Democrats are in denial. Neither mass protests nor lawsuits will stop ICE. It has virtually unlimited funds, support of a rubber-stamp Congress, and strategic direction by a bitter, determined clique around Trump.

Trump identifies with authoritarian leaders, esp Putin. He shares their worldview and aspires to be one of them. For such authoritarians—as Ben-Ghiat points out—democracies are the problem. Trump wants to remake the US into an authoritarian regime, so it won't be a problem, and he can join the club.

Democratic rank-and-file want performative politics to provide them a much-needed catharsis. But one thing is clear to me. The economy is tanking, and voters are pinning it on Trump. A government shutdown facilitated by the Democrats would muddle the one issue that can pull Trump down.

Repubs propose $4.5 trillion in tax cuts that go mainly to wealthy, paid by $1.5 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, education and other programs that help average Americans. Dems are flailing; they can’t see beyond beltway. Why not a national media campaign denouncing this cynical budget proposal?

For years, I’ve argued that Trump is a cult leader. If he loses credibility, the cult fever will break, and his followers drift away. But readers replied, “MAGA base will never change.” Well, some are now changing, expressing remorse for supporting Trump. Maybe there’s hope for democracy after all.

Dems have long struggled with messaging. Painting Trump as enemy of working class and democracy has fallen on deaf ears. But something fundamental has changed. Voters can now see for themselves what Trump cares about. And Musk has become the icon for his self-aggrandizement. tinyurl.com/5feaxwmm

When food and gas prices spike, when vaccines are no longer available, or special ed is dropped at school, voters will become angry and disillusioned. Party labels will become less important. Democrats must make sure voters know who is responsible, starting now with constituent town halls.

Senate Dems held floor all night to protest one cabinet nomination, delayed another for a week. Senate Dems need new, dynamic leader who, like House counterpart, understands solution to current crisis does not lie in DC, but with American people, and who'll send members home to talk w/ constituents.

1/2 Trump is taking a wrecking ball to our govt. How can he be stopped? The courts are slow and will probably be ignored by Trump. What’s worked in other countries are daily mass protests. Such protests will erupt if Trump continues to overstep, e.g. by closing Educ Dept or tampering with SS pmts..

Elon Musk now has access to govt paymt systems used to deliver SS & Medicare benefits, among others. He not only has access, but control too. This gives him & Trump power to cut off funds selectively to any dissident individual or group they want to control or punish. This is path to a police state.
