In our March workshop, the R-SPEC Team will explore writing ultra-short stories, which requires a strong focus on a beginning, middle, and end within a tight, concise format. We'll explore and share how writing "short" helps you shape your longer stories. www.r-spec.org
R-SPEC meeting banner artwork:

The meeting title — "Can 'Microfiction' Pay Off Big?" — and the R-SPEC logo are on the left side of the banner.

Alan Vincent Michaels' 200-word story — "A Politician Is Born" — is included in a three-column, blue-tinted box on the right side of the banner:

Mega action star, Harry "The Abominable" Snowman — in solar system-wide, blockbuster movies, such as ‘The Last Mars War,’ ‘Harry's Revenge Against the Yetis of Phobos,’ and ‘Harry Fights the Europa Ice Worms’ — called his long-time agent and his best friend.

"Shel, darling. I'm feeling a bit type-cast. I really want to do something else. Something big, of course, but also new. How 'bout I do a rom-com?"

"That won't 'show you the money' that way, Big Abs. The age-demos on Mars love your Rambo-esque style. Stay with what you know. Maybe there is a gig I can get for you. I'll get back to you."

Shel's compromise? Harry starred in ‘Mr. Harry Goes to Washington,’ which made a planet of money, got him a Best Actor Oscar, and it showed off his "friendlier" side. His fans saw him as someone who could persuade others without destroying anything, except the crooked politicians in Earth's biggest city.

What's next for Harry? He has formed an exploratory team to run for Mars' president. The polls show he might just win.

"You were right, Shel. A rom-com wouldn't have helped my career. Hey, I need a campaign manager. You in?"

"I am, Big Abs!"

Banner image for R-SPEC’s “Annual Business Meeting” on February 3, 2026, which will be followed immediately by our newest deep dive into the question: “Will A.I. replace humans in speculative fiction?”

To the right of the R-SPEC logo is the image of a person after they have stepped into a fantasy world on the other side of a “stargate” portal. The person is becoming translucent, signifying the waning importance of human input in the creation process of speculative fiction.

On March 4, the R-SPEC Team will mind-travel, seeking the birth of speculative fiction. What do you think may be the starting point of speculative fiction, when stories left the day-to-day “what was/is” and became explorations of “what if?” 👉Info @ r-spec.org
