Interesting session today. I feel like I’m back to learning a lot very quickly

It’s far from perfect but in some of them I managed to get the downward-pointing wedge on the left; in some I managed to get the more difficult upward-pointing wedge on the right with continuous edges; and in some I managed to get a very slight frown curve, very slightly tilted upward to the right

I didn’t come close to getting the corner right on this one but the scoop/hook looks good on a few of them

I just felt like I was learning a lot in the process of practicing 十. Mostly about balancing stroke width and character position. And some of the stroke entries/exits look okay

Unlike the Adobe Kaiti characters I’ve been copying before, these images are facsimiles of brushstrokes and I’m finding it much easier to learn from them

Also I loaded up my brush with a ton of ink and I think it helped! It’s more of a pain to clean, and it probably won’t last as long because I don’t know how to get all the ink out of the bases of the fibers, but it’s worth it

Starting to get a little frustrated. But I’m breathing through it

日 written in digital kaishu style with dotted guide lines. Note the wedge at the start of the first vertical stroke; how that stroke thickens at the bottom; the way the corner at the top right flares out on the outside, with a wedge on top and to the right, but rounded on the inside; the way the following vertical stroke thickens uniformly as it goes down from there; the way the two horizontal strokes tilt up slightly; and the way the lower horizontal stroke is slightly thicker on the right end; but how all strokes have even curves around all the ends, no points anywhere (except the small hook at the bottom right). Basically I failed to capture all these details, 72 times in a row

Very similar details. The big differences here are the left falling vertical stroke, gracefully bending from vertical near the top to ~45º near the bottom; and the big hook at the bottom right, bent slightly upward, even on the inside, but with nearly straight edges on both sides. I also failed to capture these details

Thus, the primary risk, as I see it, is that a lot of people who would have done a PhD in mathematics and gone on to become custodians of the mathematical tradition *will no longer wish to do so*. Those of us who have PhD students, including me, need to try as hard as we can to come up with imaginative ways for them to use their time productively (in consultation with the students themselves, obviously). Whether or not we do a good job with that could make a huge difference to the future of mathematics. A related risk is that the perception among policy-makers will be that mathematicians are no longer needed and that funding will become much harder to come by: *we urgently need to come up with good ways of explaining the value of having a large pool of human mathematical experts*, even if it is no longer part of their role to find new proofs of theorems.

A couple of notes
1. The long vertical strokes at the left aren’t part of every syllable, only the ones with i, ii, e, ei, ai, or oi
2. Consonant clusters are typically written left to right, rather than stacked vertically (see ks in meilbaaks)
3. Similarly, I try to line up my syllables horizontally even if it means blank space at the start of a word
4. It looks like you left out a word or two. I filled in one you might have meant to include, but it’s tough to be sure. This is super common when learning new scripts
5. Officially the spelling of understood has d at the end of the first syllable, rather than the start of the second. This kind of misspelling is, I really mean this, very minor. There are a few words where misplacing a syllable boundary could be genuinely confusing, but I would never expect someone just learning the letters to be aware of how syllable boundaries are placed (it’s unfortunately kind of complicated). Just pointing out why I wrote something differently than you did here

This is such a small thing but I noticed yesterday if I slow down the pen slightly at the ends of long strokes instead of dashing them away while lifting the pen they come out looking crisper, straighter, and more balanced

Honestly I think the cursive r kind of fucks, even if the overall geometric style primes my eye against it. But this stroke is very inelegant

This is a good idea. That was the thinking behind starting with 一 instead of like 永. I focused on line thickness more than entry and exit for the second round and it’s going better
