Finally saw “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” - it’s monumental. The moving tenderness between Crowe and Bettany. It has the scale of an epic, but the soul of a chamber piece. It’s really about humans trying to maintain some kind of civilization inside this floating wooden universe.

Good god. If you’re now in your 40s and your parents got divorced when you were a little kid and now you have little kids and you watch E.T. with them let me tell you: EMOTIONS. What a completely moving, absolute achievement that film is. Good lord I don’t remember it being this good.

Hot take: Ridley Scott is not good at basic storytelling. Blade Runner is my favourite film. Still, very clunky storytelling. And throughout his career: clunk. He’s saved by great sense of style/scale. A great pitch. Great actors. But the storytelling is always full of holes and need re-cuts.

Re-watched A River Runs Through It last night after decades since first seeing it as a boy. My god. What a gorgeous poem of a movie. Redford…what immense heart and restraint he had behind the camera. Filled with empathy. Filled with wonder.

The TED LASSO discourse is odd and misses what’s most interesting/weird about the show. There’s lots of rage being thrown at it for being “2020 trauma medicine fluff” and too “cute”, but really it’s a show with a bizarre darkness underneath, full of damaged, delusional people.
