“Of course the Republicans would be worse. What the mainstream Democrat seems incapable of accepting is that, for an even remotely functioning conscience, there exists a point beyond which relative harm can no longer offset absolute evil. For a lot of people, genocide is that point. Suddenly, an otherwise very persuasive argument takes on a different meaning: “Vote for the liberal though he harms you because the conservative will harm you more” starts to sound a lot like “Vote for the liberal though he harms you because the conservative might harm me, too.”

The classic Martin Luther King Jr. letter which is always relevant to modern centrist liberalism.
Martin Luther King Jr. in "Letter From Birmingham City Jail" in 1963 saying: Over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.

“But the moral prohibition on siding with any administration that endorses genocide will force a different flavor of the exact same logic that centrist liberalism has depended on for so long: hold your nose and align with the least worst thing. Only the least worst thing will no longer be the mild, ethics-agnostic emptiness of modern Western liberalism, nor will it be the multitude of barbaric authoritarians and their secret prisons. It will be communal solidarity, or else nothing, a walking away from all of this. Countless otherwise pragmatic people who would in any other circumstance choose liberalism by default will instead decide none of this is worth the damage to one’s soul. They will instead support no one, vote for no one, wash their hands of any ordering of the world that results in choices no better than this. And the obvious centrist refrain—But do you want the deranged right wing to win?—should, after even a moment of self-reflection, yield to a far more important question: How empty does your message have to be for a deranged right wing to even have a chance of winning? Of all the epitaphs that may one day be written on the gravestone of Western liberalism, the most damning is this: Faced off against a nihilistic, endlessly cruel manifestation of conservatism, and somehow managed to make it close.”

today we'll learn kettle logic and totally not notice any parallels between it and controversies surrounding certain politicians on BlueSky. kettle logic is using multiple arguments inconsistent with each other to defend the same point. see the following example from wikipedia:
Freud relates the story of a man who was accused by his neighbour of having returned a kettle in a damaged condition and the three arguments he offers.

    1. That he had returned the kettle undamaged
    2. That it was already damaged when he borrowed it
    3. That he had never borrowed it in the first place

Though the three arguments are inconsistent, Freud notes that it is so much the better, as if even one is found to be true then the man must be acquitted.

A document from the National Institute on Mental Health titled the "Warning Signs of Suicide." Further states "The behaviors listed below may be some of the signs that someone is thinking about suicide" and lists "talking about: wanting to die, great guilt or shame, or being a burden to others," "feeling: empty, hopeless, trapped, or having no reason to live, extremely sad, more anxious, agitated, or full of rage, or unbearable emotional or physical pain," "changing behavior, such as: making a plan or researching ways to die, withdrawing from friends, saying goodbye, giving away important items, or making a will, taking dangerous risks such as driving extremely fast, displaying extreme mood swings, eating or sleeping more or less, or using drugs or alcohol more often." It goes on to say "If these warning signs apply to you or someone you know, get help as soon as possible, particularly if the behavior is new or has increased recently" and lists the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline which one can call or text. Also lists the 988lifeline.org website which one can chat online with.

APNews Article saying:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Eric Hildenbrand has noticed prices continue to rise this year, even with President Donald Trump in the White House. He doesn’t blame Trump, his choice for president in 2024, but says Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democrats who control his home state, California, are at fault.

“You can’t compare California with the rest of the country,” said Hildenbrand, who is 76 and lives in San Diego. “I don’t know what’s going on in the rest of the country. It seems like prices are dropping. Things are getting better, but I don’t necessarily see it here.”

