Paul Moody on The Stepford Wives — The wide angle | Rorotoko
Betty Friedan called it a rip-off of the women's movement, and that verdict has shaped fifty years of argument about the film — as has a screenwriter's famously catty complaint about the director casting his own wife. Newly opened archives in Beverly Hills, London and New York tell a different story about who actually made the thing. Authorship here is messier, and far more female, than the myth allows.
