A lot of times it boils down to "I like this sculpt/face edit but the maker only made it available to male au ra and viera even though it's clearly a human or elezen."

I think it heavily depends on a few too many things. Does the person know how to mod? Can they mod faces? Do they know how to weight things? So on and so forth. So while there's a part of the community that does it for more specific reasons, the vast majority does it because of availability.

There's a lot of Castanic fits I would love to port to XIV but most of the Tera resources out there only care for the female characters 😔

I started Ul'dah back in 1.0 and it was nice, then I proceeded to do the other 2 out of curiosity and I do think the Limsa opening is a bit more epic than the other 2. The tone of it is a bit more intense, and they even nod that whole opening during the first sections of Stormblood and Dawntrail.

Like if we really dig about it and think of XIV with the lenses of "if this was a mobile game with a mascot and said mascot was the app icon", it would be either a Moogle or Y'shtola's face right there and nobody can convince me otherwise.

tbh you are right on the nose because it really only makes sense for it to be a character you meet early in the game. But Thancred is too elusive on both presence and screen time before Shadowbringers, and Yda/Papalymo... well. LOL Y'shtola really is the only option because Meteor doesn't exist.
