It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (8/23/26)
Happy Monday bookish people! My part of Southern California is once again under an extreme heat warning, and so we've gone back to being inside people as much as possible. We go out to run errands early in the morning, or after it gets dark, because the rest of the day is just unbearably hot. If that's true of your part of the world as well, I hope you're staying cool and hydrated.

Friends it is HOT here today in my little part of So Cal. High of 97, somewhere around 68% humidity. Needless to say, we are very much staying inside today. I feel blessed we have A/C and ample fans.

Book Review: A Trade of Blood (Ana & Din #3) by Robert Jackson Bennett
Brilliant detective Ana Dolabra must prove a man's innocence to stop a civil war in the third book of the series that began with The Tainted Cup, named an Edgar, Hugo, and World Fantasy Award Finalist and one of the best books of the year (New York Times Book Review, NPR, Elle)—from the bestselling author of The Founders Trilogy. In the canton of Sapirdad, two of the Empire’s most powerful families are moments away from going to war with each other, their hundreds of retainers gathered with swords drawn. If blood is spilt, the whole of the empire may be plunged into starvation and chaos. To de-escalate matters, someone must do the impossible: prove that one family’s eldest son is innocent of a gruesome and unforgivable murder, despite the incontrovertible evidence against him. It is with this undertaking that the great detective Ana Dolabra is tasked, her assistant Din at her side—and the two find themselves racing with great speed and little dignity to the scene. As ever, the impossible proves little obstacle for the deadly combination of Ana’s intellect and Din’s keen eye, and mere hours after riding into the dusty town, Ana glimpses the greater pattern behind the crime. A deeper, subtler web of death is being woven in plain sight, by a mastermind with an ancient magical technology at his disposal. But even Ana's uncanny insight is of little use when each new suspect she uncovers ends up dead--with each new killing calculated to bring tensions between the two rival clans past the boiling point. And as Din pursues their adversary through the canton's wild ranges, sprawling ranches, and reeking slaughterhouses, he finds his loyalties divided in unexpected ways.

Hello friends, and happy Tuesday! Los Angeles is back in the clutches of a heat wave and so it is the part of the year where I just pretty much exist inside. An outside event? Before it gets dark outside? No thank you. Anywhere that has A/C is where you'll find me. On the weekends I'll likely be posted up in front of a fan with a book.

Book Review: Girl of Lore by Melanie Dale
A witch and her young ward discover a magical, walking house and learn the true meaning of home in this cozy, enchanting novel from New York Times bestselling author Jaleigh Johnson. Evelyn Sharpe is accustomed to dealing with natural disasters as a land witch, but she longs for a life with a little less danger for her and her adopted daughter, Ruby. So when the opportunity to take over as Caretaker of Thornwood House--a sentient home that acts as the magical heart of the village of Iskendra--arises, it seems almost fated.  When they arrive in sunny Iskendra, Evie and Ruby find the house is nothing like what they expected: First of all, it has walked away from the address. Thornwood House is also grumpy, guarded, and extremely hesitant to allow the two witches through its doors.  Armed with gentle hearts and wild magic, Evie and Ruby begin to form tentative bonds with the house and the citizens of the small town. But there's something deeply damaged about the building seeping into the forests surrounding Iskendra, and Evie will have to use all her power to protect the roots she's started to grow.

The image is of a four panel comic.
Panel one shows a giraffe tripping on a rock. The giraffe says “woop” as it stumbles.
Panel two zooms in on the giraffe’s face. The giraffe is sweating in embarrassment. We see a thought bubble above the giraffe. The text within the thought bubble reads, “that was embarrassing.”
The third panel shows the giraffe closing its eyes and munching on leaves reassuringly. The thought bubble above the giraffe reads, “but no one will remember.”
The fourth and final panel pans to an elephant staring at the giraffe from behind some bushes.

Book Review: Carry Me to My Grave by Christopher Golden
From New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden comes a high concept horror novel about a man trying to protect his dead mother's body from the evil that is hunting them. Maggie Wise will take your eyes. When Malcolm was growing up, the local kids made up that chant about his mother, claiming she was a witch. He and his siblings did their best to ignore it. Now, Maggie is dying, and those same siblings have left Malcolm and his sister-in-law Violet to hold a vigil at her bedside. But they’re not as alone as they think they are. A dark figure waits and watches from beneath the willow tree across the street. Hundreds of miles away, an ancient evil stirs in its burrow under a farmer’s cornfield. Across the country, other buried things begin to dream in anticipation of Maggie’s demise. On her deathbed, the old woman elicits a promise from Malcolm, her youngest child―when she dies, he and Violet must return her body to her birthplace in Shediak, Maine. From the moment she takes her last breath, before her remains are even loaded aboard the baggage car of the Imperial Limited, there are forces trying to stop Malcolm from fulfilling that promise. Violence erupts on the train, evil preys on its passengers, and once the sun goes down, those long-buried things are coming to make Maggie Wise pay for her past. God help anyone who stands in their way.

