The Dewoitine D.520, one of the lesser-known aircraft we see in The Red Cross Letters. It had an all-metal fuselage powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Y engine. It was used by the Vichy French in Africa and it's involved in the incident over the sea on the coast of Haifa, later in RCL. #aviationhistory

One of The Few. South African boy Albert Gerald Lewis, callsign Zulu. Albert flew Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain, was shot down and suffered severe burns in his face and hands. He married an English girl and later came home to South Africa where he became an influential farming figure #history

De Havilland Canada-built Mosquito B. Mk 25. Like many DHC Mosquitoes, KA424 was flown across the Atlantic to serve in RAF Bomber Command. Seen here in Canada prior to delivery, with the port Merlin engine running, she flew with No 608 & 162 Sqns. She survived, but force-landed in Norway in 1945 🛩️⚔️📍

Canadian-built Mosquito B.XXV, KB424, seen here in Canada, prior to its delivery flight to the UK. The port engine is running, and there are two persons standing on top of the aircraft (neither in uniform). This aircraft was built at the DHC plant in Toronto, Ontario, and is seen against a backdrop of blue sky and fluffy clouds. The aircraft is seen in standard RAF camouflage colours and carrying just its serial number (which is correct) although a few Canadian machines carried a dedication, painted on each side of the nose. It served with No 608 Auxiliary Air Force, as part of RAF Bomber Command's Light Night Striking Force; No 608 was the only Auxiliary Squadron to be part of the LNSF. KA424 must have been delivered to N0 608 sometime after October 1944, when the Squadron moved to RAF Downham Market. KA424 didn't say with 608 for long as she was recorded as being with No 162 Sqn, RAF shortly after it was reformed at RAF Bourn, as part of the LNSF. On 20th June, 1945, shortly after VE Day (8th May 1945) KA424 was programmed to undertake a training sortie from RAF Blackbushe, Hampshire, piloted by Flt Lt James Richards, DFC, RAFVR and his navigator Fg Off Joseph Kilpatrick, DFC, RAFVR. Unfortunately, they suffered a port engine failure and had to make a forced landing at Royal Norwegian Air Force Station Gardermoen in Oslo, Norway. Both crew suffered minor injuries.
