet fabric. Identical at a superficial glance, the lace, jewellery and eye colours of the ladies and infants are in fact carefully differentiated. The format echoes tomb sculpture of the period. The identity of the women is unclear." https://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-britain/display/historic-early-modern-british-art/1545

Birds, fruit trees, even a peacock -- such a lovely space for such a sad subject. Last Supper in the Cenacolo di Ognissanti, Florence, by Domenico Ghirlandaio, 1480.

Today’s artist: Domenico Ghirlandaio of Florence. Had a perfectly good birthday in June but we were busy, so we’re giving him today. Here by himself at age 40, in detail from his Adoration of the Magi.

2/2 Holbein’s original drawing, pricked for exact transfer, yet in final painting Thomas More looks both sadder and more resolute.

Anne of Cleves looked deceptively attractive in this portrait in 1539. At least, it fooled Henry VIII into agreeing to marry her. Not for long! By Hans Holbein, whose day is today.

2/2 Holbein's drawing for his portrait of Jane Seymour. Without all the extravagant clothing she looks even more dreary and possibly not especially nice. But that was not a requirement!

Jane Seymour, who always looks a bit dreary in spite of her A++ wardrobe, but Henry loved her. She did produce a son, after all! Painted in 1536 by Hans Holbein, whose day is today.

‘One I Danced Withal’ - this painting was inspired by a night vaporetto journey along the Grand Canal in Venice, when there were people dancing on the steps of the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute. So beautiful. Available for sale. See details at www.rosalindlyons.com
