Hungarian 'világ' means *world* and is also the root for *bright*/*clear* ('világos'). If Wiktionary is to be believed, it took the same path. Thanks! I never noticed this connection.

That is a beautiful Mary. I'm curious whether you're going to post *that other* Mary by Fouquet.

Visigoths or Ostrogoths? Or maybe Vandals?

’jullie’ (plural ‘you’) is actually a recent-ish (17th century) word, originally from ‘je lui’: ‘you guys’.

Trouwens, 'csupasz' is heel grappig: meer 'haarloos' dan 'bloot'. Normaal zou je 'meztelen' gebruiken.

Wat een prachtig stukje. Ik kan me nog herinneren hoe mijn (Hongaarse) moeder oudere kennissen had die in 1956 als kinderen naar Nederland kwamen. Sommigen spraken Hongaars met een sterk accent, sommigen helemaal geen Hongaars meer. Dat zal ook wel aan de leeftijd hebben gelegen.

i suppose the ‘noon’ meaning do midi (media diae?) came first. That’s like in Hungarian where ‘dél’ is both South and noon. Also, ‘észak’ is North and night, ‘kelet’ is East and rising, ‘nyugat’ is West and resting (All approximate: the spellings are slightly different for some of the meanings)

Borrowings from Old English are unusual, aren’t they? How do we know it’s not borrowed through the more common Frankish?

It is much more specific than that: the UK is the only European country with a widespread anti-European xenophobia problem. Its very right-wing press informs - through their shared language - the US discourse on Europe and the EU. That discourse is then picked up in Moscow.

‘Deutschland 83’ is about Able Archer and is pretty good in its depiction of East and West Germany around that time.

Slackware 3, I believe, with kernel 1.2 in ’94 or ‘95. Not long after that I ordered a cd from Walnut Creek CDROMs, with redhat linux. It was the first thing I bought on the internet and I was surprised to see it actually arrive.
