A survivor of sexual abuse has expressed her outrage at Bridget Phillipson after accusing Reform UK and the Tories of "weaponising" violence against women in an attempt to "point score". Speaking to GB News, survivor Fiona Goddard argued the Left were responsible for "covering up" issues including the grooming gangs scandal and the abuse of Britain's women. ### Ms Phillipson has accused Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch of "weaponising violence against women for political point scoring". The Women and Equalities Minister has claimed Reform and the Tories "only talk about women's safety when it comes to immigration, rather than tackling the wider problem". ### TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say ### Her comments come as she prepares to open Labour's women's conference in Liverpool today, days after launching a new task force to tackle misogyny. Hitting back at the remarks, Ms Goddard told GB News that making such accusations against Reform and the Tories is "dangerous". She said: "I think Bridget was involved in the Home Affairs Select Committee that looked into the grooming gangs. She knows how badly we were failed, she knows the issues that were presented. But yet she still chooses to use language like weaponising it for the right of weaponising it. "I think it's actually quite dangerous, and the people that it actually impacts are the victims, because it gives people another layer to dismiss certain victims if their abusers or their abuse doesn't fit the narrative." ### ### ### Ms Goddard accused the Left-wing parties of "covering up" the abuse suffered by women for so many years. She argued: "What she needs to realise is right-leaning parties are bringing it up because the Left never did. "The Left caused the issue, the Left covered it up, and it is now down to right-wing parties to raise the issue. If they weren't raising it, we would still be completely dismissed altogether." I think that's a very dangerous position. You can't be selective when it comes to women and girls safety. "You've got to be looking at all issues and how you can correct it all, not just the ones that fit your narrative. And I think by pushing and dismissing what the right-leaning parties are saying now, that's just adding to the selective-ness." Ms Goddard added: "People are talking about it because the justice was withheld and we weren't just abused by the abusers, we were abused by the institutions, so that is why it's brought up. "But yeah, the Left over and over again, they don't want to accept it, they don't want to admit it, they don't want to face up to it. It will affect their votes, it will affect their policies and they know they caused it." ### ### ### Asked what message she has for Ms Phillipson directly, Ms Goddard concluded that it is a "failure on their part" for not listening to victims of abuse in the first place. She said: "We're the ones having to live it, and we're having to shout extra loud just to be acknowledged. That's not weaponising, that's showing failure on their part for not listening. "We shouldn't have to shout, we shouldn't have to have political parties representing not bringing it up, because it should have been dealt with all along. The grooming and rape gangs, which have terrorised so many towns and cities in this country, are responsible for some of the most horrific crimes in this country’s history. For decades, gangs of men – the majority of whom were from Pakistan or of Pakistani heritage, in the cases that we know about in detail – raped, abused and trafficked thousands of children, the majority of whom were white working-class girls. ### These gangs preyed upon the vulnerable in dozens of towns and cities across the country. In some places, these gangs may continue to operate. ### TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say ### And for decades, that horrific reality was ignored because people in positions of power were scared of confronting the uncomfortable truth about who was committing these crimes and who their victims were. Among police officers, council officials and care home staff, fears about being called racist trumped the duty of care that they owed to these girls. The result was one of the most widespread and shocking cover-ups in our history. Last year, the Government was forced to hold a proper national inquiry into these horrendous crimes. ### ### ### The inquiry’s work is ongoing, and we hope that it will finally uncover the full truth about the grooming gang horrors. The survivors, whistleblowers, journalists, activists and researchers who helped to secure that inquiry were incredibly brave, and we owe them an unbelievable debt of gratitude. But in the meantime, new independent research, published as part of The Network Map project, has revealed the extent to which the grooming gangs were, and are, closely linked to national networks of organised criminals. They know just how generous Labour will be - Katie Lam ### ### The findings of that research are truly horrific; I cannot encourage you enough to go away and read them for yourself. But three trends stand out as particularly important. The first is the extent to which these gangs operated as part of a nationwide web. These were not isolated incidents. ### ### Gangs of rapists collaborated with one another to traffic and transport their victims across the country – as the testimony of many grooming gang survivors confirms. The second is the extent to which these gangs often operated along family lines. This includes cases like those of the Ilyas brothers, three men who groomed girls as young as 12 years old in the Sheffield area between 2004 