The pros and cons of disappearing from the world
I have enjoyed almost everything Timothy Janovsky has written, and I’ve enjoyed watching him grow as a writer. Janovsky has always honored the deep and serious feelings aspects of his characters while...

What if H. G. Wells’ The Invisible Man were a 21st century queer romance, happily ever after and all? Timothy Janovsky’s The Invisible Roommate gives us a tender read that deals with the desire to disappear, and finding yourself after running away.
A tablet showing the cover of Timothy Janovsky’s The Invisible Roommate is surrounded by plants. A pair of men’s glasses rest on the upper right corner of the tablet.

Partly, it’s that I had dreams and plans, and partly it’s that I was trying so hard to be someone I’m not instead of putting that energy into who I am. Ugh. Sometimes I wish I had several dress rehearsals before going live as an adult, but that’s not how any of this works.

My birthday is coming up next week. Usually, I don’t worry about getting older. Aging is a gift and a curse. But I was going through some old emails and pictures, and got hit with a wave of sadness for all the versions of me that I was trying to become.

Adib Khorram truly understands that tropes are there to serve the characters and story. Isn’t He Romantic is swoony and tender, utilizing the one night stand, fake dating, and third act breakup tropes to give structure to Arya and Ben’s relationship. I adored it. #adibkhorram

Against the backdrop of Zombie America, Maisie and Everett choose to live as well as survive. The romance is A+. The deep grief and rage adds depth. The underpinnings of the mechanics of the apocalypse are not as well considered as I had hoped after reading Pot Shot. Still a darn good horror romance
The cover of Laura Piper Lee’s Doomsdate glows next to a glass bowl filled with lights.

I’m not afraid of lines on my face, but I don’t like the lines forming because of the frequent rictus of ew my face makes in 2026. I don’t want to look like I constantly smell something bad. And my what the fuck lines are becoming deeper than my overthinking lines.

All of Dade’s books have a mix of silly and serious. She gets cheesy about cheese in World’s Okayest Oracle. She also dives into our anxieties about the extractive nature of capitalism and the violence of racism. The romance between Hugh and Gwen is sweet and grounds the big emotional swings.
A tablet showing the cover of Olivia Dade’s World’s Okayest Oracle (Reluctantly) Seeks Demon rests on a long oval wooden serving board that holds a wedge of brie, cheddar cut into triangles, and a slab of Gorgonzola. The board also holds a small dish of sour cherry jam, crostini, cashews, potato chips, and small quartered plums.

I have so many series! Just SO MUCH queer fantasy with platonic relationships at their heart <3 The below is as much information as I could cram in about them, and it doesn't even get to COMMON BONDS or my own short story collection. XD Find most links at claudiearseneault.com/welcome/ 🌈📚
An explainer on where to start with Claudie Arseneault’s books decorated in aromantic and asexual colours. It contains information about 3 series starters.
City of Strife (City of Spires) has a large cast of queer characters; mosaic-style POV, is novel length, has four books that form one big continuous story, and contains city politics and unrelenting kindness + love in the face of cruelty
Baker Thief (Val-de-mer) has a limited # of POV (dual for Baker Thief), is novel length, all books stand alone, and is set in a city inspired by Québec, with romance tropes but made platonic
Awakenings (the Chronicles of Nerezia) has a single main POV, is made of novellas, has an episodic format that works better read in order, and is JRPG inspired, with a found family road trip

The experience of reading Emma Barry’s You, Me & The Conspiracy is 1. Having deep thoughts and feelings about grappling with the reality of America vs the myth, 2. Horny longing, 3. Make a to-do list for breaking and entering, 4. More horny longing, 5. Danger!

The cover for Rachel Griffith’s Just for the Season got me thinking about kisses on romance covers. So here are a few, recent, make out sessions on the covers of books I loved. Resist fascism, put kissing couples on your romance covers!
7 book covers are shown, clockwise: The Invisible Roommate by Timothy Janovsky, The (Fake) Dating Game by Timothy Janovsky, My Best Friend’s Honeymoon by Meryl Wilsner, The Wedding Con by Janine Amesta, Shrunkation by Janine Amesta, Just For the Season by Rachel Griffiths, and Even if The Sky is Falling edited by Taj McCoy. The caption reads, They are Kissing on the Cover!.

My brain will occasionally do a 180 on something. The most surprising has been the recent flip on the top sheet. It used to be the thing that protected the bottom sheet from the dog, but not for sleeping. Now I can’t sleep without it. I continue to be amazed by the mystery that is me.

AGAIN: the #1 predictor of a mass shooter is violence against women. Cops perpetrate VAW at higher % (though exact # unknown ofc) than the gen population. At some point our culture must take seriously the fact that this is a real red flag. It requires hating women less, though.

Just a Highland Fling is a lot of fun. I enjoyed it enormously. It’s a good roadtrip romance with forced proximity, sheep, daddy issues, and a hot Desi bagpiper/poetry professor. What I really loved though was the way Kumar handled big raw feelings and their fallout with delicacy.