Book Review: Shorefall (The Founders Trilogy #2) by Robert Jackson Bennett
As a magical revolution remakes a city, an ancient evil is awakened in a brilliant new novel from the Hugo-nominated author of Foundryside and the Divine Cities trilogy. A few years ago, Sancia Grado would’ve happily watched Tevanne burn. Now, she’s hoping to transform her city into something new. Something better. Together with allies Orso, Gregor, and Berenice, she’s about to strike a deadly blow against Tevanne’s cruel robber-baron rulers and wrest power from their hands for the first time in decades. But then comes a terrifying warning: Crasedes Magnus himself, the first of the legendary hierophants, is about to be reborn. And if he returns, Tevanne will be just the first place to feel his wrath. Thousands of years ago, Crasedes was an ordinary man who did the impossible: Using the magic of scriving—the art of imbuing objects with sentience—he convinced reality that he was something more than human. Wielding powers beyond comprehension, he strode the world like a god for centuries, meting out justice and razing empires single-handedly, cleansing the world through fire and destruction—and even defeating death itself. Like it or not, it’s up to Sancia to stop him. But to have a chance in the battle to come, she’ll have to call upon a god of her own—and unlock the door to a scriving technology that could change what it means to be human. And no matter who wins, nothing will ever be the same. The awe-inspiring second installment of the Founders Trilogy, Shorefall returns us to the world Robert Jackson Bennett created in his acclaimed Foundryside . . . and forges it anew.

Eight Shadow Figures, by Utagawa Hiroshige, ca. 1842, Japan
This mid-nineteenth-century woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, titled Eight Shadow Figures, offers a delightful glimpse into the popular pastimes of the Edo period. The print functions as a visual manual for te-kage-e (hand shadows), presenting a grid of sixteen panels that alternate between the specific hand positioning and the resulting silhouette cast against a shōji screen. Hiroshige captures a diverse range of subjects, from animals like the fox (kizune), rabbit, and owl to human figures and objects, including a snail and a person wearing a traditional hat. Each figure is accompanied by short, instructional text, inviting the viewer to participate in this accessible and imaginative form of entertainment.

My queer magical girl novels are crammed full of so many feelings, action scenes, Portland weirdness, trans joy, and gayness that I think you'll really love them. Support an indie author and read "Magica Riot" and its new sequel "Magica Riot: Full Boom" in ebook, print, or audio! magicariot.com/buy
The cover artwork of the novels "Magica Riot" and "Magica Riot: Full Bloom," the former featuring protagonist Claire in her purple and black magical girl costume, the latter featuring the characters Iris and Bloom in an orange dress and black dress. These are placed over a blurred photo of a keytar. Artwork of the character Nova, another trans magical girl, is placed by the book covers, and her dialogue bubble reads "It's flammin' gay!" Text above reads:
Read the adventures of Portland's queer magical girl rock band
Trans girls! Music-based magic! Lesbian feelings! Portland weird! Colorful characters! Cool band van! Goopy monsters! Evil villains! Leftist social commentary!

How I’ve Been Pronouncing It (Feat. Foghorn Leghorn, my… roommate?)
Comic. I’m at my desk, leaning over to the doorway, saying “Hey! Foghorn! Foghorn Leghorn! Get in here!”
Foghorn Leghorn is walking past the doorway, “Boy, I tell ya, I tell ya, not so loud, boy. What, I say, I say, what d’ya want?”
Next panel, I’m gesturing to my computer. “How do I find that really good manga you recommended? It’s an anime now? I keep getting Halloween costumes.” Foghorn leans over my chair, “well, boy, I say, I say, you ain’t typin the entire title.”
Last panel, I turn around- “you said ‘witch hat.’ Foghorn gets in my face- “open your ears, boy!! ‘Witch Hat Atelier, I tell ya! I tell ya ‘Atelier,’ I tell ya’”
