A recent study says most people agree: communities shouldn't pay for climate damages. The corporations responsible should. #MakePollutersPay Read more: oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2026/09/03/o...
Illustration of a billionaire Big Oil executive dressed in a business suit holding a money bag on the shore of a body of water with a powerplant and oil rig in the background. Overlayed on top is a quote from the Oregon Capital Chronical that says "'Most of my colleagues in both parties, directly or indirectly, get funding from [Oil lobby groups] who come in and say the sky is going to fall if we implement this,' Golden said. 'I think what legislators need to continually hear is that if you are saying 'no' to polluter pays, you are saying 'yes' to your constituents paying. There's not a third choice.'"Illustration in pink ink on a bright yellow background of a group of community members making art that says 'Make Polluters Pay'. Handwritten pink text says 'When we organize, we can reqrite the rules and build something more honest, and more prepared for the future we deserve." Overlayed is a quote from the Oregon Capital Chronical newspaper that says "[Researchers] found that supporters of climate Superfunds dominated public hearings about the proposals, and the ratio of support to opposition was roughly 3:1 in nearly every state. California and Oregon saw more than twice the amount of testimony in favor of the climate superfund bills as any other state."Black illustration on a highlighter yellow background of people holding protest signs and chanting. 🦀 What happens in Coos Bay affects the rest of Oregon: "It's critical that Portland and other cities pressure our representatives for investments that make our communities healthier, not one that will bring unnecessary congestion through our regions." #CommunityNotContainers #NoPCIP
Text screen shot from the Willamette Week: "What happens in Coos Bay Could slow Portland traffic: Coos Bay? Who cares? What happens in Coos Bay stays in Coos Bay...or so I thought. But if the governor and congressional delegation have their way, the Port of coos Bay will contribute to additional rail and traffic congestion from Eugene gto Portland by building the Pacific Coast Intermodal Port (PCIP).Screen shot of text from the Willamette Week: "Railed" [WW, May 20] described the rail congestion problems north of Brooklyn Yard. The Union Pacific/Norfolk Southern merger will increase Portland rail traffic by 22%. The increase from PCIP containers does not appear to be included in this estimate, but its local impact should be on Portland's radar."Screenshot from Willamette Week: "The PCIP is a $2.3 billion proposal to move containers from Coos Bay to Eugene on double-stacked 1.7-mile long trainns - six round trips per day. While PCIP planners have not specified how these trains would move from Eugene to Portland, rail experts say UP is the most likely carrier. That means additional construction, train crossings, traffic congestion and Amtrak delays in Eugene, Salem, Woodburn and Portland.Screenshot of Willamette Week Text: "The title of Nigel Jaquiss' article says it all: "Oregon's leading Politicians Want to Bet Billions of Dollars on a New Shipping Terminal. Ciritics Say it's a Costly Mistake". Proponents include both US senators, Rep Val Hoyle and Gov Kotek. Whether Coos County residents actually support the project appears to be irrelevant. It's critical that Portland and other cities pressure our representatives for investments that make our communities healthier, not one that will bring unnecessary congestion through our regions.

Young people didn't cause the climate crisis, but they damn sure know who did. They're demanding elected officials hold fossil fuel corporations accountable. With the Climate Resilience Superfund bill in Oregon, lawmakers choose who pays for resilience and recovery. Us or the Polluters. #orleg

20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, killing over 1800 people and displacing over 1.5 million, many of whom were never able to return. So one more time for all the people in the back: there is no climate justice without racial & economic justice. #ClimateSky More in ALT TXT.
2 images of Hurricane Katrina survivors that circulated widely in the media in August 2005 and became a classic example of narrative power and framing.

CAPTION: Two residents wade through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store after Hurricane Katrina came through the area in New Orleans, Louisiana.

They appear to be doing the same thing to try and survive in the midst of a disaster. Notice anything different between them? Yep. You got it. The color of their skin.

Great example of how racism operates in media coverage. These two different frames on the same actions to survive in the midst of adversity have very significant consequences.

If they saying you are “finding” they send the National Guard to save you but if you are “looting” they send the National Guard to shoot you. Framing is often a matter of life and death.
