US-import torture pork must be one of those many Brexit-Wins (TM). Could maybe be used as Pork-a-Ceutical Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic Bacon or to make Ractopamine-Relaxant Sausages. #Downfall

No matter how cool you are, you will never be as cool as Oberleutnant Freiherr von Fabeck's dog, 'posing' for the camera after the Battles of Dybbol and Alsen, at the end of the Second Schleswig War of 1864. #photography #war #militaryhistory

In addition to a 'Weisswurst Äquator' (white sausage equator) we Germans also clearly have an Idioten-Äquator (idiot equator). The people behind it are not desiring democratic participation & safeguarding of fundamental democratic rights, but rather the apparent security of an authoritarian state

So if 'we' were looking for a freelance wargame designer or experienced wargamer (with some Kriegsspiel or Planspiel experience) to assist with the development of a simple set of rules (paid job), who would be the person to contact?

Any fashion historians here, who can put this rather interesting 'chain' into context? Is it a one-off? I can't find anything comparable. The portrait dates to about 1826-35 and was painted in West Prussia.

Nearly time to start looking for Xmas pressies In WW1 the Crown Prince of Prussia gave personal gifts to all the men of 'his' 5th Army: 1914: A superb porcelain pipe with his portrait. 1915: A leather tobacco pouch embossed with his gilded cypher 1916: A steel cigarette case with his portrait

Today I am prepping a public talk that I'll be delivering next month at the 'Hooge Crater Museum' near Ypres. The 'touristic' experience of a young German volunteer who found himself on the Flanders front in 1914-15 based on his personal diaries and letters. What are you guys up to?

WW1 mustard gas shell incident near Langemark. Luckily only the fuse detonated (causing quite extensive damage to the hay baler), while the Yperite shell itself remained intact. The iron harvest continues.

Two weeks ago today we allowed British GCSE students to climb into mine galleries in the Argonnes. We had a full day of private, unlimited hands-on access in a war museum and students drove in WW1 tanks. There is nothing like a @zgtours4schools.bsky.social battlefield tour for schools.

This Daguerreotype of Jean Baptiste Pasquanet Baron de Pierre Brune is the oldest photograph in my collection (1845). Pasquanet, born in 1766, was an émigré who fought the armies of Revolutionary France in the War of the First Coalition (1792-1797)

I collect photographs of French Napoleonic War veterans (and the occasional German). This superb tinted Daguerreotype arrived a few weeks back. Photographed in 1853 aged 83 years, this old warrior, a veteran of 14 campaigns, is sitting in his old National Guard uniform. Research ongoing

In the 1930s, a German First World War veteran from Bavaria, posed for two striking portraits in his old Offiziersstellvertreter (deputy officer) uniform. His identity and the reason for the photographs remain a mystery to me, but the quality and expressiveness of the images is just mind-blowing.

Lovely to receive a printed copy of this for the new year. +++ In 2024 you will read and hear a lot more sickening details about the industrial exploitation of human bones (not only from battlefields) from the 18th right into the early 20th century. ++ #history #waterloo

I am used to the neighbours leaving a box of chocolates on the doorstep as a xmas present, or maybe a bottle of wine. Here the neighbours leave what they have shot last Tuesday - I kind of like this better. Love the countryside. Some work ahead tonight!

A commercial 1915 #ww1 postcard showing German (Saxon) soldiers in a trench skinning and gutting rats. 'Menu' board in background announces that the special of 15 March 1915 is rat goulash. I honestly can't tell what these guys are doing. But more rat-themed photos coming up. #history
