Happy Monday Roc Rainbow Union friends and family! Apologies for the delay, it’s been a busy workweek.

Last Tuesday we had our quarterly LGBTQ+ community council meeting with over 30 attendees representing dozens of LGBTQ+ and LGBTQ+ serving groups! Lex from the Gandhi Institute led a great Pride season feedback and recap which generated some great discussion. We talked about what we celebrated from Pride, what we can work on, and generated some great ideas for the future! We also had some great conversations about the future direction of the AIDS Memorial Garden, local health research, Trillium’s Trailblazer program, Sewgreen’s “Fit to be you Grant” for alteration/mending workshops for the LGBTQ+ community, upcoming productions of “Boys in the Band,” NGMT’s community needs assessment, LGBTQ+ sexual assault survivor programs, and much more. We haven’t yet planned out dates for 2027 council meetings so stay tuned!

Going back to Sew Green, we’re excited to partner with them for their monthly mending and alteration workshops running from October 5th to May 3rd on the first Monday of the month. From 5:30-7:30 Sewgreen volunteers will help with sewing basics, hemming, alterations, creative stitching, and mending. We’ll have location information soon.

Finally, we’re excitedly preparing for our board retreat in October. Now that we are financially sustainable we finally have a chance to do some organizational and strategic planning. We’ll be putting governance structures into place to ensure that the Rainbow Union’s organizational capacity grows strong, especially as we work to transition in the next generation of our leadership.

Yours in Pride,

Andrew Moran

Hapy Friday Rochester Rainbow Friends and Family!

Just a couple of quick updates today!

First, the Empty Closet team has been hard at work organizing for a next issue, tentatively scheduled for the fall. They’re organizing business/non-profit/organizational promotional spec sheets. We’re looking at promotions from an equity lens by offering a discount to certain LGBTQ+ owned small businesses and non-profits. We’ll keep you updated as things finalize. If you’re interested in promoting a business, non-profit, group, or event in The Empty Closet, please reach out!

Our fall LGBTQ+ community council meeting is coming up on Tuesday, September 15th from 6-8 pm. I’m waiting to hear back from a couple places to confirm location. As a reminder, these meetings are designed to bring LGBTQ+ and LGBTQ+ groups together to share information/resources, develop collaborations, support each other, address community issues, and strengthen our local LGBTQ+ ecosystem. Anyone from an LGBTQ+ run or LGBTQ+ serving organization is welcome to attend!

Yours in Pride,

Andrew Moran

Happy Friday Rochester Rainbow friends and family! As we close out Rochester’s Pride festivities, I want to reflect on this last week
Happy Friday Rochester Rainbow friends and family!

As we close out Rochester’s Pride festivities, I want to reflect on this last week. Marching down South Ave, I saw thousands of exuberant faces, allies and LGBTQ+ alike. The crowds showed a visible reminder that we are a strong and thriving community as we resist the attacks on our rights and lives. Every time we face adversity, I think of moments like those, tangible representations of our community’s strengths. Though the festival closed early, I still saw Pride in action everywhere I looked this past week, from people organizing pop-up opportunities for vendors to supporting each other with mutual aid to fundraising for our various grassroots organizations. Pride is more than one event, Pride is a representation of our community’s strength!

Thank you to everyone who was a part of Eat Out Rochester Week! Whether you were a patron, business, or just someone ordering a commemorative t-shirt, you supported our community work, center, and library! We’re still calculating the totals, but the amount is in the thousands! Thank you to the restaurants and bars that supported us: Bar Bad Ending, CRISP, Jack’s Extra Fancy, Tavos, Angelinas, The Red Fern, Equal Grounds Community Café, Flora, and Veneto (and to ImageOUt for partnering for a dinner and movie)!

Finally, for the cinephiles, next Friday July 31st we have a special screening of Morocco, starring Marlene Dietrich, at the Rainbow Union at 8 pm. Morocco was filmed before the Hays Code and thus was able to portray Marlene Dietrich in a tuxedo in a scene and kisses another woman, a film exploration of the porous borders of gender, something that would be barred from films just a few years later. Dietrich herself was bisexual, frequenting gay bars and drag balls in Weimar Republic era Berlin. Stop by and enjoy a piece of cinematic history with us!

Yours in Pride,

Andrew Moran

Sharing my remarks from the 15 Year Celebration of marriage equality in NYS, organized by Harry Bronson. Thank you to all the advocates who got us to that point!
A screenshot of a Democrat and Chronicle article with the caption "15 years after New York legalized same-sex marriage, Rochester leaders and activists gathered to celebrate the law's impact. See link below." Group of people with Harry Bronson in front of the Rainbow Seniors Roc center.I came to Rochester in 2007 from California, under the looming shadow of Prop8. It’s Rochester’s commitment to activism that has kept me here.

There are two major political events where I can remember exactly where I was: the passage of the Marriage Equality Act in New York, and the supreme court affirming marriage equality nationwide.

I remember sitting in Equal Grounds (a community hub we had thanks to Harry Bronson) in my Senior Year of College, with friends as we anxiously awaited news about the Marriage Equality Act. We broke out in cheers when it passed, due to no small effort of people like Anne Tischer (Anne would always show up at the University of Rochester to petition for marriage equality, never taking no for an answer), Bess Watts, and Harry Bronson. I remember calling my parents, only able to say “We did it” through my celebratory tears. We felt seen and accepted! It was an affirmation of equality.
Since those days, we’ve made great strides in protecting the rights of LGBTQ citizens in the U.S., however, we must remain vigilant. Our rights are continuously under attack, by demagogues wielding their power to hurt our community in a bid to advance their careers. Despite that, I have hope because of the people I see in this room, our long time activists, and our new generations of community leaders.

Our Trans, BIPOC, and Disabled siblings are currently bearing the brunt of our attacks. Our fight for justice didn’t stop at marriage equality. We must protect everyone in our community. Trans people deserve to live without fear that they will be added to the next list of Trans Day of remembrance names. Our LGBTQ+ BIPOC community needs us to center their needs. And remember, true marriage equality will only be achieved when our Disabled LGBTQ+ family members can marry without losing benefits. As Fanny Lou Hammer said, “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free!”

Today we remember 49 lost and 58 wounded victims of Pulse. Today we still face forces that attempt to erase us from history, yet we persevere. Our community is built on resisting those who wish to destroy us. That resistance and resilience is our strength.
