Survive Style 5+ was really good
My review of Survive Style 5+:
"This movie hits heights of hyper-reallist set design I haven't seen since Mike Myers' "The Cat In The Hat".
Fucking insane shit.
Can we get some more of this please??

I started scrubbing through the movie after I finished watching it to take some cool screenshots to send to friends and EVERY. SINGLE. SHOT. is absolutely stacked with punchy colours, the backgrounds so rich with unique set dressing you'll still be picking new, weird stuff out in your 10th viewing. It's so good!

The cast is just as vibrant and fun to watch, each character up to their own surrealist antics in their own corner of town, occasionally stepping on each others toes. Characters wardrobes are impeccable, I especially loved the trio of boys who are all always wearing their signature colours, their very presence in the shot seemingly demanding the rest of the scene change colours to match.

Shout out crow girl and her friend!
Shout out my favourite thief boys!
Shout out gay people!!!

The OST is killer too.
Any movie that uses a drum break to punctuate a dramatic camera move WILL live on forever in my heart

I love the song they used, but Free Bird would have been fucking wild for the ending"

Watched Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person(2023) last night ant it was great :)
my review of Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person:
"Sasha is 100% who I would have been if life came with a character creator. I unfortunately grew up more alike a paul.
Such is life...

I have such a weak spot for low-key slice of life-ish vampire movies, and I vibe with this one especially hard.
I'll be tricky to really talk about it without showing my hand a bit too much, and I almost certainly will.

This movie has a kind of friendliness with death I think, or is at least sympathetic to those that feel it.
I think like there's a certain clarity on the value of human life that a friendliness with death affords you, and this movie gets it.
The fact that every person is special, that we all impact others' lives casting ripples so far it's impossible to know how many places they've touched or how meaninfully, isn't just a nice thought,an aspirational sentiment. It can be an infuriating, suffocating and irrefutable fact to those of a certain disposition.
Despite how inconvenient it can be, it's so true.
Everyone is special.
It would be very hard to be a humanist vampire. It is also hard to be a consenting suicidal person. Nobody can be removed so easily.

It's interesting to see a film with this kind of premise that doesn't really question humans' position as prey very much. All the focus is on how characters deal with it.

I think where we might have expected to see a return to vampires as allegory for the rich and powerful with how current events are going, I think I'm instead seeing a stronger trend of vampires as aspirational escape for the weirdos and shut-ins of the world developing?
Maybe that's not really a surprise with how vampires have been a used to tell queer stories or generally represent the socially ostracised and misunderstood for ages, but either way I am absolutely here for it.

Seriously tho I AM the dumbest girl on the planet but what do I have to do to actually meet one of these beautiful, long dark haired, moody vampire women..."

Dead Leaves (2004)
My Dead Leaves review:
"I was watching a video recently where they said that F1 drivers don't really blink while cornering, and blink less than the average person overall, cause at the speeds they're travelling one blink would constitute being blind for over 11 metres of road.
That's kinda what watching this feels like. If you look away at any time for any reason, no matter how briefly, you will miss something, and that thing you missed will have been 100% worth seeing.

I'd hate to miss any one of the many explosions, the guns a-threembo, the "With my dick's size and rigidity, I will not be beaten!!!".
Every moment of this movie is firing off on all cylinders so hard it busts a piston, smashing it through the engine wall and spewing boiling hot motor oil on everyone around.

It's a masterwork of every animation technique used to build up and release tension, the tempo of movements constantly sliding from so fast they could only use smears, into a hit-stop, bursting into an explosive reaction into a slow motion recovery, till the whole thing starts over, with such a masterful application of squash and stretch, secondary action, freeze frames, camera shake...I will be studying this for my own work.

The few times the tempo drops for more than a second the movie immediately starts making fun of itself for daring to slow down, as the story revels in every single idea that randomly pops into it's head.
If you want to watch something throw itself full send into every decision it makes, watch this.
If you found Dear Sister by SNL even SLIGHTLY funny, watch this.

This is one of the animations of all time.
Sex so great it busts you out of sci-fi jail.
"I hope Donkey Kong walks into my house and smashes a barrel over my head killing my instantly"-ass movie"

Girl Detective Club (1986)

