'Ya Did Good, Kid' A beached dolphin is accompanied by her ecological precursor: an Ichthyosaurus memorised by the earth itself, a spirit of Black Ven. Perhaps she'll become such a relic, too. I once saw a dead dolphin on Charmouth Beach. Sadly poetic. #paleoart for Day 2 of #Inktober2026 'Relic'.
Digital palaeoart of a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) lying on a beach, belly-up, eyes shut. Looming over it is a black cliff--Charmouth's Black Ven--with a nearly-complete articulated fossil skeleton of an Ichthyosaurus (a dolphin-like marine reptile that lived in the Early Jurassic) exposed so closely to the dolphin that it looks as though it could be coming down to keep it company.

'The Beast's Bounty' 37 million autumns ago in Colorado, a young Megacerops is finally tall enough to taste some of the first fresh apples... ever! (Malus florissantensis) He joyfully collects them atop his basket-like head. This is my #paleoart for Day 1 of #Inktober2026! The prompt was 'Apple'.
Digital palaeoart of an extinct rhino-like mammal called Megacerops, which had a forked bony crest on its nose. He is happily picking bright yellow crabapples of the extinct species Malus florissantensis and using the shape of his head like a basket. I've used bold, ink-like outlines and a colouring style meant to mimic that of Copic markers.

And finally, here's my Flocking #paleostream art of a Hadrosaurus foulkii--the first dinosaur species mounted in America, currently at the ANSP--on the move with a bristly baby (representing science's continuous advancement). My bad for any inaccuracies--I misheard the time limit 😅 #SaveTheAcademy
Digital art of a mother and baby Hadrosaurus foulkii walking through shallow water, surrounded by trees and mountains.

The fate of 19 million specimens hangs in the balance, and we must at least try to preserve them as well as the public's and scientific community's continued access to them for generations to come. See this video for a quick rundown of the situation... youtube.com/shorts/4mq6s...

No matter where you are in the world, this is a huge blow to science and sets a dangerous precedent for the gutting of education everywhere. But no matter where you are in the world, you can join the immense pushback against this decision by following the quick instructions at save-the-academy.org

THE OLDEST NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM IN THE AMERICAS NEEDS YOUR HELP! On 1st September, Drexel University announced--very suddenly and without transparency or justification--that the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia is closing for good at the end of September.

The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE) has now withdrawn from the Ed Sheeran tour.
Artistic recreation of an Ordovician seafloor with abundant and diverse biota, including arthropods, nautiloids, sea stars, rugs corals, and many weird critters that do not condone genocide, despite their primitive nature and lack of $300 million net worth.

Monkeys make friends with other species, and that can tell us a lot about how keeping pets came about. Great article by @cyrilgrueter.bsky.social et al., reporting friendly primate interactions with a whopping 55 non-primate species! 🧪🐒🐕 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Results from my third #paleostream 🦆 7th August Waptia, Megapterygius, Eomola, and Talpanas Now we're all caught up, and future batches will be freshly cooked following every Friday night stream! #paleoart #sciart #art
Digital pencil sketch of a dark red Waptia in the deep sea, dramatically beating its dolphin-like horizontal tail fluke. I intended to make the antennae brown and give it a Mario theme, but I didn't have enough time.Digital pencil sketch of a Megapterygius mosasaur gliding overhead in a sunset sea with its enlarged front flippers outstretched like a plane, looking down at the camera with a superior expression.Digital sketch of an Eomola (a basal ocean sunfish) swimming in the open sea.Digital sketch of a Talpanas (Hawaiian mole duck) sleeping in a burrow during the day. Its pattern takes inspiration from Falklands steamer ducks and kākāpō, although this blind bird probably wasn't brightly coloured.

My first Flocking #paleostream ✨ 20th June Palaeoloxodon antiquus (straight-tusked elephant), Rhomaleosaurus, Palaeosaniwa, and Utaurora. I'll polish more and more in post as I develop technique--so for now, these are near-raw results from speedpaints 20 minutes each.
Digital pencil sketch of a straight-tusked elephant on a plain white backrgound, spraying water onto the side of its body with its trunk. (The original plan was to have a pursuer it's spraying at to shoo it away.)Digital pencil sketch of a Rhomaleosaurus on a mint-to-teal gradient background to indicate the sea; it swims by beating its four wing-like flippers in tandem, mouth agape as though ambushing a prey item.Digital pencil sketch of a Palaeosaniwa lizard on a plain white background; while basking on a rock, it's grumpily turning its head to the source of an annoying noise: the nostrils of a curious Nanotyrannus.Digital pencil sketch of an Utaurora on a green-to-teal gradient background to indicate the deep sea; this abnormal arthropod's ambitious attempt to ambush a Leanchoilia has become an arm*-wrestling match.

Time to start sharing results of Flocking #paleostream s! I've done three so far and I can tell I've got a long way to go art-wise and science-wise, but there seems to be some improvement already. And it's exciting to think that as I keep learning, it should come across visually here.
