Thank you Bernard Hickey for sharing Electoral Commission voter enrolment data..... Showing the low enrolment levels of young folks.... But also there are more people over 70 enrolled to vote than are eligible!! #NZPol #Aotearoa #NewZealand
Bar chart showing four bars for each of six age groups. The first bar is estimated total number eligible to vote in that group; the second bar is those enrolled on the general roll, the third is those enrolled on the Māori roll, and the final of the four bars is total enrolled in that age group.

For those aged 18 to 24 it looks like only just over half are enrolled to vote.

For those over 70, the total number enrolled to vote is taller than the total eligible voters.

When you buy a plant tunnel and, although you've read the length, you didn't read the height or width and it's way bigger than you thought! It's a two row vege shelter! Bonus!! #Gardening #VegeGardening

Finally retirement is starting to pay off in the vege raising department... Tomatoes, lettuces, courgettes, silver beet, white cabbages, calendula flowers. And what are known as Māori potatoes... Also beans on the way, a little late. I've been brave and planted carrot seeds! #Gardening #Vegetables

Definition of the reo Māori word, hika. It has three meanings:
1. An exclamation meaning heavens, whoa! Or similar.
2. A mate or friend, with no particular gender attached
3. The pudendum.

OK, this is new to me, but only 706 years old news.... Medieval courts tried insects. Thank you to the author of An Insect a Day, Dominic Couzens, and columnist Agnes Stamp.... #Cockchafer #AnimalTrials
Article from Country Life magazine, May 14 2025 by Agnes Stamp which references the book. Includes a close up of the cockchafer beetle showing antennae with fan structures on the end, about the same size as the face. Excerpt from the article: " It flies with a hum and bad steering, may clatter into almost anything, whereupon it often falls to the ground on its back, legs flailing. ....in a court at Avignon, France, in 1320, local may bugs were commanded to retire to a designated area on pain of death, an example of the bizarre medieval practice of animal trials."

Women are in Victorian dress, about 15 of them are sitting around a large table. The person speaking (Ada) is standing. Date is likely after 1896, maybe around 1900.

#BooksOfMastodon #BookScrolling Very much enjoying Nature's Mutiny. Fascinating history, rich, well researched, interesting ideas that the Little Ice Age, a change in climate, changed society permanently. Amusingly he quotes a contemporaneous writer, dissing historians. LoL.
The cover of the book, Nature's Mutiny by Philipp Blom. Subtitle is "How the Little Ice Age Transformed the West and Shaped the Present."Snap of some text from the book. "While poets can hardly be regarded as credible witnesses, the historians tend to be worse." It's from Pierre Bayle I think in 1680.
