The Prime Minister was clear: this [US diesel agreement] agreement is in direct opposition to the efforts of Ukraine, Canada, and our allies to create peace and stability in Europe. It will provide additional revenue for Russia and help finance its illegal, unjustifiable war against Ukraine.
Prime Minister Carney speaks with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy
October 11, 2026
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister offered his condolences for the victims of Russia's latest atrocities and reaffirmed Canada's solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Both leaders underscored the urgent need for Russia to immediately cease its strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
The leaders discussed the new agreement between the United States and Russia to supply millions of tonnes of diesel to the United States. The Prime Minister was clear: this agreement is in direct opposition to the efforts of Ukraine, Canada, and our allies to create peace and stability in Europe. It will provide additional revenue for Russia and help finance its illegal, unjustifiable war against Ukraine.

Canada has imposed over 3,500 sanctions in response to Russia's violations of Ukraine's sovereignty. During their conversation, Prime Minister Carney assured President Zelenskyy that Canada will maintain and, where effective, tighten sanctions to support efforts to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister underscored Canada's unwavering support for Ukraine - for its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. Since Russia's unprovoked and unjustifiable full-scale invasion began, Canada has committed over $8.5 billion in military support and over $750 million for Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction. Most recently, Prime Minister Carney welcomed President Zelenskyy to Canada, where the leaders announced $355 million to support Ukraine's air defences. During today's call, they discussed increasing coordination with allies to build on this support for Ukraine's air defence.
Prime Minister Carney and President Zelenskyy agreed to remain in close contact.

DANISH DEFENCE INTELLIGENCE SERVICE

Assessment of the threat from Russia

The security situation has deteriorated further. Russia has intensified its use of sabotage, destructive cyber attacks and is attacking targets in Europe with drones. The hybrid war is escalating.

A case in point is the foiled drone attack on the Leipzig/Halle Airport which, according to German authorities, had been planned by Russia over a period of several months.
Russia has become more willing to take risks. Russian drones and, in some cases, even missiles have impacted NATO countries bordering Ukraine.

PM Carney has pushed trade diversification to mitigate impact of shift in US trade policy. Data for July indicate this is underway in notable fashion. On WSJ wires:
Trade Diversification Underway in Canada Amid Protectionist U.S. -- Market Talk
Dow Jones Newswires, 03 Sep 2026, 09:35 am EDT

0935 ET - Canadian PM Mark Carney has pushed trade diversification as a means to rebuild an economy dealing with a protectionist Trump administration. Trade data indicate that is underway in a notable way. Merchandise-trade figures for July show the level of non-US exports hit a record high of C$25.6 billion--or a 56% increase from January of last year, when President Trump began his second term. During the same period, the value of U.S.-bound exports dropped 11.5%, to C$50.5 billion. Historically, about three-quarters of Canadian exports are U.S. bound. In July, that share stood at 66.4%. Cynical Publius
@CynicalPublius on X aka retired Army Colonel Thomas Anderson

OK, let's talk some facts about Ukraine:
1. Ukraine is not a liberal democracy. It is a fascist oligarchy with strong neo-Nazi elements and the mere trappings of liberalism and democracy. (This is true even if the weak-minded sheep with Ukrainian flags in their profiles think otherwise.)
2. NATO and the US promised Russia that NATO would not expand into Ukraine, and by posturing that such expansion may take place, NATO provoked Russia.
3. Zelensky is literally an actor with an outsized presence in American politics and is leveraging Democrats and RINOs to his own ends.
4. The national interest of the US is connected to the Ukraine/Russian war tangentially at best.
5. The US is pouring billions of dollars into Ukraine with little if any accountability.
6. Joe Biden is implicated in a pay-to-play bribery scheme with Ukrainian oligarchs, which Biden bragged about publicly.

The record shows Donald Trump has behaved like a gangster running an unusually crude extortion racket dgardner.substack.com/p/on-trade-w...
We need to be absolutely clear about all this for a simple reason: The record shows Donald Trump has behaved, and is behaving, not as the leader of a major trading nation conducting good-faith negotiations; Trump is behaving like a gangster running an unusually crude extortion racket: He says he will punch the shopkeeper hard in the face but says he might be willing to reduce that to a few hard slaps if the shopkeeper makes him an offer he likes. And if the shopkeeper responds to being punched in the face by kicking him in the shins? Well, that won’t be “tolerated.”

In Crimea, they have asked to disconnect all excess electrical appliances from the network. Due to a lack of electricity, pumping stations have stopped working. Water is temporarily not being supplied. Traffic across the ferry crossing in the Kerch area has been halted following an attack on the ferry. Fuel tankers are being asked to return to the R280 highway. I think some serious statements and actions from Moscow are imminent. Continued silence would look completely inappropriate. Sometimes it's the details of just neighbouring Russia that stand out. Good reporting. #Chornobyl
The Chornobyl zone was seized by Russian troops on Feb. 24, 2022, the first day of the invasion, taking some 300 staff of the nuclear power plant hostage and forcing them to continue working. The Russians withdrew five weeks later after failing to seize the capital, 90 kilometres to the south.

When inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency re-entered the plant, they discovered the Russians had damaged US$135-million worth of computers, radiation dosimeters and other equipment before withdrawing.

The Chornobyl disaster evokes strong feelings on both sides of the Ukraine-Belarus border. Because the wind was blowing north at the time of the explosion on April 26, 1986, many of the thousands who later developed cancers connected to the disaster were Belarusian.