VaguelyRoses @rose.armfelloff.net · 31/01/2025
My second 1986 OVA in a row this week, Girl Detective Club was great fun
My review of Girl Detective Club (1986):
"I watched this randomy cause it was called Girl Detective Club and I like every part of that name, but I was not expecting it to be absolutely bursting at the seams with fun ideas! It has to move at a pretty breakneck pace just to get to everything, and the end result is a ridiculous and wonderful little OVA. It's got random plotting evil headmasters, it's got fun evil-girl lackeys, it's got inexplicable super weapons and massive property damage. The door sound effects are the videogameiest shit I've ever heard and the OP song does the same song-ending "la la la"s as Elton Johns Crocodile Rock. The story follows a couple of rulebreaking schoolgirls trying trying to find their friend who was kidnapped in the night. And these girls, omg, bimbo levels off the charts. I love them. At one point they come across an enormous gun collection and one of them decides to steal one and stash it in her panties without seemingly even knowing herself why she wants it, only for it to be immediately useful 10 seconds later, and that's one of the more reasonable things that happens in this OVA. This thing was non-sequetar fun in the best way. Such a good time, and cherry of all cherries on the cake, we get honest to god non-subtextual yuri!!! Amazing shit, no notes, 10/10"

Watched Call Me Tonight last night and it was adorable
My review of Call Me Tonight (1986):

"Man this thing is suuuper cute! Horny monsters, cute confident call girls, weird biker butches with inexplicable access to bazookas? What's not to love? It's packed with charm, and despite being ostensibly a comedy they even have one really effective horror scene, the diner nosebleed. I think that's probably my favourite part. Considering how much they had to pack into 30 minutes they did a great job selling the romance between the main characters too, I wish we got to see a little more of them together in the ending wrap-up. Big recommend. I do give thee one content warning for sexual assault though."

Female Prisoner Scorpion #701! Rough movie, not for the feint of heart, viewer discretion advised, but highly recommended
My review of Female Prisoner Scorpion #701

"I've been trying to write down my thoughts about this movie for an hour. I have killed many darlings, this is my best try for now. If any one true crime exists, it's forgetting your empathy for others. At least I believe this to be true. Subject to constant torture at the hands of an institution so vile that no words satisfy my vitriol, these prisoners' desire for a scapegoat in the face of total disempowerment may be understandable, but cruelty is still cruelty no matter the source Prisoner 701 is a mirror. "Treat others as you would have them treat you" would be good to keep in mind."

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
My review of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind:

"This was almost too much for me, having now finished it I feel as though I've been slammed with one one of those giant hammer traps that swing down from the cieling in cartoon piramids.

I don't think I'll be able to put well enough into words how this movie made me feel.
I think it was...grief, hitting me in waves throughout my viewing.
Raw sadness, for the state of everything. For how sickeningly cruel and pigheaded and ignorant and evil people can be. For what we've lost, for what we will lose.
This film made itself a conduit for feelings I feel like I've been ignoring since I was a kid, when I got so upset about hunting season starting in my local area and news of global warming affecting bird's migration patterns that I just decided I didn't want to know or think about it anymore. That I had had enough already.

I am usually numb to most things.
Not tonight"

Star Virgin(1988) was cute, cute, CUUUTE!!
My Review of Star Virgin(1988)

"This thing is so freaking cuuuute!!!

The happiest and dumbest cartoon fun built on weirdly salient social commentary, making fun of old guys who wished WW2 never ended and having our main character draw her power from the fact that she is never more than a short walk away from someone ready to assault her if given the chance x.x
It's wild, but despite it's premise this show maintains the breezy tone of an episode of Power Rangers.

From it's many funny monster puppets to the prime himbo specimen that is Eiko's insect nerd friend, to it's scrappy production punching way above it's own weight, Star Virgin oozes charm all over.
Great fun all around!

My favourite shots are all the ones where they used action figures as stand-ins for the actors. Every movie should be doing that all the time"

Watched Mezzo Forte!
my Mezzo Forte review

"Man, I feel like Yasuomi Umetsu made a game of trying to gross out even those who could handle Kite with this one.
At the very least Mezzo Forte pushed my buttons way harder and I found some of it hard to watch.
This is Kite on antidepressants running through a saturation filter, everything is cranked up in intensity, good and bad.

We get more and better animated shootouts, with everyone in the show being an absolute crack shot firing off rapidfire rounds with the most satisfying pacing I think I've ever seen.
We get more of the fun bonding time with everyone, both hero and villain, with extended scenes of characters eating or playing between action sequences that are quite cute.
And, unfortunately, we get...perhaps not more extreme...but to me at least more biting expressions of the less fun violence, sadistic and sexual. I would not blame anyone for sticking to the censored version of this one...
However (and some may consider this a spoiler so stop reading now if you mind)...

It's overall actually a lot lighter in tone than Kite! And it's ugliest scene was somewhat softened by a reveal later in the episode.

Overall, Kite is still the best by a decent margin, nothing can beat it on vibes, but if you liked it this is well worth a watch imo.

I must absolutely insist, much like with Kite, if you want to watch the uncensored version:
Viewer discretion EXTREMELY advised"
