Shaped by context: Evolutionary trajectories of desiccation tolerance in land plants
Desiccation tolerance (DT), the ability to survive near-complete cellular dehydration, is widespread in diaspores but rare in the vegetative tissues of land plants. The patchy and punctuated phylogen...

The January issue of New Phytologist is online now, featuring on the cover @roseamarks.bsky.social’s article on the physiology and genomics of the resurrection plant, Myrothanus flabellifolia. doi.org/10.1111/nph.... (I’m posting here for Dr. Marks, who is currently doing field work off the grid)

The architecture of resilience: a genome assembly of Myrothamnus flabellifolia sheds light on desiccation tolerance and sex determination
Myrothamnus flabellifolia is a dioecious resurrection plant endemic to southern Africa that has become an important model for understanding desiccation tolerance. Despite its ecological and medicina...

new paper! this one holds a special place in my heart--it's the project that brought me to South Africa--just a short 6 years later, we have a product Myrothamnus is a resurrection plant with deep cultural roots. it's been a privilege to study this iconic species that survives with so little.

new preprint! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... we camped in the bush, got caught in a storm, and watched Myrothamnus flabellifolia spring back to life.... now we’ve got a genome assembly and a field-based transcriptomic timecourse to tell its story

This was an incredible, international, tree-of-life spanning collaborative effort led by @roseamarks.bsky.social. I had fun and it was great model for how we can start to reach across disciplinary barriers and silos. @naturecomms.bsky.social #interdisciplinary