The threat of new infectious diseases is rising “exponentially,” he added, noting “they’re causing bigger outbreaks than in the past because we’re more connected.”

Meloni summons the Ambassador
The images of the Israeli minister Ben Gvir are unacceptable. It is inadmissible that these demonstrators, including many Italian citizens, are subjected to this treatment that violates human dignity.

The Italian Government is immediately taking, at the highest institutional levels, all necessary steps to secure the immediate release of the Italian citizens involved.

Italy further demands an apology for the treatment reserved to these demonstrators and for the total contempt shown toward the explicit requests of the Italian Government.

For these reasons, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will immediately summon the Israeli ambassador to request formal clarifications on what has occurred.

Don't miss the original post for treasures like: 'Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi mocked the invasion warnings as manufactured consent. Taibbi wrote on Feb. 20 that predictions of an imminent invasion had been proved “baseless and embarrassingly incorrect."' And who basically got it right:
On February 12, twelve days before the invasion, military analyst Anders Puck Nielsen published an analysis in the Danish journal Ræson warning that war was the most likely outcome. His reasoning was structural: only a full-scale invasion could give Russia anything resembling a victory, since a diplomatic resolution or a limited operation in the Donbas would leave Moscow worse off than before the crisis; facing a more unified NATO, increased Western military support for Ukraine, and growing Finnish and Swedish interest in alliance membership.

Nielsen predicted that Putin consistently misunderstood Ukraine and that there might be a dangerous delusion in the Kremlin that Ukrainians would welcome Russian forces as liberators. The operation, he cautioned, could easily stall. This made Nielsen one of the rare analysts who got both dimensions right: he predicted the invasion and anticipated that it would not go as Moscow planned.

Israel "biggest killer of journalists" in the world: CPJ chief
Israel ‘biggest killer of journalists’ in the world: CPJ chief
Jodie Ginsberg, CEO of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), says the Israeli drone attack that killed Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Wishah today “suggests, unfortunately, another targeted killing by a journalist by Israel”.

“That’s a pattern that we have seen consistently since October the 7th,” said Ginsberg, noting that more than 260 journalist and media workers have been killed in Gaza since the war began.

“That makes Israel the biggest killer of journalists since CPJ started documenting those deaths in 1992. It has killed more journalists than any other government, any other military force, in the world,” she told Al Jazeera.

Ginsberg stressed that journalists being deliberately targeted would constitute a war crime. “Journalists are civilians, and they should never be targeted in a war,” she said.

The killings, she added, are “part of a pattern in which Israel is seeking to control what information we outside of Gaza receive about what’s happening there”.

Time for NATO to step up here
Separately, the Pentagon notified Congress on Monday that it intended to divert about $750 million in funding provided by NATO countries through the PURL program to restock the U.S. military's own inventories, rather than to send additional assistance to Ukraine, according to two U.S. officials.
The first official said it was unclear whether European countries participating in the initiative understood how the funding was being spent.

As members of NATO, we are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest. The pre-coordinated Danish exercise „Arctic Endurance“ conducted with Allies, responds to this necessity. It poses no threat to anyone.

We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Building on the process begun last week, we stand ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that we stand firmly behind.

Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty.

WaPo: Secret meetings between FBI and Ukraine negotiator spark concern | Ukrainian national security adviser Rustem Umerov held closed-door meetings with FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino t.co/wpFchAtoUL
But during his time in the United States, Umerov also held closed-door meetings with FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, according to four people, who like some others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential conversations.
The meetings have caused alarm among Western officials who remain in the dark about their intent and purpose. Some said they believe Umerov and other Ukrainian officials sought out Patel and Bongino in the hopes of obtaining amnesty from any corruption allegations the Ukrainians could face. Others worry the newly established channel could be used to exert pressure on Zelensky's government to accept a peace deal, proposed by the Trump administration, containing steep concessions for Kyiv.

A longer, classified version of the US NSS contains more details on weakening the EU
"Make Europe Great Again"

While the publicly released NSS calls for the end of a "perpetually expanding NATO," the full version goes more into the details of how the Trump administration would like to-quote-"Make Europe Great Again," even as it calls on European NATO members to wean themselves from American military support.
Working from the premise that Europe is facing "civilizational erasure" because of its immigration policies and "censorship of free speech," the NSS proposes to focus U.S. relationships with European countries on a few nations with like-minded-right-wing, presumably-current administrations and movements.
Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Poland are listed as countries the U.S. should "work more with...with the goal of pulling them away from the [European Union]."
"And we should support parties, movements, and intellectual and cultural figures who seek sovereignty and preservation/restoration of traditional European ways of life...while remaining pro-American," the document says.

Russia is locking itself into an escalatory path and is not seeking peace.

I firmly condemn the massive strikes that targeted Ukraine last night, particularly its energy and railway infrastructure.

We must continue to exert pressure on Russia to compel it to choose peace.

I will travel to London on Monday to meet with the Ukrainian President, the British Prime Minister, and the German Chancellor, in order to take stock of the situation and the ongoing negotiations within the framework of the U.S. mediation.

Ukraine can count on our unwavering support. This is the very purpose of the efforts we have undertaken within the Coalition of the Willing. We will continue these efforts with the Americans to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, without which no robust and lasting peace will be possible.

For what is at stake in Ukraine is also the security of Europe as a whole.
