We can also reveal that he was one of the witnesses who spoke to ITV News anonymously, helping us to identify these mass grave sites in Syria in 2022. www.itv.com/news/2023-08...

Mohammad Afif Naifeh dug thousands of graves between 2011/18, burying bodies which were brought to secret burial sites in refrigerator lorries. He fled Syria and gave evidence which led to the prosecution of regime officials.

He was a government administrator at the Public Burial Office in Damascus—until the day he was summoned to his manager’s office and handed a new assignment: to dig graves for Assad’s victims. He was given a shovel—and no real choice. This is his story: www.itv.com/news/2025-04...

Unmasked: For years, he was a faceless witness—known only as The Gravedigger. His voice never heard, his identity hidden. From behind a mask, a man who played a small part in Syria’s killing machine, played a bigger role trying to bring it to justice.

As German authorities work to understand what motivated last night’s attack, they’ll likely be paying close attention to the suspect’s apparent support for some of the loudest voices on Twitter who were quick to draw conclusions. Investigation continues.

One-word labels don’t always capture today’s terrorism landscape. Evidence that more extremists are being driven by a mix of ideologies, rooted in reactionary and anti-liberal politics - or conspiracy theories and incel ideology. Many extremists are being classed as “mixed, unclear, or unstable”.

In the aftermath of an attack, there’s a rush to label suspects. With echoes of a 2016 Islamist attack at a Xmas market in Berlin, that same label was seized on last night. Journalists were accused of being too afraid to state the obvious, Twitter came to its own conclusion.

For weeks the authorities in Germany have been warning about the risk of Islamist attacks at Christmas markets. The suspect in last night’s attack appears to have been an anti-Islam activist who shared his support for AfD online.

What motivated the Christmas market attack in Magdeburg is still unclear. But the suspect, a doctor from Saudi Arabia who has lived in Germany since 2006 - was a supporter of AfD, Elon Musk, and ‘Tommy Robinson’ according to his social media posts and reporting by @fschmid.bsky.social

Assad joins the displacement crisis he co-created - now in Moscow, he’s one of 12million Syrians moved from their homes. I’m calling + messaging Syrians, in the country and abroad. Huge optimism. Even for those with fears about what happens next, the surprise rebel advance shows anything’s possible

Rebels seize Damascus and topple the Assad regime after a lightning rebel offensive against the Syrian dictator who had destroyed cities and killed hundreds of thousands of citizens to stay in power. Inmates have been freed from slaughterhouse prisons like Sednaya, and his palace has been taken over

Russia striking hospitals in Syria. Tragic, familiar. But this time it follows a surprise surge which allowed militants to snap selfies at the citadel in Aleppo. Unclear how next few days play out as Assad fights to survive - but every option involves humanitarian crisis and a movement of people.
