The Rolling Stones and ‘Little Baby’ (1995): How They Revisited a Howlin’ Wolf Classic
'Little Baby' hardly sounds like the sort of song that would send the Rolling Stones scrambling for a studio microphone, but blues has a funny way of pulling them back in. Recorded in Tokyo in 1995, their version of Willie Dixon’s song finds Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts settling into a surprisingly intimate groove rather than trying to turn the track into a stadium-sized Stones workout. There’s a Howlin’ Wolf connection, some beautifully understated playing, a Ray Charles-flavored piano touch, and one particularly intriguing detail: Keith Richards said they nailed it in a single take. Apparently, sometimes the Stones really did know when to stop.
