Initially, humility feels like war. Until it becomes a white flag. And then you begin to see that it’s how you become who you were created to be.

Accepting what we can’t change is one of the ways the Lord changes us. But it’s ok to— Grieve what was Grieve what never was And hope for the good that can only come because there was any grief to begin with.

Whatever your thoughts as they relate to K. Lamar’s music, something emerged on Sun night that we seldom see at halftime: Art In all of its beauty, mystery, & messaging, Lamar created something that demanded interpretation & explanation. A rare exception.

A few things preachers might neglect to pray before they preach: -Heartbrokenness: being deeply aware of your people’s humanity -Discernment: being sensitive to the mood of the text and the mood of the room -Approachability: being a pastor that people feel seen and known by

Never let a moment go by that you don’t pause and wonder about the ways God may be working. You may not know, but you will be reminded anew that you are known.

Gratitude is— An imaginative act A creative expression A collaborative experience It’s how we say “wow!” and “no way!” to God.

When life doesn’t turn out the way you hoped. Some thoughts— -It is good to acknowledge the dreams that never came true -It is good to grieve all that never was -It is good to be sad about things that were lost Also…. It is good to let gratitude have a place.

Early morning journey to Ohio where I’ll be speaking to @sendnetwork pastors and spending time with Harbor Network leaders in the Cleveland area. It’s -1 degrees, but the horizon looks pink and warm, so I’m just going to pretend I live in the south today.

I want to start talking about it now— I have a new book coming out this fall called “In the Morning You Hear My Voice.” What is it? 365 poetic prayers & reflections. This has been years in the making, so thx to @BHpub for their support of this very artistic & abstract work!

My sermon for tomorrow is titled “An Invitation To Rest” from Genesis 2:1-3. Practicing sabbath rest is not simply “not doing anything.” It’s about taking a day to entrust the things we do to the Lord so that they don’t undo us. I’d say that’s doing quite a bit.

The love and forgiveness of Christ means 1. You can begin again 2. You can be whole again 3. You can trust again 4. You can be hopeful again Christ has made all the good “agains” possible.

I was doing some light Christmas shopping when I stumbled onto a small cafe. They had just closed, but the owner invited me in & brought me some bread & soup. Turns out she lives in our neighborhood! She introduced me to her very nice husband! She told me all kinds of nice stories! All kinds.

Pastors feel unsettled on Sundays because they are typically unhappy w/ the content of their sermon. But sermons are not the only “content” a pastor delivers on Sunday. -Physical presence -Spiritual awareness -Emotional availability Let’s not undervalue the unrehearsed things.

In a season of reflection, we wonder at the things that didn’t work out. We begin the sentence with “But I thought…” And what we’re left with is what we’re left with. Or is it? Maybe we’re left with the thing we didn’t hope for, but was given to us to make us more hopeful.

I walked into my coffee shop this morning, and was greeted by a group of older men gathered around a table. They sang a Christmas hymn, held hands, prayed, and then sang another hymn. All I could think was… How beautiful, and how deeply I have longed for something like this.

Last night @missymrtn and I played the “if you had 3 wishes what would they be” game. Me: I’d wish for blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and blah. Melissa: The only wish you truly need granted is contentment. And that was the end of the game.
