I always crack up at this very visible extra in FONG SAI YUK. He’s just as good as the sweeper whose broom never touches the ground in QUANTUM OF SOLACE. You don’t need a 4K transfer to spot him; he’s front and center during the finale.

I watched a Hong Kong classic in 4K and saw things in it I’ve never seen before: acne, stunt doubles, and wires.

SECRET: A HIDDEN SCORE (2024) is a poignant Japanese remake of the Taiwanese original that starred Jay Chou & Gwei Lun-mei. The new one has an ending that is more logically consistent, but I kinda preferred the over-the-top, “don’t think too hard about it” climax of the 2007 film.

The audio version of my essay, “Why I Teach THE CATCHER IN THE RYE” is available for a listen! Now, I don’t exactly have a podcast-friendly recording environment or sound equipment, but I think it turned out okay! Anyway…

New today on the site: @roninonempty.bsky.social on TONY TAKITANI, Jun Ichikawa's adaptation of a Haruki Murakami story, "the inexplicable compulsion to collect things," and "what we do when the people we love, the ones who once imbued these material objects with meaning, are no longer with us?"