Not to glorify Spacey here, but this quote from House of Cards really says a lot about where politics is at right now, because as much as Democrats love to raise money off Trump and act outraged, they’re way too complicit in the very behavior they claim to oppose.
Quote taken from House of Cards season 5 episode 12:
Frank Underwood: Now, you accuse me of breaking the rules, and I tell you I am playing by the rules. The very rules that you and I all agreed upon. The very rules that you and I all wrote together. So yes, I'm guilty as hell, but then so are all of you. Yes, the system is corrupt, but you wanted a guardian at the gate like me. And why? Because you know I will do whatever it takes. And you have all enjoyed it, been party to it and benefited by it.
    [Frank addresses the audience.]
Frank Underwood: Oh, don't deny it. You've loved it. You don't actually need me to stand for anything, you just need me to stand. To be the strong man, the man of action. My God, you are addicted to action and slogans. It doesn't matter what I say. It doesn't matter what I do. Just as long as I'm doing something, you're happy to be along for the ride. And frankly, I don't blame you. With all the foolishness and indecision in your lives, why not a man like me? I don't apologize. In the end, I don't care whether you love me or you hate me, just as long as I win. The deck is stacked. The rules are rigged. Welcome to the death of the Age of Reason. There is no right or wrong. Not anymore. There's only being in, and then being out.

I saw this Reddit post earlier and it’s so true. The rise of incels and toxic masculinity stems from people who can’t just make friends and instead view every woman as a potential partner. Just be friends and be okay with that, that’s really all it takes.
Reddit post saying: I'm a man in my early 30s. I don’t have anything particularly special going for me—no insane social skills, no high-status career, no crazy hobbies that make me a magnet for conversation. The only thing I can say I do differently than a lot of lonely men is engage with people out of curiosity rather than desire.

The issue with male loneliness isn’t some massive cultural shift that has made people averse to men in public. It’s not that society has abandoned men—it’s that many men have abandoned society by narrowing their social focus to only one goal: romantic validation.

I see this all the time. Guys claim that no one wants to talk to them, but what they really mean is: "Attractive women aren’t engaging with me."

These same men often ignore entire categories of social opportunities—talking to older people, engaging with other men platonically, striking up casual conversations with strangers just to connect. If the only people you try to talk to are women you find attractive, of course you’re going to feel isolated. That’s not loneliness; that’s self-inflicted social starvation.

Men who constantly claim that "no one wants to talk to them," ask yourself: When was the last time you made conversation with someone without an ulterior motive? Do you engage with people who don’t directly serve your personal interests? Have you made any effort to contribute to a community rather than expecting one to embrace you?

The men who actually go out into the world with an open mind and a willingness to engage—rather than just seeking validation—don’t seem to be the ones complaining about loneliness.

If your entire social strategy revolves around being "wanted" rather than wanting to engage with the world, you’ll always feel lonely. And that’s not a societal problem. That’s a you problem. If you are lonely—truly lonely, not just horny and starved for romantic affection—go outside and talk to people. It's really that simple.

I get that this isn't as relevant to the argument you're making, but I feel it's still relevant for anyone going through the process of questioning what self-expression would make them the happiest and most comfortable in their skin, especially for people who haven't even tried questioning it.
Tumblr post by "homunculus-argument" saying: The way people just assume their are universal. No thoughts, opinions, or feelings about it. I'm just observing it.

A hypothetical person: "I'm not disabled in any way, but I always go out of my way to avoid doing this completely normal everyday thing able-bodied people can do because doing that causes me physical pain."

Bystander: Dude...

Another hypothetical person: "I'm not gay or anything, but on average you really do see more good-looking men than you see good-looking women."

Bystander: Bruh...

Yet another hypothetical person: "It must really suck to have ADHD or something, I mean, I forget what I was doing every 30 seconds and get yelled at about it at least twice a day, it would suck if that was like, a clinical thing."

Bystander: Brother...

Last hypothetical person: "I'm perfectly happy being a cis man but wouldn't everyone rather be a woman if they had the chance?"

Bystander: Ma'am.

So which is it? Should the left stay silent when Democrats take awful positions which WILL lose them votes, or are they right to call it out?
Post from someone saying "I don't believe I ever suggested appeasement. I don't much like what Newsom is doing with this blog, but the way the Left turns on ANYTHING it doesn't like virtually ensures they will not have an electable candidate in 4 years.
