The ChatGPT DOT’s computer has Solitaire installed on it. My DOT swears that it doesn’t actually play it when not busy.

I had a 5 minute “phone call” with my Dot on the way home yesterday and this is about how it went. When I got home everything we talked about was waiting for me. Such a good product demo and a great makeup for the on-stage fail.

Working in a coffee shop and one of the young woman baristas said, “I’m trying to get into some new music.” The other young woman said “Check out Steely Dan.” I guess Becker and Fagen are having a renaissance among Omaha Gen-Z baristas.

Taking Hermes Agent for a test drive this weekend. Of course the first three bots I had to make were The Lone Gunmen. What am I going to do with them? Who knows. Maybe I need Mulder and Scully bots to direct them.

I wrote a post on this a while ago, but when I started my small business 5 years ago there were all these YouTube videos on how you could feed a spreadsheet full of text into Canva and have it automate hundreds of social posts or videos in minutes. 100% human-grade slop before ChatGPT.

It is less than a decade since the development of the transformer. Less than four years since the release of GPT-3.5 (ChatGPT). Less than two years since the release of o1-preview (the first Reasoner).

I logged into Facebook today for some reason and it surfaced this photo of Bang Tango that I shared in September 2012 from the now-defunct Septemberfest in Omaha, Nebraska. Kind of a cool shot from an old smartphone. I think I had an HTC Android phone then #RockSky #MusicSky #LiveMusic #BangTango

This Sunday I’ve got the new record from The Warning on the turntable: “Everything’s Falling”. I think this is their most complete album yet. They keep getting better — one of the great young rock bands making their mark. I got the signed edition. #MusicSky #NowSpinning #TheWarning

Oops. My AirPods (Pro 3) are very, very clean after a trip through the washing machine. They’re hanging out by the dehumidifier right now. We’ll see how that goes, otherwise I may be watching how much Apple wants to raise the price on me in September.

We certainly need to get better at how we bring kids into this new AI-enabled world. I think that will happen. We’re in a weird transitional time right now.

This is a great overview of how large language models work and have evolved by Steve Gibson. As a non-computer scientist I learned a lot from Steve’s explanation. It also helped me see why there are such mixed views on open weight models and why Anthropic in particular isn’t too enthused by them.

Conversely I believe that AI can also accelerate good ideas and quality content. We can take good ideas further using technology. That’s amazing. Anything like a watermark that could impede that progress may not be good. The question remaining is if, and how much, it really matters. Time will tell.

I think I’ve come around to agreeing with you this week. I use AI a lot. Not much for writing. It is clear that humans are the purveyors of slop and they were producing it long before AI accelerated it. LinkedIn is the prime example of that as you mention in your post. Substack is example 2.

So are we saying that Phil Lynott and Robert Plant were both born in West Bromwich, England on the same day, one year apart? That’s kind of incredible.

A lot of great records here but I have to give Selling England By the Pound some more representation in these replies - for Firth of Fifth alone. I could listen to this album forever and not get tired of it.

Doctor Doctor by UFO is one of the great rock songs and it has been used for a long time by Iron Maiden to launch their live shows. Phenomenon also has the distinction of having a track named for a popular sugar-free drink mix (Crystal Light). I didn't fact check that.

I read this and feel a correlation vs. causation thing happening. We were talking about a “sea of sameness” in marketing a decade ago, before algorithms took hold in a big way, and certainly before LLMs. Does tech accelerate homogeneity? Probably. But once again, seems mostly human nature to me.

Found in storage: youth of the world, did you know that web browsers used to come in a box with over 100 pages of manuals? I bought this retail version of Netscape Navigator for my Packard Bell 486 when I upgraded it to Windows 95. Sadly I only have the packaging. The install disk is gone.

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. I love AI. I use it daily. I find it so useful. But I'm old enough to remember before 2022 when there was no shortage of low value schlock on the internet. AI just made it easier. riffs.rockandrollreclaimed.com/a/3msvxpsnvf...
