You can also use oil sticks which are oil paint and do cure. They're usually pretty big though and take some practice. I've started using them and it really speeds up the painting process.

Technically the oil eventually cures but because the medium is wax they'll always remain kind of tacky. You can use a oil pastel fixative but I've only had marginal results with that. A lot of combo painters don't even bother with the fixative or glass and just inform their customers how it works.

Spar. Marine quality is the best but it sure is expensive. I used to primarily use the Minwax brand. Remember the thing about Spar Varnish is the UV radiation in the sunlight breaks it down over time. So it requires constant upkeep depending on how much sunlight the furniture gets. Just like a boat.

A lot of the log furniture ended up on people's porches. Those all get exterior spa varnish. All the Cabinetry normally ends up inside.
