We all find it hard to make good software analogies when explaining to a non-software minded person. Some analogies are good for a while but then they reach their limit. Software is hard to explain. It’s its own thing.

That’s fair. I consider vertical slices a clear winner. However, having had 8 developer jobs to date, developers very rarely sat in a meeting with a client. We’ve fed off the findings of manager types. They give us the context for stories. It’s so hard to find an environment that doesn’t do that.

Okay. So the idea is to focus on creating work items representing the steps on a flow diagram. When one step branches out then there’s a new work item for each branch. Who’s talking to the user/customer to sketch this flow diagram and how can it be tightened up as work goes on?

How small is small enough? Going down to minute technical details would waste the discussion time. Yet I often feel that “capturing” the requirements and writing: “As an X; I want Y; So that Z” With: “Given X; When Y; Then Z” (x 5) is often too vague. But I agree story points are bunk.

I lived in Hungary for a while. That’s an interesting one. The language is perfectly phonetic: e is like the e in “egg” é is like the a in “game” a is like the a in “arm” á is like the a in “cat” o is like the o in “hot” ó is like the o in “go” …etc. Every letter has an undisputed sound. 😄

How come not the more common languages like Spanish or French? They just didn’t really interest you?

That would be impressive! How many languages do know or partially know? You seem like a really committed language enthusiast, if that’s fair to say 🙂

You think it’s fine to bikeshed. I don’t think it’s fine at all. My mate thinks it’s mostly okay. My other mate thinks it’s generally bad. We’re all so busy disagreeing, we’re getting nothing done. See what you’ve done here?! 😉😂

Caffeine and video clips from films that inspire you. Granted, it is a shame I have to drink a double espresso and watch half of Gladiator just to stand up and put some clothes in the washing machine.

Do any “senior software engineers” or “software architects” know how to engineer or architect software? They’re high up in the company, but all their code from years ago is causing the tech debt problems. Years spent in a company doesn’t make you good. It makes you “senior”. There’s a difference.

A therapist is never late. Nor are they early. They arrive exactly when they mean to… … which is usually a little bit late.

There’s no evidence we can make decisions. That would mean controlling the electrons in our brain. We don’t control electrons. We don’t control thoughts. But in terms of evolution, the individuals who believed they had free will survived. We likely don’t have free will but feel very much like we do.

I used to think software could be written in a definitive, “perfect” way. Just use the right patterns. But I realised it’s all about modelling things in a human way. And hide the complexity. This means trade-offs everywhere and you have to make the best of what you’ve got. Unsatisfying but true.

Maybe it’s a metaphor that you’ve just created. The cold interior needs attention. The world, on the other hand already has a very hot core. Okay, maybe I’m getting too deep 😂

I think the future sounds pretty cool. We automate to make our lives easier. But a lot of folks might just never do anything and then lose a sense of purpose.

Does “whack” mean good or bad? I’ve heard the phrase “crack is whack” which I think is saying it’s bad.

When all of production and delivery is fully mechanised, you’ll never have to leave your house. Solar powered farming machines working by GPS, taking their crops for automated processing, then unmanned vehicles making free delivery to all houses in the area, on demand.

I failed a job interview technical test relating to Domain Driven Design because I used too much abstraction while covering money currency types. To be fair, I over complicated it. Lesson learned: keep all that stuff simple, one big-decimal value object, and in one domain service.

It’s a bit like going from Event Sourcing back to traditional “write over the existing record” database style. The collective history of events has more meaning than a record that only reflects its most recent state. Not to say all mistakes need to be recorded.

I think that just breaks the whole analogy down to nothing useful. Just say it fully literally: “Everyone is different and goes through things in their own way. Don’t be nasty to them. Try to understand their situation.” 🤷‍♂️❤️

If I understand it, US industry now needs to upscale to supply demand. They’ll hike prices first, then seek investment. Citizens won’t afford higher prices. US investors won’t have the money to invest. Deadlock may lead to a crash. The Gov will seek easy resources to subsidise businesses. Thus, war.

Robert Martin talks about this in his book Clean Architecture. He hints at OOP being a more convenient way of doing things you would do anyway. It cuts away much of the overhead for achieving encapsulation and polymorphism. It’s not impossible otherwise, but easier with OOP.

Java is/was a phenomenon. Not perfect but in my opinion has been a great intermediate between low-level C and trendy interpreted languages (Ruby, Python, PHP…) It’s true you can write awful software in any language but Java makes it a bit less likely. What was it that Oracle did? Something silly?

I wholeheartedly agree. A manager in an agile format is really a team servant who knows how to listen and supply the team with what they need. This applies to hiring new members, purchasing useful tools and contacting the client for clarified information, among other things.

Teamwork makes the dream work… Along with good architecture, agility, frequent communication (“Yes chef!”), domain driven thinking, a ton of collective experience, knowledge sharing and a lot of passion. But 10x developers? Nah. That’s just over-reliance on one point of failure.

Better Controllers: - Controller <- Inject UseCase + Presenter - Controller handles/scrapes/validates request - Creates a Command DTO - Invokes UseCase with DTO - Presenter <- Inject Repositories + View renderer - Controller invokes Presenter - Controller sends output to client

Reading/researching is a better fast-track. I agree with you in the sense that experience counts. We don’t always face all situations by reading or listening to others. But wisdom is not making the mistakes yourself, rather it’s learning from those who went before you.

Laws and constitutions are just words on paper. Their virtues rely on the willingness of enforcers (police, armed forces and judges) to uphold the words, along with the good nature present in all people. Weakened personal values or corrupted enforcers unlock the door, allowing tyranny to walk in.