and 2008. The fact that many of these gangs included brothers and cousins working together to carry out the most horrific abuse must invite questions about the cultural factors that led to these crimes, and the role that close-knit families or clans played in facilitating them. ### ### The third takeaway is the extent to which these abusers were linked to organised crime networks, particularly those in the drugs trade and those operating protection rackets. These include some of the abusers who targeted Bradford survivor Fiona Goddard. Parvaze Ahmed, one of Fiona’s abusers, was a known drug dealer and the brother-in-law of so-called “drugs baron” Khalid Malik. These links to organised crime undoubtedly enabled these men to coerce, intimidate and traffic their victims. ### ### As the national inquiry into grooming gangs continues its work, it must investigate the link between these horrific crimes and organised criminal gangs. Its recommendations must reflect the reality that these men used their relationships with criminal gangs to coerce, abuse and traffic their victims. For far too long, victims and the public have been denied the full facts about why these crimes happened and why they were allowed to go on for so long. We now deserve the full, uncomfortable truth. ### **Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter**

I have spent years reporting on Britain’s grooming gangs scandal. I have travelled around the country, speaking to survivors about the horrific abuse they endured, as well as whistleblowers, social workers, campaigners and people who have spent years trying to force the authorities to confront what happened. Central to our GB News reporting has been showing that this was never about isolated gangs, but an interconnected network of offending. New evidence produced by independent researchers for The Network Map has shown just how widespread it is. ### The data has identified over 100 links between grooming gang perpetrators and other violent or organised criminals. Over 100. Just consider that for a moment. And the connections stretch into drug dealing, protection rackets and other forms of serious criminality. The research has also begun to map how perpetrators and victims moved between different parts of the country, revealing a network that stretches from Plymouth to Dundee. Because for years, there has been a tendency to talk about grooming gangs as though each town represents a separate scandal: Rotherham here, Rochdale there, Telford somewhere else, Bradford somewhere else again. But the more I have investigated this story, the harder that explanation has become to sustain. What I have found repeatedly is connection. People connected to people. Criminals connected to criminals. Victims moved from one place to another. Perpetrators with links beyond the immediate group carrying out the sexual abuse. And now we have research which attempts to put some of those connections on a map. The scale is staggering. ### ### ### More than 1,000 people, gangs, families, establishments and other notable individuals are included in the research. The systematic assembly of the connections should now force an understanding of just how extensive these gangs may be. And we should be clear about what this does, and does not, prove. It does not mean every person connected to a grooming gang perpetrator is themselves guilty of a crime. Nor does it mean every grooming gang formed part of one giant nationwide organisation. But it does provide further evidence that we should stop thinking about this as a collection of completely disconnected local scandals. The evidence points towards something much more complicated: overlapping networks of perpetrators, criminals, families, gangs and associates, with some individuals involved in multiple forms of serious offending. For years, victims were failed because authorities looked at pieces of the problem rather than the whole. A girl was abused. A complaint was made. A social worker had concerns. A police officer encountered a suspect. Somewhere else, another girl was being exploited by someone connected to the same wider criminal world. But the dots were too often not joined. I have heard repeatedly from people inside the system about information that was not shared, warnings that did not lead to action and institutions that were reluctant to confront what was happening. Baroness Casey’s national audit documented serious and repeated failures in protecting children from group-based sexual exploitation. The statutory Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs is now underway, with national accountability hearings and local investigations planned. ### ### That inquiry has an enormous responsibility, and GB News will continue to bring you every detail of it. It must not simply ask what happened in individual towns. It must ask how these networks operated, how information moved, or failed to move, between agencies and across geographical boundaries, and whether authorities understood the connections between organised sexual exploitation and other forms of organised crime. Because after everything I have seen, I am no longer surprised that the scandal was bigger than we were originally told. ### ### These figures are a reminder that we may still be nowhere near the full reality. We must keep fighting to expose the truth. Here is the question I’m asking today: how do these networks manage such a high degree of trust to offend and reoffend together, time and time again? How do they rely on each other to traffic victims and drugs and share their abuse among friends, family and criminal associates? I’ll have an answer for you soon.
