A very good book that pulls together themes that have been bubbling in the mind for sometime. There are some thoughts on the 'so what' and an indication of the need to awaken the magic 25pc for a tipping point for change. More sign posting on where does one go next would be good - website maybe?

Our reality is of complex systems with tipping points and understanding this is important. As a person in society our journeys are often out of our control and serendipity often wins...a poor person is not to blame equally to a rich one not being responsible for their success - humility helps.

support@bsky.app just checking the Tim Minchin accounts - there are 2 with the 'official' follow 👆. Both have same image. One is a lot less active (extra n at end of handle)?

Think it largely comes down to the economics - in this case the tech bro platforms. Movement in the EU / Brazil etc. to regulate and control them + movement away from them by user base. If EU can build valid alternatives like b-sky then there is maybe hope. Would lead to massive infighting.......

Complete drivel - "the causes of the 50-year slowdown in scientific and technological progress in the US". - hard to make progress when you put truth out to pasture.....the fear of regulation here is palpable - an entire industry built on deceit could collapse.

Love this and this is great advice for everyone and especially for those that are neurodiverse. Would also add not to worry how others might prefer your brain to work.

Gets my blood pressure up just thinking about it 😭....making payments is also very painful. Imagine being in a physical store and having to wait for a code that doesn't work as the vendor doesn't accept that card type, but having to guess why 🤬

Unconventional, unexpected and most wouldn't - but absolutely wonderful 😊

Rodders @rodders-m.bsky.social · 12/12/2024
Possibly more effective if everyone stops paying - in UK poll tax in 90s was cancelled due to such collective action. Fear is what allows this to continue - the house of cards would tumble very quickly.

It's all about abstractions - what and how information is passed between system parts. Most importantly, how features are exposed to the user - this is hard to achieve and takes experience, experiments and feedback.

A lot of government programmes also f...well don't do what they set out to do. A big issue is giving large chunks to large organisations that are not Agile themselves and becoming too large to fail. Attempts to create markets keep being effectively shutdown by lobbying - allow small to have a go!

The key I think here in it being culturally 'authoritative' - also an innate authority in having a deep voice, being tall etc. education is the best cure

One of my favourite books is 'Bullshit Jobs' by the late great David Graeber - personally I think this is a great title!

It's not tech that's dystopian as such - it's the control of the narrative. The removal of the timestamps could allow history on twitter to be rewritten to support a position. The aim of Bluesky protocol to decentralise content aims to shift the control back to the creator a bit - this helps

Let me help unpack that with RodGPT: 'I'll not use the Washington post against Musk as we have a mutual agreement at the moment and also I shat the bed before the election'

I think it should say in the clearest of terms what it does - e.g. it generates something that is pleasing but not necessarily true and not checked for accuracy.

What the story is has no concern at all, only the narrative of the one telling it and the agenda being pushed. The negative slant could have been written about a host of other stories. In this case it could be a warning shot to maintain control - we can destroy you as fast as we have made you

So is any elected official under trial not having to stand trial - if any one is above or can manipulate the law there is no real rule of law. What has changed is that this is now clear to see what we all take on trust. In UK we trust the monarch won't go rouge - food for thought I think ...

Such a visionary - I think it may be best to allow him to own his vision and the what people feel about his 30 year master plan. If I had spent 30 yrs on something I hope I wouldn't end up sh1tt1ng the bed when it happened. Prize idiot that one

I think we are collectively becoming conscious of what the problem is and therefore will start to actively act against it - this has been slow due in part to acting on emotion - so easy to get triggered and get angry - that's what divides and allows others to take control.

I saw Chris Pattern and others of his generation of politicians speak at a Uni events many years ago - I was struck and admired the depth of knowledge and experience they have (even if I didn't agree with the politics). I do wonder if it is still the case in today's sound bite world?

To be clear here I'm agreeing with your BS sentiment and saying without it there really are no arguments in favour of privatisation - it only drives profit and money to share holders - esp. when ineffective e.g. water companies

Rodders @rodders-m.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
If it's not market what exactly is going to drive efficiency and lead to lower costs / better service? I never quite understood this argument - am I missing something?

I think this might illustrate the limits of LLM AI. With no model of the world the context of the question cannot be 'understood' - can it actually lead to real world inference? Specific examples like the river crossing problem can be added, but generality will I believe be out of reach 🤔

I loved the Conclave book - Harris at his best, both gripping, well researched and thought provoking. Very much looking forward to the film with such a great cast 😃

Thanks for explaining - I thought the story seemed smelly. I read it and put myself in the same position and it felt like and honest mistake - so why would she be convicted. Surely when she turned on the phone she would just apologize and say she made a mistake

I don't know about quitting vaping, but do recognise that unnoticed inner turmoil, which somehow makes everything worse without intention - you can't even get angry at them 😡....maybe a badge would help 😄 "inner turmoil inside, please notice"

The narrative is becoming "we were not wrong about Brexit, but were provided facts by civil servants that led to false assumptions" - still ridiculous and not admitting responsibility but at least a shift from "if only Brexit had been implemented correctly...."

Really interesting - I wonder if we have all started to believe we work like a computer - rather than initiatively knowing we adapt to context. Human story telling was how teaching passed generation to generation, morphing as it gets told. Wonder what the historic literature would tell us?

It does feel different here to even early twitter - the viral tweet that accidentally harmed someones life doesn't seem as likely 🤔 - I've not yet seen a viral post here - I hope that's because at the moment the algorithm is just different. Time will tell I guess

I fear for you - they have already convinced many that they are poor due to other poor people coming from other countries. I doubt he will have much problem with a few shouts about ripping off the tax payers..... time to vote with your feet and find new homes still willing to hear you

Love to see a frame by frame capture animation - one per mth, to see how that grew - esp. the branches entering the ground! What an amazing creature!
