One time some guys came to my apartment to take over the lease and they put a knife in my face, stole my key, and kicked me out. I think people today are spooked by liminal spaces because of the pandemic, but they were always a refuge for me. Gay, autistic, furry, I only felt safe in places everyone else cleared out of and no one else stayed in. Lonely as I am, I only ever feel "safe" by myself.

25 years ago, I was sitting in study hall with Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and an assortment of Christians, from Syriac Orthodox to Southern Baptist. Typical "Smart Kids" school down south. I was never in their cliques, but none of 'em ever trusted each other again. That's the legacy of 9/11 for me.
